Chapter 60 - The End

After the battle, only 15 of the 22 wolves survived. The most notable losses were Jake, Embry, and Collin. The rest were new members who sadly died far too young.

Sam, upon getting back, learned Emily was in labor and rushed to the hospital, where they welcomed a wonderful new boy to the world.

"He's beautiful, isn't he?" asked Emily happily holding him.

Sam smiled and then asked, "Can we name him Embry?"

Emily froze, then looked at him, tears welling up, giving a nod, "Okay," she croaked as Sam gave her a comforting hug with one arm while affectionately rubbing his son's head.

A funeral was held for all those who fell, their names commemorated in front and inside their council hall for all to see who fought and died for them.

Later, there was some friction within the reservation about the decision to go out and start raiding again, but Dean wasn't having it. The vampires were leaderless now, and the longer they waited, the more people would die and turn once the wider population of vampires learned of it, chaos would reign.

They would need to act fast, and they had already wasted enough time with the funeral and letting everyone rest.

And so, they hunted, and the world soon learned what was hiding in the dark when the news hit about the Volturi's fall.

Humans did their best to combat it, and for a time, it seemed impossible to prevent the spread of vampires and their powerful resurgence, until the humans finally got a hang of how to take out the regular ones with their advanced weaponry, but even that failed against the gifted, the deadliest threat the vampire race could muster.

It was up to the wolves to take them down, which was slow going and difficult to implement when they still had to hide from humans lest they become targets too. It eventually all came down to Dean, who only grew stronger and stronger, and soon, his speed was at a point where he could outpace the vamps.

At that point, the other wolves were allowed to go home, with Dean taking it upon himself to wipe them all out.

.

He's been hunting alone for a while now, traveling the world, killing all he could find.

Leah was with him in the beginning—they all were—but when she got pregnant under the growing human threat while the vampire threat lessened. The rest came with him less and less until only he remained, driven by a hungry need to see it finished.

At this time, His strength was to the point that he didn't need them anymore as he traveled the world ridding it of its vampiric plague.

And though he did his best to avoid humans, there were times he was spotted and shot at, though they had no hope of hurting or tracking him down.

The biggest issue that developed was vampires fleeing into the ocean, forcing him to camp the shoreline, waiting for their hunger to drive them out.

He knew the spirits didn't intend for him alone to end everything within one generation, but they never foresaw how powerful he would become. Even in his human form, he was no more than a blur to all, with strength enough to destroy even the most gifted hidden vampires.

In the end, it looked like the spirits won, but it was becoming more doubtful as time passed whether they would ever wake again, possibly having drained themselves dry in improving the wolves and creating him.

He wondered about the future and whether the wolf's blood would dry out and leave nothing but humans in a dull world devoid of anything magical. He may have ended the vampires, but the damage they reaped was irreversible, for they were the last of a once-thriving magical world.

At least now they were gone, and he could go home to his family and live a long happy life with his wife and brood.

...

Many years later, he finds Bella in a cozy, hidden-away cottage in the mountains.

"Hello Dean," said Bella, stepping out, her skin sparkling in the sun.

Dean grinned, "Hello, little rabbit. Nice hiding spot."

"Clearly not good enough," said Bella mournfully.

"Well, you're the last one if it's any consolation," said Dean, his stomach growling, having grown increasingly painful over the years with the last of the vampires.

"It's not," said Bella sharply.

"Tell me, Bella, was it worth it?" asked Dean, looking up into the sunny sky.

"For a little while," she sadly smiled, looking up, enjoying what could be her last moments.

"You know what I have to do," said Dean, meeting her eyes.

"I know," she said, her voice taking on a bit of grit.

He smirked. She was certainly something special, "Goodbye Bella."

"Goodbye Dean," she said and attacked, thinking she'd get him before he shifts, unaware that he's grown beyond such limitations.

He flashes by, her head in his hands as her body erupts into flames. He gives it one last lingering look, kissing her forehead goodbye, and lets the sun take it.

.

He then goes home, Leah throws open the door sensing his return, and runs into his arms.

The warm feeling of being home instantly hits him as he hugs his wife.

"It's done, the last vampire is dead," he says, wiping a few stray tears that escape her eyes.

"Welcome home," she says, giving him a loving kiss.

"It's good to be back," he grins, giving her another kiss.

"And the hunger?" She asked worriedly.

"Instantly went away after the last one, and haven't felt it since," said Dean.

