Chapter 6 - chapter 6: The funeral

"So today's the day huh." I said my heart feeling like it was sinking deeper into a bottomless ocean.

'Although I am happy I met Jin and his family, maybe if it was under different circumstances.' I thought to myself mauling about things I had no control over.

Soon I got stuck in my transe not even realizing that time was ticking by. Until someone cracked the door to my room open and lightly popped their blonde head into the room.

"Yo morning man. You feeling okay about today?" Jin asked with his usual I don't give a damn at least I'm happy tone.

I looked at him with a deadpan look and said "What am I supposed to be psyched about going to my grandmother's funeral."

"Well no but I never said it like that, I mean well, uh how to do I say this..." Jin fumbled trying to find a response to my jab.

"Okay, okay enough man you can relax it's just a joke."I said just realizing that he had somehow made it to the middle of the room without me realizing.

" But anyway how do you think things are gonna go today?" He asked looking a bit nervous now.

"Well I've got no idea, like I'm not entirely sure if I actually have any family that's alive and if I did I really don't think they would like me considering I've never met them at least once since I could remember being me." I said while sitting up on the bed now my foot touching the cold wooden ground under me.

"Ohh I see... Mom finished making breakfast and we gotta get ready to go so go brush your teeth and come downstairs after." Jin replied as he turned and walked looking over his shoulder to give me a smile before he left.

After he left I got up, went to the bathroom brushed my teeth washed my face and headed downstairs. We had a quick meal relaxed for a bit then me, Jin and Earl did our morning workout. Which consisted of some push ups, pull ups, taking a jog around the block 5 times and practicing our individual abilities. Over the past two weeks I had become more familiar with my destruction and creation abilities and even developed a new skill that allowed me to send my energy into something through touch and then destroy it from the inside.

After finishing our training we began getting ready to go to the funeral. I wore a full black shirt with a red tie and a long black pants. Jin wore something similar but his tie was black. Earl basically wore the same thing as Jin and Elana wore a black dress.

Eventually we all found ourselves in the car. Jin and I were in the backseat.

"So Ryouto you sure you're ready for this? I know it's gonna be hard but don't worry all your gonna have to do is say your parting words to her. Nothing else." Earl said turning back to look at me trying to calm me down although this wasn't exactly what I needed to hear it was at least enough to reassure me I wasn't going to have to say some speech and get emotional about something I already cried and had nightmares about almost every night.

"Nah uncle don't worry about it, I'll be fine." I said to them lifting my gaze off from my trembling hands. But deep inside brewed the question...

'Will I really be alright?'

With that lingering thought we began making our way to the cemetery. Where the graveside service would be held.

We arrived at the cemetery in the blink of an eye, at least that's how it felt to me as I was too stuck in my own world to actually pay attention to the drive.

When we made it to the spot the funeral was taking place it had around twenty or so people there around ten or so of them having white hair and looking at me with disgust or hate I couldn't tell but I knew they didn't like me that was for sure. The other people looked pretty average but three people sitting in the back with black hair and purple eyes caught my eye. They seemed to have my black hair and our facial structure was slightly similar but they also carried a carefree and elegant arua especially the two women, while the man was more composed. However unlike the people with white hair these black haired people looked at me with warmt.

At that moment with all the stares on me I couldn't help but to lower my head and then my body just took over as it moved on it's own making it's way to the back and took a seat right next to a old lady with the purple eyes and black hair cascading down to her back with strands of gray hair standing out.

I briefly looked at her as she stared back for a few seconds before she spoke.

"Ryouto. You've grown quite a bit since I last saw you. " The old lady said looking directly into my red eyes with her deep purple eyes that deeply reminded me of my destruction ability.

"Who are you?" I asked not breaking eye contact.

"Oh you don't remember me? And here was your poor old grandmother hoping you'd at least remember me." She said holding her cheek making dramatic disappointed expression.

"Your my grandmother??" I asked in shock. Only to see a smile bloom on the woman's face a moment later.

"Yes, what you thought I looked too young to be a grandmother?" "No just the opposite actually" I interrupted her with no hesitation.

"Hmph, cheeky brats these days. Just like your father but it's good to see you're doing well Ryo." The words caused my eyes to widen.

'I haven't heard that name since she....' I thought looking up at the casket next to a man speaking infront facing everyone.

"We'll speak later." My newly met grandmother said as she pat my shoulder probably realizing the reason for my silence.

"As we all assemble here today in memory of the woman known as Ikumi Asahi..." The man spoke on. Minutes passed by and finally the man speech ended and it was time for me to say my last words to her.

The white haired people in the first row all went one by one. Then the second row and finally the third row where me, Jin, his parents, the woman that called herself my grandmother and the two other black haired people sat.

"Kid let's go together." My so called grandmother said as i watched the last person in the second row walking back towards his chair as he finished saying his final words.

"O...okay" I replied, my voice quivering slightly and eyes heavy.

I got up and as I passed by Jin and his parents they gave me a gentle smile signaling they would be there for me. I made my way out into the walkway and behind me the old woman and the other two black haired people.

"Hey Yura do you really think ms. Yamiko is actually going to..." I heard the man behind the old lady say to the lady besides him.

'I guess Yamiko is the woman that says she's my grandmother then. Wonder what their talking about...'

"No doubt about it Yuro you know once she sets her mind on doing something it's impossible to change her decision." They continued whispering to each other but I didn't have time to keep listening to their conversation and focused back on saying my last words.

We soon reached the casket. My grandmother body lying in it, covered by flowers, her face was mostly covered as well only showing her mouth with a smile on her pale face.

Tears began welling in my eyes as I remembered that day once more.

'even though I wanted to see her face one last time and be a strong person for her, it's really hard not crying right now.' This thought ran through my mind as someone handed me a flower and I placed it gently next to her smile.

"I will never forget the days that we spent together grandma, I hope you're doing well wherever heaven took you and though we're apart for now you're words will forever stay with me. Until we reunite at the end of the river once again."
