Chapter 6 - Ch.6: The Boardroom

The boardroom at Apex Raven Global was silent.

A long black table stretched across the center of the room, surrounded by leather chairs occupied by lawyers, financial advisers, executives, and senior members of both companies.

At one end sat Raven.

Her black mask covered her face, the silver raven insignia visible against the dark material.

Jane sat beside her, a tablet open in front of her.

Across the table sat Eleanor Vance with Sebastian and several members of her executive and legal team.

Eleanor remained calm.

She had expected Raven to be intimidating.

She hadn't expected the entire room to feel like it belonged to her.

Even the lawyers seemed careful about every word they spoke.

Raven's presence alone was enough to make the room quiet.

One of Eleanor's executives stood.

"Good morning, everyone."

He connected his laptop to the large screen behind him.

The first slide appeared.

VANCE CAPITAL HOLDINGS & APEX RAVEN GLOBAL

PROPOSED STRATEGIC EXPANSION

Eleanor leaned back.

Raven's eyes remained on the screen.

The presentation began.

"Our proposal focuses on a joint expansion into three major markets, beginning with private infrastructure investment and commercial development."

The next slide appeared.

Graphs and financial projections filled the screen.

The executive continued.

"Vance Capital Holdings has already secured preliminary opportunities in these markets. With Apex Raven Global's investment capacity and international network, we estimate that the partnership could generate substantial returns within the first three years."

One of Raven's lawyers leaned toward her.

"Those projections are optimistic."

Eleanor's executive heard him.

"With respect, they're conservative."

The lawyer raised an eyebrow.

"Based on what?"

The executive changed the slide.

"Existing contracts, projected market growth, and the current value of the assets we've identified."

The room became quiet again.

Raven looked at the screen.

Then at Eleanor.

"Continue."

The executive nodded.

"Yes, Ms. Raven."

The presentation continued for another fifteen minutes.

Eleanor remained silent throughout.

She didn't need to speak.

She trusted her team.

Eventually, the final slide appeared.

PROJECTED FIVE-YEAR RETURN

The executive turned toward Eleanor.

"That concludes the proposal."

He returned to his seat.

Raven's legal adviser immediately spoke.

"We have several concerns regarding liability."

Eleanor nodded.

"I expected that."

The lawyer opened a folder.

"Vance Capital Holdings would retain operational control over its existing assets, while Apex Raven Global would provide significant capital."

"Correct."

"That creates an imbalance."

Eleanor looked toward one of her lawyers.

Before she could speak, the lawyer beside her responded.

"The agreement includes proportional voting rights and shared oversight."

Raven's lawyer shook his head.

"Not sufficient."

The discussion quickly became more intense.

Numbers were questioned.

Clauses were examined.

Responsibilities were debated.

Eleanor listened quietly.

So did Raven.

Neither woman interrupted.

Until one of the lawyers made a suggestion Eleanor clearly didn't like.

"That would give Apex Raven Global authority over several areas of our operations."

Eleanor finally spoke.

"No."

The room fell silent.

The lawyer turned toward her.

"Ms. Vance—"

"No."

Her voice remained calm.

"You're asking Vance Capital Holdings to surrender operational control of assets we've spent years developing."

Raven looked at her.

The dominant Omega's tone never changed.

"We're here to create a partnership, not acquire one."

One of Raven's advisers exchanged a glance with Jane.

Raven remained silent for several seconds.

Then she spoke.

"She has a point."

Everyone looked at her.

Raven turned toward her legal team.

"Revise the clause."

Her lawyer hesitated.

"Ms. Raven—"

"I said revise it."

"Yes, ma'am."

Eleanor studied Raven.

That wasn't what she expected.

She had expected the mysterious CEO to be difficult.

She hadn't expected her to recognize a reasonable argument.

Raven looked toward Eleanor's team.

"Continue."

The presentation moved into the financial structure.

Another member of Eleanor's team stood and explained the investment model.

Numbers appeared on the screen.

Projected returns.

Risk assessments.

Market analysis.

Everything had been prepared carefully.

Raven listened without saying a word.

Jane occasionally whispered information into her ear.

Raven nodded each time.

After nearly an hour, the presentation finally ended.

The room became quiet.

Raven closed the folder in front of her.

"I've heard enough."

Eleanor waited.

Raven looked toward her legal team.

"Review the revised agreement."

The lawyers nodded.

Then Raven looked at Eleanor.

"Your proposal is strong."

Eleanor gave a small smile.

"Thank you."

"That doesn't mean we have a deal."

"I know."

Raven leaned back.

"But we're close."

Eleanor nodded.

"That's enough for today."

For a moment, their eyes met.

Neither looked away.

Raven noticed Eleanor's calm aura again.

A dominant Omega.

Unusual.

Eleanor noticed something else.

Behind the mask, Raven's eyes were colder than she'd expected.

But there was something else there too.

Something she couldn't identify.

Jane stood.

"We'll arrange another meeting once the legal teams have reviewed the changes."

Eleanor nodded.

"Of course."

She gathered her documents.

The lawyers began discussing the next steps.

Raven remained seated.

Eleanor stood.

Before leaving, she turned toward Raven.

"Ms. Raven."

Raven looked at her.

"Yes?"

"I look forward to our next meeting."

Raven's eyes remained on her.

"So do I."

Eleanor left the boardroom with her team.

The doors closed behind her.

Jane looked at Raven.

"You were unusually quiet."

Raven looked toward the closed doors.

"She came prepared."

Jane smiled.

"That's what you noticed?"

Raven turned toward her.

"What else should I notice?"

Jane raised both hands.

"Nothing, ma'am."

Raven looked back at the documents.

But for some reason, her attention wasn't completely on the proposal anymore.

Across the hallway, Eleanor was having a similar thought.

There was something about Raven.

Something she couldn't quite understand.

And neither woman knew that this was only the beginning
