Chapter 74 - Good night.

After dinner, I headed upstairs to my room, the exhaustion of the day catching up with me. The school was waiting for me in the morning, and I knew I needed to get some rest. As I climbed into bed, I was too tired to pay much attention to my surroundings. Soon, I was fast asleep, the events of the day fading into dreams.

Downstairs, the mood at the dining table had shifted. The laughter and lighthearted banter from earlier were replaced by a somber tension as Dad began to speak. His tone was grave, his expression serious as he looked around the table at his children.

"The trip I went on," Dad began, his voice low and measured, "was a deadly one. Thank God I came back alive. I couldn't brush off the fact that I might have never seen my children ever again."

Jacqueline's eyes widened, her playful demeanor vanishing in an instant. "What do you mean, Dad? What happened?"

Mark and Anushka exchanged worried glances, their hands still intertwined under the table. Jerry, who had been leaning back in his chair, sat up straight, his expression suddenly serious.

Dad took a deep breath, his gaze steady as he looked at each of them in turn. "I went to the north. We confronted Thomas Pezi. It was… intense. We managed to take him down, but it wasn't easy. Otim was with us, and he… he didn't make it."

The room fell silent, the weight of Dad's words sinking in. Jacqueline's hand flew to her mouth, her eyes filled with shock and grief. "Otim's dead?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Mark's jaw tightened, his grip on Anushka's hand tightening unconsciously. "Thomas Pezi is gone," he said, his tone hard. "That's something, at least."

Dad nodded, but his expression remained grim. "Yes, Thomas is dead. But he wasn't the mastermind. He was just working for someone else—someone we still don't know. The real culprit is still out there."

Anushka's breath caught, her eyes wide with fear. "What does that mean for us? Are we in danger?"

Dad's gaze softened as he looked at her, his tone reassuring but firm. "We need to be careful. All of us. This isn't over, and until we find out who's behind all of this, we can't let our guard down."

Jacqueline leaned forward, her voice sharp with concern. "Dad, you can't just drop this on us and expect us to act like everything's normal. What are we supposed to do? How do we protect ourselves?"

Dad sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I know it's a lot to take in, but we'll get through this together. For now, I need you all to be vigilant. Watch your surroundings, avoid unnecessary risks, and keep each other safe."

Mark's expression was dark, his mind clearly racing as he processed the information. "Do we have any leads? Any idea who this 'real culprit' might be?"

Dad shook his head, his frustration evident. "Not yet. But we're working on it. In the meantime, we need to stay united. We're stronger together."

Anushka's voice was soft but filled with determination. "We'll be careful, Mr. Bendilani. And we'll support each other. That's what family does."

Dad smiled, his eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Anushka. That means a lot."

Jerry, who had been unusually quiet, finally spoke up, his tone serious. "Dad, if there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I might not be involved in the family business, but I'm still a Bendilani. I'll do whatever it takes to protect this family."

Dad's smile widened, his pride in his children evident. "I know you will, son. And I'm grateful for that."

The table fell silent again, the weight of the conversation hanging heavy in the air. Jacqueline leaned back in her chair, her arms crossed over her chest as she stared at the table, her mind clearly racing. Mark's expression was hard, his jaw clenched as he processed the implications of Dad's words. Anushka's hand remained in his, her presence a steadying force.

Finally, Dad broke the silence, his tone firm but reassuring. "We'll get through this. We always do. But for now, let's focus on staying safe and looking out for each other. That's the most important thing."

Mark nodded, his voice steady. "We've got this, Dad. Whatever comes our way, we'll handle it together."

Jacqueline and Jerry echoed his sentiment, their expressions filled with determination. Anushka squeezed Mark's hand, her gaze meeting his. "We'll be careful," she said softly. "And we'll protect each other."

Dad smiled, his eyes filled with pride and love as he looked at his family. "That's all I can ask for. Now, let's clean up and get some rest. Tomorrow's a new day, and we'll face it together."

As they began to clear the table, the mood remained somber but united. The threat was real, and the road ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: the Bendilanis were a family, and they would face whatever came their way together.

The house was quiet as the family retreated to their rooms, the weight of the evening's conversation still lingering in the air. Mark and Anushka walked side by side down the hallway, their footsteps soft against the carpeted floor. The tension from earlier had eased, replaced by a quiet sense of solidarity and connection. As they reached the door to Anushka's room, Mark paused, his hand gently catching hers.

"Ruhi," he said softly, his voice breaking the silence. "Wait."

Anushka turned to face him, her expression a mix of curiosity and warmth. "What is it, Mark?"

Mark took a step closer, his gaze steady but filled with affection. "I just wanted to say… I know today was a lot. The article, Dad's news, everything. But I don't want you to worry. I called Patrick earlier, and he's going to make sure the article gets taken down. It'll be off the internet by tomorrow."

Anushka's eyes widened, her surprise evident. "You… you already took care of it?"

Mark nodded, his tone reassuring. "Of course. I told you I'd handle it, didn't I? I don't want you stressing over something like that. You've got enough on your plate."

Anushka's heart swelled with gratitude, and she reached up, her hand resting against his cheek. "Thank you, Mark. That means a lot to me."

Mark smiled, his hand covering hers. "Anything for you, Ruhi. You know that."

For a moment, they just stood there, the silence between them filled with unspoken emotions. The dim light of the hallway cast a soft glow over them, making the moment feel almost surreal. Anushka's breath caught as Mark leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a kiss that was tender but filled with promise.

When they pulled apart, Anushka's cheeks were flushed, her eyes shining with affection. "I love you, Mark," she whispered, her tone filled with love.

Mark chuckled, his thumb brushing against her cheek. "I love you. Always will do."

Anushka smiled, her heart full.

Mark's grin widened, and he leaned in to kiss her again, this time lingering a little longer. When he finally pulled back, his voice was soft but firm. "Get some rest, Ruhi."

Anushka nodded, her smile never fading. "Goodnight, Mark."

"Goodnight, Ruhi," Mark replied, his gaze warm as he watched her step into her room and close the door behind her.
