Kosciuszko was about to retort, but remembered Saint-Cyr's superb command in launching a counterattack against the Bagration Army. He humbly asked, "Can you tell me your reasoning?"
"Logistics," Saint-Cyr said. "The Russians themselves have emptied all the villages and towns within several hundred kilometers west of Dorogobuzh, and we have 'cleared' large areas from the Seversky Duchy to Lubny for them.
"This means that currently only a few cities like Kursk and Bryansk can provide supplies nearby for Kutuzov, which is far from sufficient for his army of over a hundred thousand.
