Chapter 66 - Chapter 65: Ravens and the Northern Lords

Chapter 65: Ravens and the Northern Lords

The raven left Winterfell at dawn.

Its wings cut through the pale northern sky, black against grey clouds, carrying a message sealed with the direwolf of House Stark. By midday, more followed — one after another — until the rookery stood empty and silent.

Lord Eddard Stark watched the last bird vanish into the distance.

He did not sigh. He did not hesitate.

The words he had sent would ripple across the North like a stone cast into still water. Not loudly. Not violently. But undeniably.

A kingdom beyond the Wall.

Trade in numbers unheard of.

Gold enough to make even the South blink.

He knew how it would be received.

Every lord received the same message, written in Ned Stark's steady hand.

To the Lords of the North,

My son, Jon Snow, now ruler of a realm beyond the Wall known as Winter's Heaven, seeks peaceful trade with the North. He offers to purchase livestock — horses, cattle, sheep, pigs — in large quantities, at fair price or above it.

In return, he offers gold, grain, and long-term cooperation.

This is not a summons. It is an invitation.

A meeting shall be held in White Harbor for those who wish to hear more.

— Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North

No embellishment.

No defense.

No explanation.

That alone unsettled some.

Last Hearth — House Umber

Greatjon Umber read the letter once.

Then again.

Then he barked a laugh so loud it startled the dogs.

"A kingdom beyond the Wall?" he roared. "What next — castles made of ice and giants tending sheep?"

His sons exchanged looks, unsure whether to laugh with him or stay silent.

"He says Jon Snow built it," one muttered.

Greatjon snorted. "Built what? Graves?"

Yet the letter stayed in his hand longer than expected.

"Ned Stark doesn't jest," he said finally, voice lowering. "Not about matters like this."

He folded the parchment roughly. "We'll go. If only to see what madness this is."

Karhold — House Karstark

At Karhold, the mood was colder.

Harrion Karstark read the letter by firelight, his expression tightening with each line.

"Beyond the Wall," he said flatly. "Savages. Snow. Death."

His uncle leaned closer. "If Stark's boy truly rules something there—"

"He doesn't," Harrion snapped. "No one rules beyond the Wall. The land breaks men."

Still, the letter burned in his thoughts.

Gold.

Livestock at premium price.

Trade.

He hated that part.

Hated that it tempted him.

"We'll attend," he said at last. "If only to hear the lie spoken aloud."

The Dreadfort — House Bolton

Roose Bolton read the message in silence.

He did not smile.

He did not sneer.

He simply turned the parchment over, studying the wax seal as if it might speak.

"A kingdom," he murmured. "Beyond the Wall."

Ramsay, standing nearby, laughed. "Shall we bring gifts? Perhaps a snowball crown?"

Roose raised a finger.

Ramsay fell silent.

"Ned Stark does not send jokes by raven," Roose said softly. "And Jon Snow was never ordinary."

He folded the letter with care. "Prepare the horses. We will attend."

Not out of belief.

Out of curiosity.

Deepwood Motte — House Glover

Galbart Glover frowned as he read.

He had fought wildlings.

Killed them.

Buried men because of them.

"A kingdom?" he muttered.

His maester adjusted his chain. "If anyone could… it would be Stark blood."

Galbart shook his head. "Beyond the Wall eats ambition."

Still, he tapped the parchment thoughtfully.

"White Harbor," he said. "Neutral ground."

He exhaled. "We'll listen."

Bear Island — House Mormont

Maege Mormont read the letter aloud to her daughters.

They listened quietly.

"A kingdom beyond the Wall," Dacey repeated. "Jon Snow?"

Maege grunted. "That boy always had too much spine for a bastard."

No laughter here.

Only interest.

"If he's built something there," Maege said slowly, "it's worth seeing."

She rolled the parchment. "Prepare the ship."

Barrowlands — House Dustin

Barbrey Dustin read the letter with narrowed eyes.

"Stark's son," she scoffed. "Always Stark's son, even when he isn't."

Her fingers tightened on the parchment.

A kingdom.

Gold.

Trade.

Beyond the Wall.

"Lies," she whispered. "Pretty lies."

Yet even she knew better than to ignore a Stark invitation.

She rang for her steward.

"Ready the horses."

White Harbor — House Manderly

Wyman Manderly laughed.

A deep, pleased sound.

"A kingdom that wants to buy?" he said, wiping his mouth. "Oh, I like him already."

He read the letter twice more.

"Whether it's true or not," he murmured, "this will be profitable."

And if it was true…

Wyman's smile widened.

Winterfell — Ned Stark Alone

By nightfall, Ned Stark sat alone in his solar.

The ravens were gone.

The North would respond — with disbelief, with mockery, with suspicion.

He expected nothing else.

He stared into the fire.

"They won't believe you," he said softly, as if Jon could hear him across leagues of snow and stone. "Not yet."

But belief was not required.

Attendance was.

And once the lords of the North saw the gold, the goods, the certainty in Jon's eyes—

Ned closed his eyes.

The North would change.

Across the North

In halls great and small, the same thought repeated itself.

A kingdom beyond the Wall?

A Stark boy playing king?

A joke.

A lie.

A madness.

Yet one by one, horses were saddled.

Ships prepared.

Cloaks packed.

Because the letter bore Ned Stark's name.

And because, in the North, even the most unbelievable things deserved to be faced head-on.

Far Beyond the Wall

In Winter's Heaven, Jon Snow stood on a high balcony, unaware of every sneer, every laugh, every doubt.

Or perhaps… he was aware.

Alex approached quietly. "The ravens have flown."

Jon nodded. "Good."

"They won't believe," Alex said.

Jon's gaze remained steady. "They don't need to."

Below them, a city of stone, road, forest, and living order stretched farther than any northern lord could imagine.

"Soon," Jon said calmly, "they'll count."
