Chapter 9 - Treasure in a Crystal Tune (1)

Both of them started arguing, and within seconds they were suddenly allies, ready to face the crystal mage. (Can't remember his name).

A bunch of crystal clones began emerging from the ground. One of them went straight for the mages in Yuno's group (couldn't recall their names either, something like "New Dawn"), but Luck shattered it with a single kick.

While they got ready for the fight, I started deciding what music I was going to play. I felt more comfortable than in the last dream; I could even feel my hands vibrating with excitement. It's a little sad I'm not with the Fairy Tail mages, but maybe I'll get to visit many magical places to help out.

Something exciting… maybe one of their openings… "But… I only know Black Catcher, and I need a piano… and to know how to play piano." (Note to self: take piano lessons.)

Okay, let's think.

Through the Fire and Flames? …Yeah, no. I'm not at that level yet. Maybe I should dust off Guitar Hero and train a little.

Oh!, what about Knights of Cydonia from the same game? They're magic knights, right? Feels fitting.

Or I could try something elemental, but wind didn't really help, so no Yuno Power-up, so that's out. Maybe something wild and electrifying like "Misirlou" for Noelle… Actually, no, she's a total wild card.

Alright then, Knights of Cydonia it is.

The crystal clones were attacking everyone. I hung back, far enough to avoid getting smacked around, but close enough to keep my eyes on the action. Asta sliced a massive sword in half with his own… which, let's be honest, was also massive. "heh! overcompensating?"

No, Ren. Focus.

I gripped my guitar and struck the first chords.

"This one's for the magic knights of the Clover Kingdom, fighting to bring honor to their name! I give you, Knights of Cydonia!"

The sound washed over the battlefield, the rhythm pushing faster and faster. With every strum, magic pulsed out of me.

As I hit the faster section, the mages' energy seemed to spike, everyone except Asta. My magic couldn't reach him, but his strength didn't falter for a second. He drove his sword into the crystal mage's gut, sending him flying.

Yuno's wind magic turned sharper, cutting through clones like butter.

Noelle stood guarding the healing mage, but her water spells burst from her wand like they had a mind of their own, wild, yet cutting down clones with no problem.

The other mage… was just standing there, muttering nonsense.

The crystal mage rose again, his shards swirling around him, merging into the hulking form of a golem.

I grinned.

♪ And how can we win, when fools can be kings? Don't waste your time, or time will waste you… ♪

Asta glanced my way, mouthed something I couldn't catch, then shouted at full volume, "THAT'S RIGHT, I'M GONNA BE THE WIZARD KING!"

Before the golem could even take a step, Asta charged, and for the first time my magic actually reached him. His muscles seemed to shine, veins standing out like veins on top of veins (I swear I saw that from where I was).

One swing, just one, and the golem shattered. The crystal mage hit the ground hard, instantly immobilized. The clones all crumbled away in sync with the start of the chorus.

When the last chord faded, I slung the guitar over my shoulder and strolled toward the others.

The Black Bull mages grinned at me, while the other mages went on guard.

I glanced at the mage who hadn't moved a muscle and said, "I don't know how I got here, but for now, let's just say I'm on your side. My name is…"

A pink-haired guy's smirk flashed in my mind.

"Heh… my name is Tempo."

The Black Bull mages exchanged glances, a mix of curiosity and amusement flashing in their eyes. "Tempo, huh?" Luck said, stepping forward with a cocky grin. "Never heard that name around here. You new?, Want to fight?"

Klaus adjusted his glasses, eyeing me like I was a stray cat that wandered into the palace. "Tempo? Never heard of you. And your attire is… unusual."

"Coming from a guy wearing shoulder armor shaped like a bookcase," I replied.

Luck's grin widened. "I like him already. So a fight?"

I shrugged, tuning the strings absentmindedly. "Sort of. More like 'temporarily here. Also please no, I don't have fighting power, only support magic.'"

Noelle crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "Wait, you're just going to trust some random guy who popped out of nowhere?, You're not from this kingdom, are you?"

Asta stepped forward, sword in hand but not hostile. "If he says he's on our side, we'll find out soon enough. Besides..." he glanced at me with that reckless smile of his, "I've got a feeling about him."

"Uh, yeah. Something like that," I replied, trying to sound casual. "Got dropped into the middle of your little magic party."

Luck chuckled, cracking his knuckles. "Well, you're in the right place if you want some action."

Asta nodded fiercely. "You fight alongside us, Tempo, you're one of us."

I smiled, "Alright, guess I'm a magic knight now."

Klaus hastily adjusted his glasses "No, You're not!, you need to do the exam, and be recognized by..." I tuned him down, just a rambling dude.

Yuno, calm and focused, gave me a small nod. "Just don't slow us down."

Mimosa tilted her head politely. "Um… do you use magic?"

I patted my guitar. "Something like that, as I said, I'm support, my music can give boosts, but I'm still figuring out which boosts I can give."

Luck's eyes lit up like a kid seeing candy. "Boosts? Can you make me faster? Stronger? Both?! Please say Both!"

I raised a brow. "Depends. Do you want fast like lightning, or fast like I skipped the last three choruses of a song?"

Luck smiled "I'll take that you said both, I can't wait to come back and fight the captain"

Klaus cleared his throat, stepping past us toward the collapsed mage. "Enough chatter. I'll restrain him with my Steel Creation Magic."

Metal bands formed in the air, twisting and locking around his arms and legs with a sharp clang.

I tilted my head. "Not bad. Very... Artistic."

Klaus shot me a look. "This isn't art, it's protocol."

"Could be both," I muttered.

Mimosa knelt nearby, trying to heal Yuno's shoulder but her magic hasn't recovered she frowned.

While Luck just stared at the mage from diamond kingdom like he was waiting for him to wake up so the fun could start again.

Asta started yelling, "Ahhh, my clothes! They're all dirty!"

Luck grinned. "When we get back to the guild, ask Vanessa to help you clean them."

Mimosa handed out medicine to everyone since she didn't have enough magic yet to heal them. Asta began chewing the herbs and talking with his mouth full. "Are those restraints really enough?"

Klaus took offense and barked, "Of course they're enough! My magic isn't that fragile!"

I couldn't remember much from the anime or manga in this arc. I mostly rewatched the later seasons and the whole demon plot. If I was remembering right, this mage eventually turned good, but I also didn't think he went down this easily.

"Hey… maybe you should reinforce it, just in case. I'm not saying it's weak, but honestly, we don't know if he has some hidden magic artifact."
