Morning came quickly and he rescinded the helm to his quartermaster, retreating to his cabin and his maps. His fingers followed the sea routes even though his attention had since been claimed by a different thought.
He adjusted the compass again, eyeing the direct path to Spain. It had been three days since France. If they remained on course, they would arrive at the port at Cádiz in circa seven days which would provide enough time for his trade and to see himself to China before returning to Mainecroft castle.
He could not afford another Christmas away. Alexander might just about hate him.
Stephen was late, and truly Brand would have been impatient, except he was distracted. He moved the compass at the edge of his map, his mind conjuring again the conversation he and Madelyn had shared.
