Chapter 110 - Backdooring this bitch

Clearly Steele hadn't gotten the clue about how dangerous we were because these soldiers were no better than the ones we killed in Old Haven except they didn't turtle up and were as a result much easier to deep six. The most annoying ones to kill were the ones with those thick ass riot shields that they used to provide mobile cover for their allies. Well with the echo down and the spying no longer possible I was free to go all out and finally got to put my own version of Phaselock into action.-

A simple flick of the wrist and a balling of a fist and those shielded bitches got to experience the full power of a gravity singularity flaring up around them. Needless to say they were dead before they could even scream. The best part however was that since the gravity was centered around them it also yoinked their buddies into the glowing red orbs of death. Let me fucking tell you THAT color threw me off at first as I was expecting the orbs to be the same color they were previously.-

I had a theory that this change in color was caused by the grading up of my [Energy projection] trait a bit back as it had been what allowed me to fully send out my energy from my body without using physical contact. I remembered that when I tested this out at the time the energy had this same red coloration so it wasn't much of a stretch to imagine it was the cause of my Phaselock bubbles new color. Whatever the case it still worked the same as always and admittedly I may have gone a bit overboard now that I could fully let loose with the power.-

12,733 Units lost

"A heads up that you were about to go all mad god would have been nice." Lil complained after the fight was over.

I rubbed the back of my head with a chuckle "Sorry about that. Got a tad carried away after having to keep that under wraps for so long to keep the spy from finding out." I said apologetically.

"I'm just glad he's on our side. You guys see what happened to the ones hit with that stuff? Crushed like bugs." Mordy said with a slight shudder.

"Yeah that was me making the gravity in those spots so heavy it was like standing on the surface of the sun." I said casually.

"How are you even supposed to fight something like that?" Roland asked seriously.

"You aren't. It's not a perfect ability though as it has some serious limitations. The first is that the larger the object it's used on the more draining it is. The second is that for whatever reason using it on living things is also much more draining than usual with the stronger the thing it is the more draining it gets. The final limitation is that it requires concentration to use or it will unravel in no time at all or straight up fail." I explained since I had no reason to hide it from them.

Frankly speaking even with them knowing all this it wouldn't really help them at all if they had to face it themselves as there was no easy way to counter the ability. Shields don't work, no tactic would really do shit against it and once you are caught in a bubble it's pretty much fucking game over unless the user is arrogant or already exhausted from overusing the power.-

Anyways I ended up in the hole for lifeforce by 3,916 units after I drained the corpses of their lifeforce and even had to accept that the armors and weapons were ruined in the cases of those hit with the bubbles. A bit like an aluminum can having been crushed really. I just left those where they lay on the ground as I saw no point in grabbing them. The few armors and weapons that were intact though were a nice enough prize to offset the loss I felt. We got our vehicles back from the nearby Catch-A-Ride station and headed towards the snowfields that Roland mentioned.-

It was astonishing how we went from boiling heat to frigid cold in a span of five minutes as we drove but considering the way Pandora was I just shrugged it off. The main entrance to the Atlas complex from the Salt flats was obvious when we got there as it was the first example of well maintained architecture I had seen on this armpit of a planet. The concrete and metal walls were adorned with Lance symbolism and held a smooth but clearly militaristic design.-

"Why are we parked outside a cave when the doors over there?" I asked genuinely confused as we ignored the entranceway entirely but went for the cave nearby.

"This is a backway into the complex I discovered previously when I was part of the Lance. It'll be a lot less guarded than the main way in, used to be a mine before it was decommissioned and forgotten from what I could tell." Roland explained as he Digi destructed his runner.

"Why wouldn't this be more guarded then, seems sloppy even for the Lance?" Mordy asked confused.

"It's been over run with the local wildlife so the higher ups saw no reason to guard it since it was already covered more or less. One of the reasons I fell out with the Lance to begin with since I disagreed." Roland said seriously.

"Their incompetence is our gain." I said with a grin and we headed into the mine.

It was nothing special really as it was a dug out cave system with mine rails on the floor partially covered in sand and rusted metal structuring that had some old and clearly forgotten Lance flags on it. As Roland had said however the place was infested with spider ants, big ones.-

For this this though none of us raised a finger to kill them as I had chosen to let Ladon out of the house for a bit of hunting. The big baby was nearly as big as a small car at this point and even could briefly lift off the ground with his wings. Not quite able to fly just yet but he was getting close. Despite that however he needed to get used to hunting and being active as otherwise his potential will have been wasted. Admittedly that was kinda my fault as I have been rather overprotective of him and didn't let him out when guns were involved even though I really should have.-

I honestly felt kinda bad about it when I saw the sheer joy the big reptile took in hunting these spider ants. Ladon was literally built for combat and I had been denying him that very thing. And oh did that show with how awkward he was at first. He was unsure about how to go about it at first but slowly began to get the hang of it and sharpen his proverbial fangs. The kills came faster and cleaner as we moved through the tunnels even as spider ants the same size as him showed up. -

"Hold up I don't like the look of things up ahead, it's newer and feels different than everything else." I said seriously when we reached towards the end of the cave system.

The new stuff I was talking about was neatly laid catwalk with railing leading somewhere in a VERY deliberate manner.

"This wasn't here when I left." Roland said with a stern expression while tightening his grip on his rifle.

"Sorry bud but I don't want to risk you if this turns nasty." I said apologetically to Ladon as I sent him back into my house.

As we followed the catwalk on alert the unease we felt only climbed as it became more and more obvious that this path was likely a trap. When we came to an area that led straight into a wide open and massively sized chamber with sandbag walls and cover crates with a single thick door at the far end under an observation rooms window it was clear that we were rightfully concerned. Steele appeared in the window looking down at us mockingly as she spoke through an intercom.-

"Death to any who oppose us!" she said firmly before turning around and leaving as the large door rose to reveal three very heavily armed and armored royal guards.

"Scatter!" I yelled as I saw the very obviously Eridian weapon held in the hands of one of the royal guards without a helmet for some reason.

It was a damned fucking good thing I did too as no sooner than we ran in different directions the guy raised the gun and fired off a person sized ball of pure energy that crackled through the air rapidly and fell on our previous location. The ball exploded into a huge bloom of wild electricity that covered at least ten feet in every direction, that gun was a shield killer.
