I turned off the TV right after finishing breakfast. After the news finished, there would only be a slew of ads and nonsense show trailers anyway, I wanted nothing of that.
I finish cleaning up the dishes and headed outside. It was time to patrol the area.
I walk around the neighborhood, checking the makeshift defenses that I've put up over the last few days.
The neighborhood itself is a gated community so it has sturdy metal fences already, but it has gaps in between that allowed people from outside to look inside. Alpha told me if I was anxious then I should just put up another barrier over, and that's exactly what I did. The makeshift fence are exactly what it's name suggest - makeshift. It's made from various pieces of wood, furniture, tires and anything I could get my hand on. It's not exactly the best but looking at it gives me sense of ease, especially because it blocks vision, I like my privacy, okay? I would upgrade it in the future but now it should be enough.
I walked from one corner to another checking the fence for any crack or crevice, or any sign of infiltration.
" Looks like everything is clear."
No signs of break-in, that's good I wouldn't want to wake up to zombie eating my face off.
Now on to the next task.
" How's the weather looking today, Alpha?"
" Perfect. The car is ready for you sir." A voice rung out from the earpiece on my right ear.
" Ok. What's on the list today?"
" I was thinking of securing more ammunitions and additional firepower. We should head over the south east military checkpoint."
"Copy that"
Since the last one got destroyed by that giant brute. I've managed to secure another military truck and heavily customized it. I wielded metal plates over for more armor, installed signal boosters and even a machine gun turret with shielding. I made sure it was a vehicle suited for the apocalypse. As long as I have this baby on my side, no stinking rotting corpse can hope to beat me! Muhahahaha.
Anyways, it most notable point wasn't it badass rotating gun turret or the near - indestructible armor plating blessed by the gods ( I've might have exaggerated that part a bit - teehee), but it's array of signal boosters. Why you ask? In modern warfare, information is the most important asset, if you can see the enemies first you can send them to meet their maker without them even laying eyes on you. This signal booster arrays serve that purpose, or more precisely, it's used to boost the range on my army of drones! (insert evil laughter)
Ok maybe not an entire army but I got just enough. A few days ago, I looted this tech store that got some civilian grade drones in storage. Normally civilian models only have an effective range of around 2km, but in the same store I also found several signal boosters too, with those in hand I could reliably increase the range to at least 3,5km. An idea immediately came to me, I would have these drones as my eyes on the sky, they would go ahead and scout out areas of interests, locate potential threats - zombie or survivors then warn me, this will allow me to effectively map out the city. In fact these drones are also connect to Alpha too, she could use the scouting info from the drones and formulate a plan for me. I've pretty much got the step down to a T.
Man... I gotta say I feel sorry for the other survivors, while they are out there risking their life fighting zombies close quarter and walking on foot, I'm out here chilling in my mobile fortress with a military grade AI. I'm quite literally playing on easy mode. Sucks to be you, huh.
After a while of driving, I managed to make my way through the city gates and navigate through the ruined streets to reach the checkpoint. But man...this city sure look depressing, lifeless gray streets with no signs of people as well abandoned cars and giant craters from repeating bombings attempts from the military. Empty shops and restaurants that was once bustling with activities, giant tall buildings that sit still and silent like giant monoliths or grave stones. The sky too.. feels like it's weeping with sorrow, just before I set out there were still golden rays of sunlight but now it is filled with dark clouds. No more traces of the city that was once hailed as the center of technology in Japan, now all that's left is just a cold dead city.
During the day, the dead often goes into hiding because they don't like the heat of the sun, instead they come out at night when it's cooler. But today the sun is blocked by clouds so they could come out early , I need to hurry.
" Is the coast clear?"
" It's quiet, strangely quiet. Be on guard"
I stopped the truck right in front of the overturned fence, just far enough to turn around and escape if things go bad but also in range of the machine gun. It seem like the military got overrun here, the zombies managed to break through the fences. The ground is soaked with dry blood and there's half eaten corpses here and there still dressed in military gear - their face swollen, with flies swirling all around. Nasty work.
"No signs of any undead, it seems they left behind their feast in a hurry to hide from the sun. The truck that's parked in the corner there have some ammo but not much, and in terms of weapon - nothing but what on the corpses. It looks like this area was set up in a hurry and they didn't intend to hold out for long."
" You should grab to crates then Master."
" Already on it. What about the weapons? "
" What else? Grab them too."
" But I already got one that's identical, besides it's caked with zombie blood too. Really don't want to use a gun with infected blood on it."
" You should have a spare in case one breaks down. Besides, if you leave it here another survivor could find it and you know what happens then right?"
" Alright point taken."
I loaded the ammo crates and the two rifles pilfered off the corpses on the cart that's towed behind my truck. The truck itself have very little storage space - just a small trunk and a row of backseat for extra storage, normally that would be enough for short trip to the store. But Alpha is such a hoarder that she insist I get an extra cart to tow behind for more storage. That AI sure is greedy, she operates under the mentality " if i can't get it, no one can't".