"Good," she said, walking back inside with him.

They heard a crash and some loud thumping from down the hall.

"Seems they finally noticed," said Leah, amusedly.

Then three dog-sized wolves came running at him excitedly from around the corner into his loving arms, barking excitedly.

"Hello little wolves," he laughed as they jumped all over him, licking his face.

"Girls, what did I say about shifting inside the house?" Leah said, failing to sound intimidating as the happy sight got to her.

The girls shifted back, screaming, "Daddy, daddy, daddy!"

The three girls coming at him wildly.

"How are my girls doing?" he asked, picking them up and spinning around, enjoying their excited giggling. "And where is your brother?"

"He's being a poopy head," said Mary.

"Now, now, don't say that. What's happened?" asked Dean.

The three of them explained in their childlike way how their brother was being unfriendly and wanted them to leave him alone.

"He's been upset at not being able to shift," Leah whispered into his ear, not wanting the girls to make fun of him.

"I'll go see him," said Dean, "You girls wait for me here while I talk to your brother."

"Okay," they sighed, dissatisfied.

He knocks on his son's door before walking in, "Hey, not going to come greet your old man?" he asks, finding his son sitting on his bed unhappily.

Not getting a response, he sits down next to him, "What's wrong little guy?"

"I'm the only one who isn't a wolf," he cried, tears flowing down his face.

"You're probably just a late bloomer; boys often are I hear. I also hear that no one else besides your sisters has shifted, not even Embry, and he's older than you, so you have nothing to be upset about," said Dean.

Seeing his words beginning to resonate with his son, he continued rubbing his son's back, "Cheer up. How about I take you out camping, just the two of us."

That seemed to help as his son Trenton wiped his tears, "Okay."

"No fair, no fair, we want to come to!" cried the girls, bursting in after overhearing them, jumping on him, pushing and pulling his legs and arms indignantly.

Seeing his son about to burst into tears again, Dean tried to placate them, "Now, now, I can take you all later, but I think Trenton deserves some time alone with me. It can be a lot being the only boy in the family. Girls, please try and understand."

"But, but, we want to spend time with you too," cried Evy, with the other two echoing her sentiments.

"And you will. It's only one time, so don't be sad. You'll all get your chance to spend time with me. I'm not going anywhere anymore; my job is done. I'll be home all the time now that you might get sick of me," he laughed.

"No, never," they shook their heads.

"We'll never get sick of you Daddy," said Aly, and they all hugged him fiercely.

"Is that right," he chuckled.

"Yes!" they all nodded.

"I'll remember that when you're older," he grinned, picking them up. "Let's go see what your mom's doing," he said, heading to the kitchen to see what Leah was up to.

Stopping at the door, "Well, you coming?" he asked Trenton, who slowly got off the bed to follow.

"Finally learned how to cook I see," he joked.

"Someone had to, since you weren't here. Kim and Emily are busy with their kids, and Mom has her own life now with Charlie, so it was up to me," said Leah.

It was a shame they never made up with Rachel. The blacks took it hard when they learned about what happened with Jake. When Billy passed, Rachel immediately packed up and left with Paul following right after, upon receiving Dean's blessing, though he was smart enough never to tell her that.

"Well, I'm here now, but I am interested in how you stack up," he grinned.

Leah snorted, "Please, I know how to make more than just simple food like eggs, burgers, and plain grilling."

"Ouch, you wound me, and to think I thought it was my cooking that wooed you," said Dean.

"Bad mommy, bad mommy, don't hurt daddy," said the girls.

She rolled her eyes, "We both know it wasn't your cooking," and they both laughed at their inside joke, leaving the kids confused.

Feeling a tug on his clothes, he looks down at Trenton, "Yeah little buddy?"

"You can cook?" Asked the little boy, surprised at his manly father doing something he perceived as womanly. Since he's been trying his hardest to imitate him and distance himself from the females in his life.

"Of course, everyone should know how. It's a necessary part of life," Dean said to his son, who kept looking at him in wonder.

A fierce determination took over his son's face, "Then I'll learn how to cook too," making Leah and Dean break out in laughter again at his adorableness.

"Us, too, us too," screamed the girls, not wanting to be left out.

"We'll make it a family event," said Dean happily, putting the girls down to help his wife set the table as she finished up.

"And how about after dinner, we go out back and make s'mores. Would you like that my little wolves?" he asked.

"Yay!"

The End.
