~Amelia~
“Amelia,” Caleb’s voice crackled through my mind link, and the second I heard it, I already knew the day had gone sideways. “We’ve got movement at the west edge, and it’s not ours.”
I was halfway through checking Lily’s nursery shield notes when that the news got to me, and I looked up so fast I nearly knocked the folder off the table. “How many?” I asked, and I was already walking before he answered.
“Three in the brush, maybe four if they’re smart enough to keep one hidden,” Caleb said. “They came in quiet, and they’re testing the patrol rotation like they want to see if we changed it.”
I grabbed my jacket, shoved my notes at the nearest guard, and snapped, “Then they picked the wrong damn day to try,” because my patience was nonexistent and the whole pack had been on edge since the body warning at the border and the nursery alarms we’d only just finished tightening.
