Chapter 51 - Riflor - 2

RIFLOR SYSTEM — ONBOARD A LUCREHULK-CLASS BATTLESHIP

Within the shadowed interior of a Lucrehulk-class Battleship, repurposed from a forgotten age of galactic war, the air was heavy with quiet tension. This vessel, once a standard Separatist warship, now served as the flagship of a hidden fleet stationed in a defensive grid above the planet Riflor. The design was unmistakable—ringed, circular, and massive—but this one had been heavily modified. Its bridge had been "organicanized," re-engineered to allow organic crew members full control over a ship once meant solely for droids.

At the helm stood a man—tall, unmoving, silent. His face was obscured beneath a helmet, one that bore striking resemblance to the clone cadet helmets once used by the Grand Army of the Republic. But this was no ordinary clone issue.

The helmet's visor was pitch-black, devoid of any visible reflection, and the armor's usual dull white had been replaced with a matte charcoal gray.

The man wore no armor beyond that helmet. His attire was minimalist—a fitted black shirt, dark trousers, and a flowing black trench coat that reached down to his boots. A single blaster pistol rested holstered at his hip, clearly customized, with a longer barrel and non-standard grip plating. Nothing about him was uniform. Everything about him was deliberate.

He stood alone in the center of the bridge, unmoved by the frantic activity around him. Officers rushed from console to console, issuing commands and managing the systems of this vast ship. The quiet shuffle of boots on metal was the only soundtrack in the otherwise silent chamber. Despite the chaos, an uneasy stillness hung over everything, as if the ship itself held its breath.

"It is time for the galaxy to remember fear," the man thought, his mind burning cold behind the mask. "The shadows of the Republic will rise once more. And I will be at the very forefront of it all."

His presence was magnetic—and terrifying. The crew gave him a wide berth, glancing at him only when they believed it safe. They didn't yet know him. Only rumors. Whispers. He was a ghost to them, a story brought to life—and stories were far more dangerous when they moved.

Among the bridge crew was a young gunner. His eyes, though trained to remain focused on his duties, drifted far too often toward the man in black. Toward Phoenix.

This man—this enigma—was the reason he was here.

Codename: Phoenix. A shadow, a myth, a ghost. For years, he had been a figure of whispered dread within the halls of Imperial Intelligence. They had pursued him endlessly. Always ten steps behind, always too late. He was always gone by the time they arrived—until now.

The young gunner was no mere crewman. He was an I.I. operative—undercover, deep within enemy ranks. And he had never felt so close to success.

"To think, sheer luck would land him into my hands," he thought, heartbeat rising. "After years of chasing dead ends, the galaxy hands him to me on a silver platter. All I have to do is reach out..."

Phoenix had sat atop the Imperial Most Wanted list for years, with the Emperor himself ordering repeated efforts to locate and eliminate him. Rumors suggested he had taken command of a rogue Separatist fleet, long thought decommissioned, and that he possessed an unnatural knack for survival—worse yet, for strategy.

"I just need to inform the I.I. before he disappears again," the gunner thought. The risk of exposure was rising, but the reward now outweighed all fear. If he succeeded, he would be hailed a hero within Intelligence. Honors, promotion, recognition—all within reach.

He made his move.

Standing slowly—casually—he exited the bridge, slipping past officers and sentries with practiced ease. His footsteps echoed softly as he navigated through the Lucrehulk's winding halls, seeking a blind spot. A surveillance dead zone. Somewhere hidden.

Unbeknownst to him, Phoenix turned.

Behind his mask, the black-helmed man's gaze tracked the spy's movement with chilling precision. He watched the gunner go, never once breaking the silence. His stare lingered long after the blast doors sealed behind the departing traitor.

The operative moved quickly, sliding into a small corridor off the main pathway. It was a forgotten junction, narrow and dimly lit, with exposed piping and flickering wall panels. Surveillance feeds didn't reach here. This was the perfect place.

And tucked into a corner—right where he expected—was a mouse droid.

The little black-plated unit seemed harmless, whirring softly to itself as it conducted routine maintenance. But Phoenix used these droids for more than cleaning. They were his eyes and ears. Surveillance units. Spies.

Perfect, the agent thought.

He knelt, producing a small injector module from a hidden compartment in his sleeve. The device pulsed green, loaded with a program designed to override the mouse droid's systems and reroute any outgoing signals directly to the Imperial Network.

