During the break, McTavish walked to the church's side corridor and lit a cigarette. Dewer followed him.

"Angus, we need to be pragmatic," Dewer whispered. "London will never agree to 100% of oil and gas revenues. 70% is already a historic breakthrough. We can push for more fiscal autonomy, but complete separation is unrealistic and would harm Scotland's economy."

McTavish exhaled smoke: "Donald, do you know how many children in a Highland village die prematurely due to lack of medical resources? Do you know how many elderly people freeze to death in winter because of meager pensions? London takes our resources and then gives us a bit back as if they're charity, telling us to 'be grateful.' I don't want to live like this even for one more day."
