The eye of the hurricane lifted towering columns of water, instantly tilting the waters of Biscayne into the Venice development area, which featured 'Gondola' boats, turning it into a vast expanse of water. A five-masted iron sailing ship was gently lifted by the hurricane and then heavily tossed onto the streets of Coral Pavilion. Large steamships at the seaside amusement park were thrown onto the streets of Miami like children's toys. Trees were uprooted, and piles of lumber, steel bars, pipes, tiles, gravel, and even small cars at construction sites were mixed into a whirlwind, flung high into the air only to be fiercely smashed onto houses, resulting in instant destruction and devastation.
