"Do you wish to take command?"
Madelyn blinked, bewildered. "Of the ship?"
He nodded.
She looked down at the wheel, then out across the silent dockyard. The hung lantern's light shimmered across the water, carving trembling ribbons on the farm surface.
All remained the same.
"But it is not moving," she said slowly, noting.
"It is not," he agreed, bringing his gaze again to hers.
"Then how shall I command it?"
Mr Brand pushed himself from the railing and walked toward her. He stopped close enough that she could feel the warmth of him. Close enough that she had to tilt her head back to keep his gaze.
"Things do not need to be in motion before they may be commanded. You only need to know that you have the power to command them."
