Chapter 71 - Crimson Crest - I

Unlike the standard Imperial-class Star Destroyers that made up the bulk of the fleet, the massive Allegiance-class battlecruiser Sovereign was designed with a different tactical philosophy. It did not possess a standard ventral hangar bay. Built purely for heavy capital ship combat, its underside was a solid wall of thick armor plating and heavy weapons emplacements rather than a cavernous opening for starfighters. Because of this design, the ship could not receive Rear-Admiral Aaron Rysell with a traditional formal hangar deck inspection.

Instead, the Admiral's shuttle had to dock directly with one of the Sovereign's primary docking rings. The mechanical seals hissed as they locked into place, and the heavy airlock doors slid open. Rysell stepped across the threshold, immediately followed by his personal escort of eight Wraith Troopers. They marched in perfect, synchronized rhythm, their armor clinking in unison as they entered the massive battlecruiser.

Two of the ship's onboard stormtroopers stood at attention by the docking port, waiting to guide the Admiral. They fell in front of him, leading the delegation down a series of wide, grey corridors. The scale of the Sovereign was staggering, but Rysell kept his eyes forward, his face a mask of professional indifference.

The guides eventually stopped before a pair of towering armored blast doors. As the doors hissed upward into the ceiling, the sheer scale of the ship's interior became clear. Because the vessel lacked a hangar, the crew had assembled on the primary simulation deck—a massive, flat chamber normally used for full-scale Stormtrooper combat drills and tactical exercises.

Standing before Rysell was a staggering display of Imperial military power. A full legion of twelve thousand Stormtroopers stood in incredibly tight, perfectly spaced columns. Beside them, two thousand officers stood at rigid attention.

In the center of the vast room, nearly thirty thousand naval crewmen were formed up in similar, block-like formations. The remaining twenty thousand crew members remained at their duty stations, running the massive battlecruiser on a tight skeleton crew so the ship could remain fully operational during the inspection.

In the very center of this massive gathering stood Captain Silas Thorne, the commanding officer of the Sovereign, alongside High Colonel Rasmus Kross, the legion's commander.

Rysell stepped onto the simulation deck, his Wraith Troopers maintaining their flawless pace behind him. Captain Silas Thorne was a black-haired man with a light tan and a lean, athletic build. A distinct, pale scar cut across his right cheekbone, adding a rugged edge to his appearance. Despite the scar, he looked every bit the model Imperial officer, wearing an impeccable, wrinkle-free uniform and carrying a standard-issue sidearm holstered at his hip.

High Colonel Rasmus Kross stood beside him, also in full dress uniform. He had a relatively young face, bright blue eyes, and short blonde hair. Yet, despite his youthful features, his expression was incredibly stern. From the dossiers Rysell had thoroughly reviewed before his arrival, Kross was a highly serious, no-nonsense commander who demanded absolute perfection from his troops.

Rysell slowly walked down the long rows of assembled soldiers, his sharp eyes inspecting the men as he passed. The columns were perfect—perhaps too perfect. Having spent his entire career in active combat zones, Rysell could tell almost instantly that this was not a level of discipline these men had naturally practiced and mastered over time. Instead, it was obvious that the ship's officers had frantically forced the crew to correct their posture, alignment, and spacing at the very last second to impress the arriving Admiral.

The tension on the deck was incredibly thick. The crew members were sweating heavily under the bright ceiling lights, their anxiety plain for anyone to see. Behind Rysell, Lieutenant Colonel Lux Daniul silently whispered. The Wraith Troopers' helmet filters, equipped with highly sensitive atmospheric scanners and smell-intensifiers, were picking up the unmistakable scent of collective fear and physical exhaustion. These men had been standing here for hours.

Rysell walked confidently up to the command platform, stopping directly in front of Captain Thorne. He stared the Captain down for several quiet, heavy moments. Both Thorne and High Colonel Kross managed to maintain their composure under the Admiral's cold gaze, but the department heads standing just behind them were not nearly as steady. The Chief Engineer, Chief Navigator, Chief Gunner, and Chief Operator were all visibly trembling. They were significantly younger than their superiors, and the immense pressure of the moment was clearly getting to them.

"The Allegiance-class battlecruiser Sovereign, alongside its complement of 48,455 naval crewmen and 14,677 Stormtroopers, is at your service, Admiral Rysell," Captain Thorne announced, his voice echoing off the metallic walls of the simulation deck.

