Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Gathering of Shadows

Chapter 29: The Gathering of Shadows

The enemy's main camp was more fortified than ever. Heavily armed guards patrolled every corner, their expressions tense and disciplined. The entire camp was buzzing with activity, yet inside one of the largest tents, the atmosphere was tense and silent.

In a dark and heavily protected tent, two figures sat across from each other, their expressions serious. One of them was a woman, her lower face covered with a cloth mask. However, the strangest thing about her wasn't her concealed face—it was the two pairs of insect-like wings protruding from her back. She was the 2nd leader of the criminals, known as Bugs Queen. She was feared for her ability to control swarms of deadly insects and her mastery over poison, a deadly combination that made her a nightmare on the battlefield.

Across from her, in the dimly lit corner of the tent, sat a man who was almost invisible in the shadows. If someone wasn't paying close attention, they wouldn't even realize another person was in the room. His entire body, including his face, was covered in dark cloth, and his eyes were ghostly white—completely devoid of pupils. Despite his ghostly eyes, he could see everything, even things that normal people could never notice. He was the 3rd leader, the Assassin's Master. Among the five criminal leaders, he was the weakest in raw power, but what made him truly terrifying was his stealth ability, which allowed him to vanish into thin air, even in broad daylight.

The room was filled with tension. Neither of them spoke for a long time, the weight of their plans pressing down on them. Finally, it was Bug Queen who broke the silence.

"So, what was the alliance's response?" she asked, her voice smooth yet laced with venom.

The Assassin's Master tilted his head slightly before answering in a calm, emotionless tone. "They accepted the challenge. The alliance is ready for an all-out war."

Silence fell between them once again. Neither of them looked surprised—it was expected. The alliance had no other choice. The war had reached a stage where both sides were equally strong. A decisive battle was necessary.

After another long pause, this time it was the Assassin who spoke first. "Have you heard anything from him?"

Bug Queen's expression darkened slightly. "Yes. I was informed that the task he went for has been completed. However, it will still take some time before he returns."

At these words, Assassin's Master's fingers twitched slightly. Though his face was hidden behind his mask, his body language betrayed his unease. He hesitated before asking, "Then… what now?"

For the first time, Bugs Queen hesitated. She seemed uncertain, her fingers tapping lightly against the wooden table. Then, after a moment of thought, she spoke.

"Perhaps… it's time to unleash him into the war."

The moment those words left her lips, the assassin's body stiffened. A cold shiver ran down his spine, though he tried to hide it.

He hesitated before replying, his voice quieter than before. "Are you… sure about that? Would that be the right choice?"

Bug Queen didn't answer immediately. Instead, she met his gaze with a knowing look, one that seemed to say, Even I don't know if it's a good idea.

For a few seconds, they simply stared at each other. Then, at the same time, both of them let out a quiet sigh as if accepting an inevitable decision. Without another word, they both turned and left the room.

The two leaders made their way toward a more isolated part of the camp. Unlike the main areas, which were heavily guarded by large numbers, this place had far fewer guards—but the guards in this section were different. They weren't just any criminals. These were the strongest, most battle-hardened warriors under the criminals' command, Even in an army filled with murderers and criminals, these guards stood out as monsters among monsters.

After several minutes, they reached at the end of this heavily restricted area where a large underground bunker was. Without a word, Bug Queen and Assassin's Master entered, their steps eerily synchronized as they made their way down to the lowest level.

As they descended, the air grew thick with an overwhelming stench of blood. It wasn't the metallic scent of a fresh wound—it was something deeper, older, and far more unsettling.

At the bottom of the bunker, a single metal door stood before them. The smell was strongest here, leaking through the cracks in the doorway.

Bugs Queen turned to the two guards standing at the door. She pointed at one of them. "Open the door. Wake him up. Tell him that the Second and Third Leaders wish to meet with him."

The other guard let out a relieved breath, thankful that he wasn't the one given the order. But the unfortunate guard who was chosen visibly tensed. His face turned pale, and he hesitated. He wanted to protest, but no words came out.

The guard clenched his fists, realizing he had no choice, he cursed the leaders silently in his heart before stepping forward. Gritting his teeth, He placed his hand on the heavy iron door, pushing it open. As soon as it creaked open slightly, the overwhelming stench of blood and decay filled the corridor. The guard clenched his jaw, forcing himself to step inside.

As he reached for the heavy iron lock, another guard behind them quietly whispered a prayer.

A few seconds passed.

Then, suddenly—

A scream erupted from inside the room.

The chilling, bloodcurdling sound echoed through the underground bunker.

Bug Queen and Assassin's Master stood still, their expressions unreadable as the scream slowly faded into silence.
