Chapter 117 - Chapter 115: Rumors in Winter's Heaven

Chapter 115: Rumors in Winter's Heaven

Rumors spread through Winter's Heaven faster than trains.

Which honestly impressed Jon.

Because Winter's Heaven possessed very fast trains.

Yet somehow...

The citizens were faster.

Jon should have known something was wrong the moment he entered the Hall of Governance the next morning. The guards looked strangely nervous. Several workers immediately avoided eye contact. One poor clerk nearly dropped an entire stack of papers after seeing him. Jon narrowed his eyes suspiciously. Something had happened.

Unfortunately...

He already knew exactly who caused it.

The doors opened.

Ygritte walked inside.

Smug. Entirely too smug. Her red hair was slightly messy while an almost victorious expression rested on her face. The moment several nearby workers noticed her, they suddenly became extremely interested in literally anything else. One man even walked directly into a wall trying not to stare.

Jon slowly closed his eyes.

Gods.

The rumors had already spread.

Ygritte noticed his expression immediately. That dangerous grin appeared again.

"You look worried, Your Grace."

Jon looked toward her calmly.

"You look pleased with yourself."

"Aye."

At least she was honest.

Jon sighed heavily before sitting at his desk. Reports waited for him—trade expansion, military movements, railway construction, factory production. His kingdom never stopped growing, which meant paperwork never stopped multiplying.

Ygritte casually sat directly on the edge of his desk, intentionally blocking half the reports. Jon stared at her. She stared back innocently.

"You are in the way."

"No I'm not."

"You literally are."

"No."

Jon pinched the bridge of his nose. This woman fought White Walkers without fear, yet arguing with her somehow felt harder. Ygritte leaned slightly closer. Close enough for him to catch the faint scent of smoke lingering in her hair.

"You worked enough."

"It's morning."

"Aye."

"I've been here seven minutes."

"You've worked enough."

Jon snorted softly. Then, without warning and while hidden behind the heavy desk, his hand slid down and smacked her as*. The sharp impact made her jolt. Before she could react, he squeezed firmly, fingers digging into the curve with possessive hunger.

Ygritte froze, breath catching.

Jon calmly picked up another report like nothing had happened.

Ygritte stared at him, eyes wide with disbelief and heat.

"You did that intentionally."

Jon didn't even look up.

"Did what?"

Her eyes narrowed dangerously.

"You are learning dangerous habits."

Jon hid a smirk behind the report.

"Good teacher."

Ygritte looked genuinely impressed for a moment. Then she laughed loudly enough to echo through the office. Several workers immediately fled the room. Cowards.

The morning continued with Ygritte perched on his desk, occasionally shifting just enough for Jon to deliver another quick, slow squeeze beneath the edge of the wood. Each touch left her flushed and glaring promises of later retribution.

Unfortunately for Jon... that was only the beginning of his suffering.

Later that afternoon, Val arrived.

Jon sat inside a meeting discussing expansion plans for newly established towns near the railways. Maps covered the large table. Everything appeared normal until Val casually entered. The moment her eyes landed on Jon, she paused, then narrowed her eyes.

She slowly walked toward the table and sat beside him—very close. Closer than necessary.

Ygritte noticed immediately. Disaster approached rapidly.

Val leaned casually against her chair.

"You seem happier today."

Jon answered carefully.

"I was unaware my emotional state was a kingdom concern."

"It became one recently."

Several officers looked extremely uncomfortable. Especially when Ygritte entered seconds later and saw Val sitting beside Jon. The temperature dropped.

Ygritte walked forward too calmly, then sat directly on Jon's desk again.

Val smiled politely. Ygritte smiled back. Neither smile looked safe.

Jon realized he was trapped between two dangerous women.

The meeting continued, though no one remembered the discussion. The room focused on the silent battle between Val and Ygritte. Under the table, hidden by heavy cloths, Jon's hand found Ygritte where she perched. He delivered one firm squeez, kneading the flesh and pulling her closer to the edge. Ygritte's voice hitched mid-interruption. She shot him a heated glare.

Tormund eventually entered halfway through. One look told him everything. His grin became monstrous.

