These were fragments of the Lord of the Mist himself from past cycles, and it was their existence that allowed him to break through Ophelia's blockade at the crucial moment.

The Lord of the Mist's consciousness transmitted forward, then those figures shattered with a boom, having completed their final mission, while the Lord of the Mist, now enveloped in all his power, charged deep into Roger's soul.

The collision of souls stirred the whole Sea of Mist into a tempest. Almost without hesitation, Ophelia ignored the crack on her face and surged to Roger's side.
