Solo mission? If he wants me to be undercover, I'm not the one fit for this. It should be Feyre.
"Sorry, Chief. But why me? I'm not the right person for this job. And why will it be a solo mission? Is the mission too confidential?" I asked him, confused. I don't know why he chose me for this mission, but this is my first time hearing about a solo mission. We always worked on teams.
"You know about my acquaintance who owns the most famous international clothing brand in the world—the former CEO and owner of AX, Mr Alessandro, right? He stepped down and gave his son the position just recently. He just knew that his son received death threats. They have a lot of enemies who want them to go down. For so many years, they've always been at the top of the ladder in the business. They have always been a target for those who are envious of their success," Chief started while looking through my eye, trying to find any hint of hesitation in my eyes.
Now I know, he wants to test me. I've never been into any solo missions before. It's okay with me, but I feel bad about this.
He then continued to speak when he saw me not flinching from his stare and having a firm resolve. "According to him, his son received not only death threats but also black flowers. The paper of the letter is a very special type of paper that is unknown these days. We are still currently investigating this. Mr Alessandro asked for my help and filed a request for protection from our department. He was being cautious about this matter and kept it a secret. And since you are the only one I trusted, I recommended you to him." Just before the Chief continued to speak, I interfered with him.
"Chief, I'd suggest that Feyre take this mission instead since she's our best undercover agent. She also excels in covert surveillance, too." I said. Chief looked at me like he didn't believe I just said that.
"Don't fool me, Avery. You're my niece. I know you. I know your achievements when you were still a trainee. You aced all those fields that your members' roles are now." Our Chief, also my Uncle, said with a teasing grin.
I let out a huge sigh. The Chief probably made up his mind. I can't back down now.
"So how long will I babysit that heir, Chief?" I crossed my arms. I don't like babysitting a grown a*s man. I'd rather help poor people who can't defend their selves from oppressive and influential people.
"You will be with the victim 24 hours, Lieutenant. You will live in his son's own place. You will be acting as a personal assistant in the morning, investigating in the evening, and protecting the victim from any harm that may come." Chief said, and I nodded at him. I don't even have any choice now, do I?
"Roger that. Can I have more information about the victim that I should know, Chief? Like his attitude or personality?" I asked him again. I need to know so I can adjust how to treat that guy.
"I really don't know about the kid's personality because I haven't seen him. But we have information about him and his acquaintances in a folder. I will send that folder to your house later, Avy. What I only know is his father, Mr Alessandro. For him, women should stay at home and not work. He thinks women are inferior to men. But he's kind and loves his family so much." Chief answered and looked at me worriedly.
I gulped when I heard him say that. Sh*t! This feels familiar. I don't want to meet another male chauvinist pig again.
"He was reluctant when I recommended you to him since you are a girl. But no worries; he said he would give you a chance. It seems like he's not that discriminating." The Chief added to reassure me when he saw my resolve wavering.
I know that Mr Alessandro just accepted it because he didn't want my Uncle to be upset with him if he still said something to doubt my skills. What a nice friendship you have, Uncle! But I don't like it!
My blood pressure will keep rising with these people, and it will be the death of me. I bet his son is like that, too. He grew to observe his father with those principles, so I bet he will get that too.
"I know he undermines a lot with women's capabilities, Avy, but Mr Alessandro is a businessman. When he sees a talent, he will not let them go if they're a man. When it comes to women, though, he at least gives them a chance to prove themselves if they can handle the job. And you take on challenges like just childplay, Avy. You got this!"
I let out a huge sigh. Why do you think of me so highly, Uncle?! I wanted to scream at him that I can't do this, but I kept it in my mind. I can't let that proud and excitement-filled smile out of my Uncle's face, can I?
"Am I going to be promoted after successfully carrying out this mission?" I asked halfheartedly.
I was just trying to tease him, though. I know it's still too early to be promoted. But my jaw dropped when I heard what he said next.
"Yes. You're going to be promoted to the rank of Captain." I lit up after he said that. I never expected that he was really planning to promote me.
"We planned to promote you after your last mission with your members. But the decision changed because of the next mission. If you are successful with this, you will be promoted together with your members." He added.
So you mean, the girls' promotion lies with me. What a cunning guy you are, Uncle! But oh well, since we will be promoted after this, I will do my best in this mission. I have a goal to look forward to now.
"You should keep your word, Uncle," I said as I happily skipped towards the door outside his office. I can hear his laugh at my back.
I stopped when I realised that I still don't know when I would start with this mission. I looked back and asked. "When should I start, Chief?"
"I will send you there at Mr Alessandro's son's place tomorrow."
