Until....
The next day, the air was filled with anticipation as I prepared for the showcase ceremony. I meticulously packed my selected artworks, each piece a testament to my dedication and talent. As I moved through the studio, I felt a strange presence, a chill that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I glanced around but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Shaking off the feeling, I continued loading the paintings into the truck.
Margaret arrived to help; her excitement palpable. "Tomorrow's the big day! I can't wait to see everyone's reaction to your work."
I smiled, though the unease lingered in the back of my mind. "I know, it's going to be amazing."
We finished loading the truck and headed to the venue. The day passed in a blur of final preparations and last-minute adjustments. As evening fell, I finally began unpacking my paintings, carefully arranging them for the showcase.
But as I unwrapped the last canvas, my heart stopped. It was a painting I didn't recognize—an alluring scene of withered roses, dark and haunting to my eyes. And in the center of the canvas was a figure that made my blood run cold. It was me, depicted in an inappropriate and disturbing manner.
My hands trembled as I stared at the painting. "Margaret, come here," I called, my voice barely above a whisper. Margaret remains silent as her eyes widened as she took in the disturbing image on the canvas. Her face paled, and she took an involuntary step back, her hand flying to her mouth.
"Oh my god," she whispered, her voice trembling. "This is… this is horrifying."
She turned to me, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination as her gaze shifted back to the painting, her expression hardening.
The figure in the painting was hauntingly lifelike, almost as if it could step out of the canvas at any moment. It was a twisted, grotesque version of myself, captured in a moment of torment. My face was contorted in an expression of fear and anguish, eyes wide and hollow, as if they had seen unspeakable horrors. The skin was pale, almost translucent, with dark shadows accentuating the gauntness of my cheeks and the sharpness of my jawline.
My hair, usually neat and well-kept, was disheveled and wild, cascading around my face like a dark halo. The strands seemed to move on their own, as if caught in an invisible wind. My hands were outstretched, fingers clawing at the air, as if trying to grasp something just out of reach. The nails were long and cracked, stained with a dark, ominous substance that looked like dried blood.
The clothing was tattered and torn, hanging off my frame in ragged strips, I was practically naked, and every damn thing is exactly same as my body, as if someone studied my naked body before capturing it on this canvas. The remaining fabric was soaked in a deep crimson, blending with the withered roses that surrounded me. The roses themselves were a macabre touch, their petals blackened and curling, as if they had been scorched by an unseen fire. Thorns twisted around my limbs, digging into the flesh and drawing thin lines of blood.
The background of the painting was equally disturbing. It depicted a dark, foreboding landscape, with twisted dried oak trees and a sky that seemed to be perpetually caught in twilight. Shadows loomed in the distance; their shapes indistinct but menacing. The entire scene was suffused with a sense of dread, as if something malevolent was lurking just beyond the edges of the canvas.
The most unsettling aspect of the painting was the eyes. They seemed to follow me wherever I moved, filled with a malevolent intelligence. It was as if the figure was alive, trapped within the confines of the canvas, and desperately trying to communicate a warning or a plea for help.
"This clearly isn't your work, but it's clear someone wants to send a message. We can't ignore this, especially not with the showcase tomorrow." She reached out and gently touched my arm, her grip firm and reassuring. "We'll figure this out together. You're not alone in this."
I shook my head, tears welling up in my eyes. "I don't know. I felt something in the studio earlier, but I thought it was just my imagination."
As the room seemed to grow colder and the shadows lengthened around us, Margaret's resolve only strengthened. "We need to be careful. Whoever did this might still be watching. Let's get through the showcase, but we need to stay vigilant."
