Chapter 1 - Prologue

#### The Drudgery of a Salaryman

Kota Sutaki stood on the crowded train platform, his eyes glazed over as he waited for the next train to Tokyo. It was a daily ritual he had come to despise, a monotonous routine that seemed to stretch on endlessly. As he squeezed into the packed train, he thought about the countless times he had made this journey, each day blending into the next.

Kota was 34 years old, a salaryman working for one of the largest video game corporations in Japan. On paper, it was a prestigious job. In reality, it was a soul-crushing grind. He spent long hours in a cramped cubicle, staring at a computer screen, dealing with demanding bosses and unreasonable deadlines. The constant pressure to perform and the lack of appreciation had worn him down over the years.

Despite his dissatisfaction, Kota endured it all for his family. His six-year-old daughter, Yuki, was the light of his life. Her bright smile and infectious laughter were the only things that made his daily struggles bearable. His wife, Sugu, was his rock, always there to support him through the toughest times. They lived in a modest apartment in Saitama Prefecture, a short commute from Tokyo. It wasn't much, but it was home.

#### The Warmth of Home

As Kota stepped off the train and walked through the familiar streets of his neighborhood, a sense of calm washed over him. The scent of home-cooked meals wafted through the air, mingling with the sounds of children playing and neighbors chatting. It was a stark contrast to the sterile, oppressive environment of his workplace.

When he opened the door to his apartment, he was greeted by the sight of Yuki running towards him, her arms outstretched. "Daddy!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up with joy.

Kota scooped her up in his arms, hugging her tightly. "How's my little princess?" he asked, his voice softening.

"I'm good, Daddy! Look, I drew a picture for you," she said, proudly showing him a crayon drawing of their family.

"It's beautiful, Yuki. Thank you," Kota replied, his heart swelling with pride and love.

Sugu appeared from the kitchen, a warm smile on her face. "Welcome home, Kota. Dinner's almost ready."

Kota set Yuki down and walked over to his wife, giving her a gentle kiss. "Thanks, Sugu. It's good to be home."

#### The Sanctuary of Friendship

Every Saturday night, Kota found solace in the company of his two best friends, Toma Raki and Jin Loka. They had known each other since childhood, their bond forged through years of shared experiences and countless adventures. Despite their busy lives, they made it a point to gather at Kota's place every weekend, a tradition that had become a lifeline for all of them.

That evening, the three friends sat in Kota's living room, drinks in hand, reminiscing about the old days. The sound of their laughter filled the room, a stark contrast to the usual silence that permeated Kota's life.

"Have you heard the news, Kota?" Toma asked, his voice tinged with concern. "There's been a lot of police activity lately."

"Yeah, I heard the same thing," Jin added, his expression serious. "People walking weirdly, getting shot and still walking. They even attacked some people. It's really crazy."

Kota took a sip of his drink, his brow furrowed in thought. "I don't really know, guys. All I know is that it seems weird. I've heard about protests, even people at my work have been getting really worried."

"Well, enough about the sad mood in here," Toma said, trying to lighten the atmosphere. "Kota, you should think about quitting that job. You always get treated like shit."

Kota sighed, nodding slightly. "Yeah, well, I need the good pay for my daughter Yuki. It's not easy, but it's what I have to do."

The conversation drifted to lighter topics, the worries of the world temporarily forgotten as they enjoyed each other's company. But beneath the surface, the tension remained, a lingering sense of unease that none of them could shake.

#### A World on the Brink

The next morning, Kota woke up with a dull headache, a reminder of the previous night's drinking. As he prepared for another day of work, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The news on TV was filled with reports of increasing violence and unrest, strange incidents that seemed to defy explanation.

At work, the atmosphere was tense. Colleagues whispered in hushed tones, their eyes darting nervously around the office. Even Kota's usually stoic boss seemed on edge, his usual demands tempered by an uncharacteristic uncertainty.

By lunchtime, rumors were flying. Some said it was a terrorist attack, others believed it was a new, deadly virus. Kota listened with growing concern, the pieces of a disturbing puzzle starting to come together in his mind.

That evening, as he walked home, he noticed an increased police presence on the streets. Sirens blared in the distance, and the air was filled with an unsettling sense of urgency. As he turned the corner to his apartment building, he saw a group of people gathered around something on the ground.

