Chapter 88 - He Would Have Them Wed

The air shifted.

Alexander's expression darkened, the light in his eyes turning cold.

"Careful, Brand." His voice became unusually low. "Whatever my thoughts, you seem maddened by this woman. But if her bewitching will have you speak of Guinevere as you please, then hear me now, I have no tolerance for such foolish frippery."

Brand's single gaze went to the queen, but she remained smiling. He was uncomfortable now. How did he continuously utter words to offend her?

"Your Majesty, Forgive me, I—"

"Speaking derogatorily and afterwards asking for forgiveness is the way of a coward." Alexander interjected, "I have given my final warning."

A long silence ensued.

Underneath his repentance, shame brewed, and in his chest, anger burned. He had never meant to insult the queen—never would he wish to do so, but Alexander was pushing him in words towards edges he had never visited and he would admit, it was surprising how he was allowing it.
