Chapter 99 - Chapter 97: The Man Behind the Kingdom

Chapter 97: The Man Behind the Kingdom

Three days had passed since the envoys arrived in Winter's Heaven.

Three days of witnessing things they still struggled to comprehend.

The Titan.

The harbor.

The railways.

The schools.

The hospitals.

The lights that banished darkness.

And yet despite everything they had seen, one question remained unanswered.

Why?

Why build all of this?

The invitation arrived shortly after sunrise.

A simple message delivered by one of the King's officials.

King Jon would receive them that afternoon.

The guest residence immediately became restless.

Some men adjusted their clothing repeatedly.

Others rehearsed questions.

Several argued about proper etiquette.

Ser Marlon Rivers simply sat near the window.

Unlike the others, he was not nervous.

He was curious.

Because after everything he had witnessed, he still could not understand the man responsible for it all.

Winter's Heaven should not exist.

Not beyond the Wall.

Not in fourteen years.

Yet it did.

And somehow one man had started it all.

That afternoon, Erik arrived to escort them.

The envoys followed him through the city.

As they walked, they passed the royal district.

For the first time, they saw the King's Palace clearly.

It stood atop a rise overlooking much of Winter's Heaven.

Massive.

Beautiful.

Powerful.

The crowned direwolf banners snapped in the winter wind.

And at its center stood the Throne Hall.

The envoys could see it even from a distance.

One envoy stared openly.

"So there really is a throne."

Erik laughed.

"Of course."

The envoy scratched his beard.

"For some reason, I thought there wouldn't be."

"The King still rules a kingdom."

That made sense.

Yet Erik did not lead them toward the throne hall.

Instead, he guided them toward another building connected to the palace complex.

A practical structure overlooking the city.

When they entered, the envoys immediately understood the difference.

Maps covered walls.

Models of future districts sat upon tables.

Construction plans filled shelves.

Officials carried reports through corridors.

This was not where ceremonies happened.

This was where the kingdom worked.

"The Hall of Governance," Erik explained.

"The King spends most of his time here."

That surprised them more than they expected.

Eventually they entered a large chamber.

Massive windows overlooked Winter's Heaven.

Snow drifted across the city below.

Trains moved through distant districts.

Factories released columns of white steam into the skies.

And standing beside a large planning table—

Reviewing reports—

Was Jon Snow.

No crown.

No ceremonial robes.

No throne.

Just a man working.

He finished speaking with an official before looking toward the envoys.

Then he smiled.

A genuine smile.

"Welcome."

The tension in the room immediately eased.

"Please sit."

The envoys obeyed.

Jon sat opposite them.

Not above them.

Not elevated.

Opposite them.

Like equals discussing matters together.

The gesture earned immediate respect.

The conversation began simply.

White Harbor.

Trade.

The North.

Winter.

Jon listened carefully.

Asked questions.

Remembered details.

Nothing felt forced.

Gradually the envoys relaxed.

This was not what they expected from a king.

Then finally Ser Marlon asked the question all of them carried.

"Your Grace."

Jon looked toward him.

Marlon hesitated briefly.

Then continued.

"Why?"

A faint smile appeared on Jon's face.

"Why what?"

The knight gestured toward the city beyond the windows.

"The harbor."

"The railways."

"The Titan."

"The schools."

"The hospitals."

"The city."

His voice lowered.

"Why build all of this?"

The room fell silent.

Even nearby officials stopped what they were doing.

Jon slowly rose from his chair.

Then walked toward the windows.

For a long moment, he simply looked out over Winter's Heaven.

Snow drifted gently across rooftops.

People filled the streets.

Life moved everywhere.

Then finally he spoke.

"When I was a child..."

The envoys listened carefully.

"I slowly learned what a bastard was."

The room remained silent.

"I learned why my name was Snow."

"I learned why some people looked at me differently."

"Why some children inherited castles."

"While others inherited a surname."

A faint chuckle escaped him.

"Back then, I laughed."

Several envoys exchanged glances.

Jon turned toward them.

"Not because it didn't matter."

"It did."

"I was a child."

"Of course it mattered."