In a single, massive motion, all fifty thousand men assembled in the room stomped their boots against the deck plating and saluted in perfect unison. The sound was deafening, like a thunderclap rolling through the steel cavern.

"At ease," Rysell responded calmly, returning the Captain's salute with a sharp, practiced motion of his own.

High Colonel Rasmus Kross immediately stepped forward, his voice booming across the massive deck: "AT EASE!"

With another loud, synchronized boot-stomp, the massive crowd of crewmen and troopers shifted their stance, bringing their hands behind their backs.

It was clear from their expressions that both Captain Silas and High Colonel Rasmus were highly satisfied with their crew's performance. To be fair, most Imperial Admirals would have been absolutely thrilled by such a flawless display of military precision and parade-ground theater.

Rysell, however, was not most Admirals.

"You have made a very common mistake, Captain," Rysell said, his voice quiet but carrying a distinct chill that cut through the warm air of the room. "You assumed that I care about these elaborate theatrics. Let me assure you, I do not. I am fully aware of the hours you spent drilling this crew to stand in these perfect lines. Frankly, I would have preferred if you had spent that valuable time actually breaking them into the ship's systems."

Captain Silas looked down at the deck for a fraction of a second, his confidence momentarily faltering.

"Look at me," Rysell commanded softly.

Silas immediately snapped his gaze back up, locking eyes with the Admiral.

"My ship and my fleet are run on absolute operational efficiency, not empty tradition," Rysell explained, his tone firm and direct. "The 'Crimson Crest' is currently nowhere near my required standards, and we are going to fix that immediately. I expect this battlecruiser fully prepared to jump into hyperspace within the hour."

"Yes, Admiral!" Silas responded instantly, offering another crisp salute.

Rysell nodded, satisfied with the quick response. "Have one of your officers lead me to my quarters, and instruct the navigation department to lay in our jump coordinates for the Gerrenthum system. The rest of the fleet will fall into formation and lead us out."

High Colonel Kross stepped forward to personally escort Rysell to his flag quarters. The quarters were located directly beneath the massive bridge superstructure. It was a highly practical design; while close enough to the command bridge for rapid transit, the suite was situated deep within the heavy hull plating of the ship, protecting the Admiral from being killed if a lucky enemy shot managed to obliterate the primary bridge tower.

As the blast doors to the suite slid open, Rysell stepped inside and looked around. The quarters were vastly larger than his previous accommodations. The entrance area included a fully equipped barracks specifically designed to house up to eighteen guards. The Wraith Troopers immediately moved into the space, unpacking their gear and setting up their watch rotation.

Rysell noted the security features of the suite with an appreciative eye. The ventilation ducts were reinforced and protected by active security laser grids, the blast doors were heavily armored, and the entire suite was wired into an independent security network.

The flag quarters were practically a self-contained command bunker. The suite featured four master bedrooms, three fully stocked kitchens, and three formal dining halls. For planning operations, there was a tactical room equipped with a massive, three-dimensional interactive map of the galaxy. Another adjacent room contained a specialized holotable designed specifically for fleet engagements.

Incredibly, the quarters even featured a fully functioning auxiliary bridge. In the event of a catastrophic command failure on the primary bridge, a reserve staff could step into these quarters and command the entire battlecruiser from safety. Additionally, the suite contained five different private meeting rooms for sensitive briefings.

Directly outside the suite's main entrance, a set of dedicated high-speed turbolifts connected straight to the main bridge. Moving from the tactical planning center in his quarters to the primary command deck would take less than five minutes. Rysell was genuinely taken aback by the sheer, overwhelming luxury and tactical redundancy that had been built into the flagship for its commanding Admiral.

Because the Allegiance was built from the ground up to serve as a fleet flagship, the ship's Captain had his own entirely separate set of quarters elsewhere on the ship. Rysell did not doubt that Thorne's quarters were grand, but the sheer scale of his own suite was breathtaking. To go from a single, cramped cabin with a basic terminal on a cruiser to a massive, multi-room luxury command suite on a warship of this scale was a stark reminder of the immense resources the Empire poured into its high command.

A few minutes after he settled in, a detail of Stormtroopers from the Hound arrived, carrying Rysell's personal luggage. It was a very modest amount of gear—just a few changes of uniforms, several secure military datapads, and a small case of data chips. Rather than summoning an orderly, Rysell quietly unpacked the items himself, organizing his desk with methodical precision.

