Ferguson pointed to Real Madrid's number 10 and said, "That's to damn well mark him tightly. If he goes to the front, you follow him to the front; if he moves back, follow him back, and even if he goes to goalkeep, you damn well stand in the box and defend him. You must have more patience than you have with your girlfriend and kids, got it?"

Fletcher nodded earnestly.