His gaze drifted back toward the city.

"But then I asked myself a question."

"If the world had already decided what I was..."

"Why should I accept their answer?"

The room grew quieter still.

"I wanted to make something of myself."

"I wanted to prove something."

His voice remained calm.

"When I was six years old, I left Winterfell."

"Not in secret."

"Not in shame."

"I left before everyone."

A small smile touched his face.

"I am not ashamed that I am a bastard."

The certainty in his voice was absolute.

"I never was."

"I do not care."

"I am who I am."

His eyes moved across the envoys.

"I made myself."

"I built myself."

"I learned."

"I fought."

"I failed."

"I stood up again."

"No man handed me a kingdom."

"No man handed me greatness."

"I earned it."

Silence.

Deep silence.

Jon continued.

"When I was young, I wanted to show the world something."

"That a bastard could become more than they imagined."

"That a Snow could accomplish things they believed impossible."

His hand moved toward the city.

"The people of this world look at names."

"Snow."

"Sand."

"Rivers."

"Stone."

"Waters."

"As if children are somehow cursed because of how they were born."

He shook his head.

"Why?"

"Why should a child carry that burden?"

No one answered.

Because no one could.

Jon smiled.

"I could change my name tomorrow."

Several envoys blinked.

"I am a king."

"I could choose any name I wished."

"I could remove Snow forever."

The smile widened slightly.

"But why should I?"

His voice became firm.

"Why should I be ashamed of the name Snow?"

The words echoed through the hall.

"I am Jon Snow."

"And I will remain Jon Snow."

Then he looked back toward Winter's Heaven.

"When I first came beyond the Wall, I saw people freezing."

"I saw children starving."

"I saw families surviving instead of living."

His voice softened.

"And I hated it."

The room remained silent.

"I had knowledge."

"I had opportunities."

"I had the ability to help."

His eyes moved toward the envoys.

"So I did."

Simple.

Honest.

No grand speech.

No boasting.

Only truth.

Jon gestured toward the city.

"This place wasn't built in a day."

"It wasn't built in a year."

"It wasn't built by one man."

"It was built little by little."

"Piece by piece."

"Road by road."

"House by house."

"Brick by brick."

The words settled heavily across the room.

"Every road you see."

"Every school."

"Every workshop."

"Every harbor."

"Every district."

"Someone built it."

"Someone worked for it."

"Someone sacrificed for it."

A smile appeared on his face.

"I simply gave them a reason to believe it was possible."

Marlon spoke again.

"And now, Your Grace?"

Jon looked toward him.

"What is your purpose now?"

For several moments Jon simply stared at the city.

Then he answered.

"For them."

His hand pointed toward the streets below.

"The people."

"The children."

"The generations that come after us."

His voice remained steady.

"I won't live forever."

"Neither will you."

"Neither will any king."

Then came the words none of them would ever forget.

"But what we build can."

The room became completely silent.

"A ruler's greatness is not measured by what he leaves his children."

His eyes moved across the room.

"It is measured by what he leaves the children of his people."

Then he smiled.

"When history remembers this kingdom..."

"When history remembers Winter's Heaven..."

"When history remembers the Titan..."

"The railways..."

"The cities..."

"The people..."

His voice carried quiet confidence.

"They will remember who built it."

"And they will remember that he was a Snow."

Silence.

Then came the final words.

"My name will not be remembered despite being a Snow."

"It will be remembered because I am a Snow."

His eyes seemed to shine with conviction.

"One day the name Jon Snow will be known across the world."

"Not as a curse."

"Not as a mark of shame."

"But as a legend."

"A Snow."

"And that is enough for me."

When the meeting finally ended, the envoys left in complete silence.

They walked through the Hall of Governance without speaking.

Past maps.

Past plans.

Past the future still being built.

Eventually they stepped outside into the falling snow.

Winter's Heaven glowed beneath the evening sky.

For several long moments, nobody said a word.

Then one envoy quietly spoke.

"I thought I was coming here to meet a king."

The others looked toward him.

The man stared across the endless city.

Then finished softly.

"I think we just met the man who built a civilization."

And for once—

Nobody disagreed.
