Mary had kept to herself the rest of the day. She hadn't seen McKenna and he hadn't joined her for dinner, and she hadn't bothered to ask after him. He was right. She was unwell and needed to focus on getting better.
"He is a man of honor, indeed," she muttered, sitting by the window, frowning at the parted curtains as she stared up at the night sky.
A knock came.
Moments later, Eloise's head peeked through the door.
"El," Mary breathed, her face lighting up as she rushed over.
"Oh, Mary." Eloise opened her arms, and Mary folded into the embrace. "I can't be away from you for too long," she said with a soft giggle.
Mary smiled then paused, noticing how Eloise was dressed. She looked more like a proper lady than usual, which was rare for her. Mary glanced up at her friend's flushed cheeks.