Just as he finished putting away his uniform tunics, Rysell's personal comlink began to beep. He walked into the nearest private meeting room and transferred the incoming transmission to the central holotable. With a soft hum, the blue holographic form of Captain Silas Thorne flickered into life before him, standing at rigid attention with his hands clasped firmly behind his back.

"Admiral, all capital ships and support vessels in the task force have successfully linked to the Sovereign's hyperdrive codes," Thorne reported, his voice crisp and professional. "We are ready for immediate departure."

"Very good, Captain," Rysell replied. "Initiate the jump sequence. You have the conn."

Thorne saluted sharply, and his holographic image faded away.

Rysell turned and walked out of the meeting room, heading deeper into the suite until he reached the primary tactical room. He activated the central console, and a massive, glowing three-dimensional map of the galaxy sprang to life, bathing the dark room in a soft blue light.

The core systems glowed brightly in the center of the projection. In contrast, the vast, mysterious expanse of the Unknown Regions to the south of Bakura was mostly dark, showing only a few faint, dotted lines. Even though this was the most highly detailed and classified map available in the entire Galactic Archives, the uncharted territory remained a massive, terrifying blank space.

Rysell looked down at his primary objective. The task force was being sent to establish a strict naval blockade of the Gerrenthum system. Their mission was not to stop standard civilian shipping or trade, but to intercept and destroy any Rebel Alliance fleet movements attempting to slip through the sector.

Gerrenthum was a vital strategic chokepoint. To reach the Endor system from the major hyperlanes, a fleet would have to exit the massive Corellian Trade Spine at Gerrenthum. From there, they would have to travel along the Lutrilla Cross to the Cerean Reach, make a short jump to Cerean, and then cross over to the Spar Trade Route. It was a complex path, but the Empire had already established a heavily fortified defensive station at Annaj to guard the final legs of the route.

Gerrenthum itself sat at the junction of three major hyperlane jump points:

The Gerrenthum-Eriadu Hyperlane leading to the east.

The Corellian Trade Spine, which ran directly north and south.

The Lutrilla Cross leading to the west.

The Lutrilla Cross ran straight toward Endor, meaning any hostile Rebel fleet was highly unlikely to enter the system from that direction. Instead, the most probable vector of approach would be from the southern Corellian Trade Spine or the Gerrenthum-Eriadu lane. The Rebel Alliance had established strong networks of sympathizers and allies in both the Greater Seswenna sector and the Western Reaches, making those corridors highly volatile.

Rysell knew the cold, hard mathematical truth of their situation. If the main Rebel fleet actually decided to push through this sector, his task force would be devastatingly outmatched. Imperial Intelligence reports indicated that the Rebels had assembled a massive armada, boasting over twenty MC80 Heavy Star Cruisers, hundreds of smaller support warships, and thousands of highly capable X-Wing, A-Wing, and Y-Wing starfighters.

If that armada arrived, Rysell's fleet might be able to hold them off for a day or two at absolute best. But doing so would completely destroy his entire task force, ruining any hopes he had of maintaining his independent military power in the chaotic times ahead.

In truth, Rysell had no intention of fighting a suicidal, glorious last stand for Coruscant. If the main Rebel fleet appeared, he planned to make a brief, nominal show of resistance to satisfy his official duty, and then immediately order a full tactical retreat.

He strongly doubted the Rebels would even attempt to use the main hyperlanes anyway. The Alliance had been operating in the shadows of the Outer Rim for years. Through their extensive networks of smugglers and fringers, they had almost certainly discovered old, uncharted smuggler routes that would allow them to sneak their massive fleet toward their target without ever triggering the Imperial blockades on the main lanes.

Because of this, Rysell had half a mind to largely ignore the heavy blockade duties. He planned to station a few Vindicator-class heavy cruisers, Strike-class cruisers, and Carrack-class light vessels along the primary jump points. These smaller warships were more than powerful enough to handle any local pirate or smuggler threat, yet they were fast and agile enough to quickly escape if the main Rebel fleet suddenly reverted to realspace.

His most critical and pressing task right now was not fighting the Rebels, but securing the absolute loyalty of his own fleet. This newly assembled task force had never fought under his command before. They did not share the deep, hard-earned trust and fierce loyalty that the veterans of his old 32nd Squadron possessed.

