The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time I returned to the village, casting long shadows across the ground. Eclipsion was securely sheathed and it's resonance had calmed down.
As I approached the village, I noted the familiar sights. The tranquillity of the village contrasted sharply with the intense revelations I had just faced.
I made my way to Eldrin's home. The sight of the old man's weathered face was a comfort, a reminder of the normalcy that had once been my world. He was out front, lighting lanterns for the evening. As I approached, he looked up, his eyes widening in surprise and relief.
"Aldrich!" Eldrin called, his voice tinged with both joy and concern. "You're back! I didn't know what to think when you disappeared like that."
"I'm back," I said, stepping up to him. "And, as you can see, I'm not injured."
Eldrin scrutinized me closely, his gaze lingering on my face. "You look different," he said, a note of curiosity in his voice. "What happened out there?"
I considered how much to reveal. "I've... learned a lot," I said carefully. "Some things I need to discuss with you."
He nodded, gesturing for me to follow him inside. We entered his cozy home, filled with the comforting smell of herbs and the crackling warmth of a hearth fire. Eldrin motioned for me to take a seat at the table.
"First things first," he began, setting down a kettle to brew some tea. "What did you discover?"
I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts. "Do you know of Eldric Valefort?"
Eldrin's hand paused mid-air as he reached for a teacup. He looked at me, his eyes narrowing in surprise. "Eldric Valefort? That name is familiar, but..."
I leaned forward. "I need to know more about him. And where the Valefort family and the ancient guardians are now."
Eldrin's expression shifted from surprise to deep contemplation. "Eldric Valefort," he said slowly, "was a legendary figure. He was one of the greatest guardians of this world. His legacy was spoken of in hushed tones among our ancestors."
"What do you know about him?" I pressed.
Eldrin took a sip of his tea, seemingly lost in thought. "Valefort was said to be a transcendent being, a protector who wielded immense power. His blade—was it called Eclipsion?"
"Yes," I confirmed.
Eldrin's eyes widened. "Then you must have found the sword. That sword was said to be of unimaginable power, linked to the fate of our world. Eldric Valefort was a figure of great importance, but his origins were always a mystery. He appeared in our history, having fought against dark forces that threatened the balance of the world."
"What about the rest of the Valefort family and the ancient guardians?" I asked.
Eldrin's face grew somber. "Many of the ancient guardian families were lost in a great conflict. The details are scarce, but there was a war that decimated much of our lineage. The records were lost, and only fragments of our history remain. The Valeforts, like many others, became a shadow of their former selves."
I could sense that Eldrin was holding back, possibly not knowing the full extent of what had transpired. "So, what about the Valeforts now? Where are they?"
Eldrin shook his head. "Our family's history has been fractured. Many of the surviving members have scattered, seeking to protect what remains of our heritage. They live in secrecy, hidden from those who might wish to harm them."
"And what of the ancient guardians?" I asked. "Are they all gone?"
"Most are gone," Eldrin said with a pained expression. "The great war took a heavy toll on them. Some fought valiantly until their last breath, while others were betrayed or fell into obscurity. Our world is not what it once was."
The conversation was heavy, filled with the weight of lost history and broken legacies. I took a moment to absorb the gravity of Eldrin's words. "But Eldric Valefort... he seemed to have known more than what is recorded. He mentioned the Valeforts would be your allies but also a threat."
Eldrin's expression grew troubled. "The Valeforts, as I said, have become scattered. They are both our protectors and our possible adversaries, depending on their interpretation of the balance. If they see you as a threat to that balance, they might oppose you. They're bound by ancient oaths and contracts."
I frowned, thinking about the implications. "Is there any more information on this great war? Anything at all that might help me understand what I'm dealing with?"
Eldrin sighed deeply. "The great war is one of the most guarded secrets. It's not something often spoken of, even among the elders. What we know is that it was a catastrophic event that reshaped our world and nearly wiped out the guardians. Many of the specifics were lost or buried, and the survivors were too few to piece everything together."
"Then," I said slowly, "how can I find out more about what happened? Is there anyone else who might know?"
Eldrin shook his head. "I don't know of anyone who has the full picture. The records we have are fragmented at best. Perhaps the Valeforts themselves might have more information, but they're elusive."
A heavy silence fell between us. I could feel the weight of the unanswered questions pressing down on me.
"There's something else," Eldrin said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Arthur has been looking for you."
"Arthur?" I echoed. "Why?"
Eldrin looked troubled. "He didn't say much. Only that it was urgent and that he needed to speak with you. His demeanor was... intense, like he was on the brink of something important."
I nodded, a sense of unease settling over me. Arthur's involvement always carried a layer of complexity. "I'll find him. Thank you, Eldrin, for everything."
Eldrin gave me a reassuring smile. "Be careful, Aldrich. The world is a more dangerous place than it once was. And if you need any more information, you know where to find me."
I nodded and left Eldrin's home, my thoughts racing. The pieces of the puzzle were coming together, but the picture was still incomplete. With Eclipsion at my side, I felt a sense of purpose, but also a growing anticipation of the challenges ahead.
As I neared Arthur's residence, I could see him pacing restlessly outside. His eyes met mine as I approached, and he straightened, a look of relief washing over his face.
"There you are," Arthur said, his voice filled with a mixture of urgency and concern. "I've been trying to find you. There's something we need to discuss."
I nodded, feeling a sense of foreboding. "Lead the way."
With that, Arthur and I headed into his home.
[System Alert: New objective: Uncover the reason for Arthur's search.]
"Let's see what Arthur has to say," I muttered to myself, steeling my resolve for the trials to come.