"Oh," he said slowly.

Jon knew trouble had arrived.

Tormund looked between Jon, Val, and Ygritte, then laughed.

"Our king looks terrified."

"I'm not terrified," Jon replied instantly.

Tormund stared.

"Aye."

The sarcasm could have killed someone. Several officers nearly choked. Jon considered mass exile.

Hours later the meeting ended. The officers fled like battle survivors.

Jon remained, gathering reports. Val approached first.

"You handled that surprisingly well."

Jon looked suspicious.

"Handled what?"

Val smiled sweetly.

"Oh, so we're pretending nothing happened?"

Before he could answer, Ygritte appeared.

"As if he notices anything."

Jon sighed.

"I suddenly miss fighting White Walkers."

Both women laughed. Traitors.

That evening the festival continued. Winter's Heaven glowed beneath the snowy sky.

Jon walked through quieter upper districts, seeking peace. Trying.

Ygritte appeared, carrying two warm drinks. One was pushed into his hand.

"You follow me everywhere now?"

"Aye."

"That's concerning."

"You survived White Walkers."

"Barely."

"You'll survive me too."

Jon looked at her quietly.

"Less certain about that."

Ygritte burst into laughter. Gods, he loved that sound.

They walked slowly through glowing streets. Snow drifted gently. City lights reflected on frozen roads. When the path curved into a shadowed alcove, hidden from citizens, Jon set his drink down, pulled her close, and smacked her as* hard. The sharp crack echoed softly. Ygritte yelped, then laughed breathlessly. He squeezed both cheeks firmly, kneading as he pressed her against him.

"You started this war," he murmured.

Ygritte pressed back.

"Aye... and you're winning it."

They lingered, his hands exploring with greedy squeezes until distant footsteps forced them apart, flushed and grinning.

They resumed walking. Their hands brushed. Neither pulled away.

Ygritte's smug grin returned.

"You really do stare often."

Jon looked calm.

"You really do cause problems often."

"Aye."

She sounded proud.

On a quiet stretch, Jon's hand slid lower again. He smacked her once—hard—then squeezed possessively. Ygritte bit back a moan and leaned into him.

"You are getting bold, Snow."

"I'm adapting."

Ygritte laughed softly, warmer this time. Less teasing. More personal.

For several moments they walked in comfortable silence.

Then quietly... Ygritte spoke.

"You really scared everyone after the station attack."

Jon's expression softened.

"The kingdom survived."

"Aye."

"You survived."

Jon looked at her. Ygritte met his gaze with pure honesty.

"I didn't like seeing you like that."

Jon answered quietly.

"I know."

Ygritte stepped closer. Their shoulders pressed together as snow fell softly. The warmth between them felt comforting. Safe. Normal.

After everything... normal felt precious.

They reached another secluded spot beneath a covered bridge. Jon pressed her gently against the wood, out of sight,

"Gods, woman," he muttered, voice rough. "You make me forget every duty."

Ygritte turned, eyes bright.

"Good. You deserve to forget sometimes."

She kissed him fiercely. Jon's hands never left her, squeezing and kneading as they lost themselves in stolen heat. Distant festival laughter finally pulled them apart.

Ygritte looked up at him again.

"So."

Jon became suspicious.

"So?"

"When are you finally admitting you like me?"

Jon nearly laughed.

"You are unbelievably confident."

"I know."

"That wasn't praise."

Ygritte grinned triumphantly.

"It still counts."

Jon shook his head. Then leaned closer, close enough that her smile faltered for half a second.

"You seem very certain of yourself."

Ygritte recovered.

"Shouldn't I be?"

Jon's eyes flickered downward. That alone answered her.

Ygritte looked entirely too pleased.

"Thought so."

Jon sighed dramatically.

"This kingdom is doomed."

"Aye."

She wrapped one arm around his. Neither moved away. Neither wanted to.

And somewhere high above Winter's Heaven...

Ancient divine eyes still watched the King of Winter's Heaven carefully.

But tonight...

Jon Snow wasn't thinking about gods.

Or White Walkers.

Or war.

Tonight...

For the first time in a long time...

He simply allowed himself to be happy.