Fortunately, most of the experienced crew members from the Relentless and the Griffon had survived their previous engagements. Rysell planned to systematically split these veterans up, scattering them across the bridge crews of his newly assigned vessels to act as his eyes, ears, and stabilizing anchors.

As part of this restructuring, Lieutenant Commander Cedric Oswell would be promoted to the rank of Commander and placed in direct charge of the Sovereign's critical gunnery sections.

While Captain Luca Vene and Captain Thara Vez were fully expected to maintain strict, loyal control over their respective crews, Rysell's remaining reserve veterans would be spread thin. He would place them aboard the Sovereign, but he would also target the ships commanded by officers he did not entirely trust.

A large portion of these loyal veterans would be reassigned to Captain Zed Lorak's Apex VI to keep the arrogant captain in check, while others would be sent to monitor the unpredictable Maxim Vance aboard the CerberusIV. The remaining veteran crew members from the Griffon, Relentless, and several of the Strike cruisers would be systematically integrated into the crews of the GorgonII, the ImperiousIX, and the three massive Secutor-class battlecarriers.

On the ground side, the newly promoted Marshal Catcher was handed a monumental task: he had to completely restructure and revitalize the Stormtrooper officer corps. The fleet's ground forces had suddenly expanded from two active legions to ten, creating a massive shortage of experienced leadership. To solve this, a massive wave of promotions was underway. Junior officers were being rapidly elevated to line officers, while experienced line officers were being promoted to flag ranks.

Shifting the High Colonels who commanded each legion would be politically difficult and highly disruptive. Instead, Rysell chose a more subtle approach. While the High Colonels would keep their ceremonial commands, Rysell would ensure that the vital slots for Lieutenant Colonels and Majors directly beneath them were filled almost entirely by his own trusted, veteran officers.

This restructuring would not hurt the combat competency of the Stormtroopers. In fact, by blending his seasoned veterans with the fresh recruits, they would create a far more balanced, highly capable fighting force over the next six months of intense training. The only real risk was that Rysell's original veteran legions might temporarily struggle under the command of newly promoted rookie officers, but it was a calculated risk he was willing to take.

To prevent Imperial Intelligence and the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) from sniffing around his unorthodox fleet restructuring, Chief Hannah Tyrren had executed a clever counter-strategy. She had deliberately gathered some of the most fanatical, politically aggressive "Imperial loyalist" agents in the sector and placed them all together on a single, easily monitored ship. This concentration of potential threats made them incredibly easy to watch, allowing Rysell's loyalists to easily eliminate them all in a single, clean sweep if they ever attempted to sabotage his plans.

As Rysell reviewed the organizational charts, he was still suprised by the idiocy in the structure of the Imperial military. Unlike most traditional governments, the Galactic Empire did not have a clean, logical chain of command at the very top. This was a deliberate design choice by Emperor Palpatine. By creating overlapping authorities and constant administrative rivalries, the Emperor ensured that no single military leader could ever gather enough organized power to launch a successful coup against him.

At the top sat Sate Pestage and the Imperial Ruling Council, generally recognized as the civilian executive branch of the government. But further down, the system fractured. While the Grand Admiral of the Navy was the formal head of the fleet, the real power rested with the twelve Grand Admirals, who commanded massive, independent armadas and answered only to the Emperor himself.

The Grand Moffs wielded immense regional power, running their massive Oversectors like independent kingdoms with very little interference from the civilian Ruling Council on Coruscant. This chaos meant the military officers in the fleet held deep contempt for the civilian politicians on the Council, viewing them as nothing more than backstabbing bureaucrats who had never seen a day of real combat.

For the Stormtrooper Corps, the chain of command was remarkably simple:

The Galactic Emperor

Supreme Commander Lord Vader

Imperial High Command

The Legion's Commanding Officer

Imperial High Command rarely issued orders directly to individual Stormtrooper units, choosing instead to pass directives down through the local commanding officers. Rysell knew that if the Emperor and Lord Vader were ever to fall in a single, catastrophic battle, the entire top-heavy structure would instantly collapse. Without its absolute leaders, Imperial High Command would fracture, buried under its own power struggles and deserters.

For Rysell to survive the coming storm, gaining absolute, unquestioned control over the Stormtroopers stationed within his fleet was of paramount importance. With their massive numbers spread across every capital ship and garrison, the Stormtroopers would ultimately decide the fate of his task force. Neither he nor Marshal Catcher had a single moment to waste.