Curiosity getting the better of him, Kota approached the crowd, trying to see what had drawn their attention. What he saw sent a chill down his spine. A man lay on the ground, his movements jerky and unnatural. His skin was pale, almost gray, and his eyes were vacant, devoid of any humanity.

One of the bystanders, a middle-aged woman, was frantically trying to communicate with the man. "Are you okay? Do you need help?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.

The man responded with a guttural growl, lunging at the woman with surprising speed. The crowd screamed and scattered, panic spreading like wildfire. Kota stood frozen, unable to tear his eyes away from the horrifying scene unfolding before him.

The police arrived moments later, quickly subduing the man and securing the area. As they worked, one of the officers caught Kota's eye, his expression grim. "Get home, sir. It's not safe out here," he warned.

Kota nodded numbly, his mind racing as he hurried back to his apartment. When he walked through the door, he was greeted by the worried faces of Sugu and Yuki.

"What's going on, Kota?" Sugu asked, her voice trembling.

"I don't know," he admitted, pulling them both into a tight embrace. "But whatever it is, we're going to get through it together."

#### The Dawn of Chaos

The following days were a blur of escalating chaos. The news was filled with reports of violent outbreaks, cities going into lockdown, and emergency services struggling to contain the situation. The government urged people to stay indoors, but fear and confusion drove many to flee their homes in search of safety.

At work, the tension reached a boiling point. Projects were abandoned, and meetings turned into frantic discussions about evacuation plans. Kota's boss, usually a figure of authority and control, seemed just as lost as everyone else.

One evening, as Kota sat with Sugu and Yuki, trying to reassure them, his phone buzzed with a message from Toma. "We need to talk. Meet at our usual spot."

Reluctantly, Kota kissed Sugu and Yuki goodbye and headed out to meet his friends. The streets were eerily quiet, the usual hustle and bustle of Tokyo replaced by an oppressive silence.

When he arrived at their meeting place, Toma and Jin were already there, their expressions grim. "We need to make a plan," Toma said without preamble. "This isn't going away. We have to think about our families, our safety."

Jin nodded in agreement. "I've been gathering supplies, just in case. We can't wait for the government to sort this out. We need to take matters into our own hands."

Kota listened, the weight of their words sinking in. He thought about Yuki and Sugu, the life they had built together, and the uncertain future that lay ahead. "You're right," he said finally. "We need to be ready for whatever comes next."

#### A Glimmer of Hope

As the days turned into weeks, the situation continued to deteriorate. The once vibrant city of Tokyo was now a shadow of its former self, its streets filled with fear and desperation. But amid the chaos, there were moments of hope, acts of kindness and bravery that reminded Kota of the resilience of the human spirit.

He spent his days preparing, gathering supplies, and fortifying their apartment. Sugu proved to be a pillar of strength, her calm determination inspiring Kota to keep going. Yuki, blissfully unaware of the true extent of the danger, remained a beacon of innocence and joy.

One evening, as they sat together, Kota shared a story from his childhood, a tale of adventure and friendship that brought smiles to their faces. For a brief moment, the darkness outside seemed to recede, replaced by the warmth of their love and the promise of a better tomorrow.

#### The Undead Sun Rises

But as the days passed, it became clear that the world as they knew it was changing irreversibly. The incidents of violence and unrest were no longer isolated; they were part of a larger, more sinister pattern. The undead, once a nightmarish concept confined to fiction, were now a terrifying reality.

One fateful night, as Kota lay in bed, his mind racing with thoughts of survival, he heard a commotion outside. He rushed to the window, his heart pounding. What he saw confirmed his worst fears. A horde of the undead was moving through the streets, their numbers growing with each passing moment.

He turned to Sugu, his voice urgent. "We need to leave, now."

Sugu nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "I'll get Yuki. You gather the supplies."

As they worked quickly to pack their belongings, Kota's mind raced with thoughts of their uncertain future. But one thing was clear: he would do whatever it took to protect his family and ensure their survival.

With Yuki in his arms and Sugu by his side, Kota stepped out into the night, the world around them engulfed in chaos. The journey ahead would be fraught with danger and uncertainty, but as long as they had each other, there was hope.

And so, under the eerie light of the undead sun, their fight for survival began.