He pressed the injector into a concealed port, then tapped a hidden switch on the droid's hull. A holographic interface flared to life above it—basic, efficient: keyboard, message field, encryption settings.

He began to type:

"FUGITIVE: PHOENIX LOCATED. Riflor System. Lucrehulk-Class Flagship. Majority of his fleet also present. Suspected deal with local government. Personal notes: Preparing for something—goal unknow—"

A sudden flash of green.

A blaster bolt sizzled through the air, hitting him square in the chest. The corridor lit up in a brief burst of green light. The agent gasped—once—then dropped lifelessly to the floor, smoke rising from the blackened wound in his torso.

Standing at the end of the corridor was Phoenix, arm extended, blaster pistol still warm from the shot. He said nothing.

He approached the fallen man in silence. Without pausing, he raised his blaster again and fired four precise shots into the mouse droid. It exploded in a burst of sparks and flame.

The corridor went dark again.

Phoenix activated his wrist console, inputting a series of commands. A hidden hatch opened above, and four Commando Droids dropped to the floor with synchronized metallic thuds. They rose in perfect formation, black visors glowing faintly.

Phoenix gave no verbal order. None was needed.

They understood.

Two droids recovered the spy's corpse. The other two retrieved what remained of the droid. Then, just as silently, they disappeared—leaping back into the ceiling hatch, vanishing into maintenance shafts that didn't exist on any official blueprint of the Lucrehulk.

Phoenix holstered his weapon and returned to the bridge, his footsteps quiet and steady.

UNKNOWN SYSTEM — ABOARD THE STAR DESTROYER 'LEVIATHAN'

Commodore Aaron Rysell stood with hands clasped behind his back, staring into the swirling void of hyperspace. The Leviathan, a sleek and modernized Imperial-class Star Destroyer, remained stationary in a system not listed on any current star charts—just outside Riflor's reach.

His officers moved around him, engaged in delicate calibration of a new jump route. The Riflor system had recently been masked with unknown gravitational signatures, and caution was paramount. One misstep in hyperspace navigation could mean instant death.

Yet Aaron's thoughts were elsewhere.

He was reviewing the battle plan, running simulation after simulation in his mind, analyzing every variable, every strength and flaw. He had fought hundreds of battles before—but Phoenix? Phoenix was a wildcard. A ghost. Dangerous not only because of his fleet, but because of what he represented: unpredictability.

"Commodore! Incoming transmission—Imperial Intelligence classification!" a communications officer called out suddenly.

Aaron's attention snapped back to reality.

"Unknown origin?" he asked, already moving toward the console.

"Yes, sir. No traceable signature. But I.I classification confirmed."

"That's... unusual," Aaron muttered. "The I.I. never uses unidentified transmissions. Ever."

He reached the comms desk and his expression hardened. The pre-display confirmed the transmission's authenticity. The clearance code was unmistakable.

"I.I. Undercover Rapport. Clearance: C2+"

"Purge all trace of this transmission from the ship's logs. Now. Redirect it to my personal datapad," Aaron ordered.

The comms officer obeyed instantly, and the encrypted file transferred.

Aaron stepped into the Rear Operations Room (ROR) behind the main bridge. His elite Wraith Troopers followed, snapping into formation.

"Clear the room. Lock the door. Formation G-A-4."

Within moments, the ROR was sealed. Two troopers posted inside, two outside.

Alone, Aaron leaned against the HoloTable and entered his security clearance. The report flickered into view.

It was short. Disturbingly short.

"FUGITIVE: PHOENIX LOCATED. Riflor System. Lucrehulk - Flagship. Most of his fleet spotted. Deal with the local government suspected. Personal Notes: He's preparing for something, goal unknow—"

The message cut off abruptly.

"Caught mid-transmission," Aaron muttered. "Almost certainly during composition. But…"

He narrowed his eyes. Mouse droids. That was likely the method. And if it was, then the virus embedded in the droid would've stored every keystroke in real-time. Standard I.I. protocol ensured that any attempt to destroy the droid would trigger an auto-upload to the nearest active Imperial archive.

If that droid had even a millisecond before destruction… it succeeded.

Aaron accessed the I.I. fugitive database and entered the clearance required to declassify Phoenix's file. The document loaded slowly, filled with redactions and classified entries.
