Chapter 380 - Chapter 375: A Valley Meant for Two

Chapter 375: A Valley Meant for Two

The valley almost felt hidden from the rest of the world.

Tall mountains stood on every side like patient old guardians, their rocky faces disappearing into thick blankets of pale gray cloud. The peaks themselves couldn't even be seen anymore. They had vanished somewhere above the fog, leaving only the feeling that something enormous watched over the land below. Wisps of mist drifted lazily between the trees, winding through the forest the same way rivers wound through stone, never moving quickly, never seeming to be in any hurry to reach anywhere.

Malik had the thought of pulling out his phone and taking a picture, and maybe he would, but later his attention was elsewhere, on the tall, fog-covered mountains and the trees covering them and their vast base.

It was peaceful.

with a nice natural type of low and deep, Quiet.

The sort of place people stumbled across only once in a lifetime.

Somewhere deeper among the hills, hidden behind trees and winding paths, Emina's traveling caravan had made camp. They weren't close enough to interrupt the afternoon, but they weren't so far away that she was ever truly alone. Her grandfather had insisted on that. Malik had smiled and agreed immediately.

Truthfully, he thought the old man had made a fair compromise.

Close enough to shout.

Far enough to give them privacy.

That sounded about right.

Their own little tent sat beneath the shade of several old trees, the canvas sides open enough to let the cool breeze wander through. A thick woven rug covered the ground beneath them, layered with comfortable blankets and cushions. Between them rested a simple wooden tray filled with food Malik had spent the better part of the morning making.

Nothing too special, just a few simple things,

Fresh bread.

Roasted vegetables.

Fruit.

Light soup.

Small pastries.

Tea.

Nothing extravagant, but everything was nice, the setup simple but good.

Just food made carefully by someone who genuinely enjoyed feeding people.

Malik had barely touched any of it.

Instead...

He watched Emina.

She noticed almost immediately.

"You've been staring at me for..." she paused, pretending to count while looking toward the ceiling of the tent. "...far too long."

Malik blinked innocently.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

She laughed softly.

"You're doing it right now."

"I am."

"You admitted it."

"I sure did."

Her cheeks warmed just a little.

"...You're impossible."

"So I've been told."

She shook her head, smiling despite herself before taking another bite of bread.

Malik rested one elbow on his knee, simply watching her enjoy the meal.

To him...

That was half the reward.

People always thanked him for cooking.

Very few understood that seeing someone genuinely enjoy what he'd made was the part he loved most.

Emina finally sighed.

"You really aren't going to eat much, are you?"

"I already am."

She looked around. "...Where?"

"My eyes are eating."

She blinked. "...What?"

"I'm watching somebody enjoy lunch."

She stared at him for nearly three seconds before laughing again. "That is the most ridiculous thing you've said today."

"It isn't even noon."

"You somehow made that worse."

"I'm gifted."

"You certainly think you are."

He grinned.

She rolled her eyes, though there wasn't any annoyance behind it. There rarely was. After another few quiet bites, Emina's smile softened. Her fingers wrapped around the warm cup of tea as her thoughts drifted elsewhere.

"You know..."

Malik immediately noticed. Her voice had changed.

Just enough. "What?"

She looked toward the opening of the tent, where the distant trees gently swayed.

"My grandfather..." Malik stayed quiet. He had learned long ago that some conversations needed room before they found their feet. Emina smiled. A small smile. Happy... But carrying something else underneath it.

"You've made him happier than I've seen him in years." Malik listened.

"He still talks about everything that happened." She said, her voice growling low for a while before starting up again, "The Leaf . . . . . The Sand . . . . .and You, The way everyone helped us." She lowered her eyes to her cup.

"He tells the children that people can still surprise you."

Malik's own smile became quieter. "I'm glad."

"So am I." She nodded. "Sometimes I catch him smiling when he thinks nobody is looking." Her expression shifted again. The smile stayed. But it became awkward. Almost embarrassed. "You know..." Malik tilted his head.

"He complains every single time you ask me to go somewhere."

"I noticed."

"He says you're distracting me."

Malik nodded at that. "I probably am."

"He says young men should learn patience."

"He's not wrong."

"He says if you take me away one more time he'll tie you to a wagon."

Malik laughed. "I believe him."

"I do too." She laughed with him before letting out a small sigh.

"...He's just..." She searched for the words. "...a lot." There it was. The face she'd made. All of those emotions at the same time, fighting for space. Happy. Embarrassed. A little tired. Filled with affection anyway.

"He still sees me as his little granddaughter." She looked down at herself. "I'm nearly thirty."

"I know."

"He still worries."

"I know."

"He still checks if I've eaten."

"I know."

"He still asks where I'm going."

"I know."

She looked at him. "You aren't helping."

"I wasn't trying to." That made her laugh again. Malik couldn't help smiling.

"I think..." he said softly, "...he loves you so much that nobody will ever seem good enough."

Emina looked toward the distant caravan. "...Probably." She smiled to herself.

"...It's nice."

"It is."

"...Even if it's exhausting."

"It can be both."

She nodded slowly.

"...Yeah."

"It can." Silence settled comfortably again. Emina returned to her meal.

Malik returned to watching her. After another bite she slowly lowered her chopsticks. "...Could you..."

"Hm?"

"...look somewhere else?"

He blinked. "What?"

"It's embarrassing."

"What is?"

"You."

Malik made a face, "You? . . . . .Existing?"

"No, You watching me eat." She happily corrected him. He looked genuinely confused. "But you're adorable."

Her entire face turned pink. "Malik..."

"What?"

"You keep smiling."

"I do."

"And you're staring."

"I am."

"...Please stop."

He shrugged.

"Don't mind if I do."

His eyes drifted downward for much longer than only a moment before returning to her face, and then dropping again to her chest. Malik had to admit, her cup size was for sure at least some Good-sized DDs but maybe bigger, and that thought was always enough to make him smile. And it was enough.

Emina followed his gaze. The realization hit immediately. Her eyes widened. She took a sip of tea. Unfortunately... She inhaled at exactly the wrong moment. She immediately began coughing.

Malik sat upright with a smile, "You alright?"

She waved frantically. "I'm fine..." More coughing. "...I'm fine."

A few moments later she finally caught her breath. Her cheeks had become an impressive shade of red. She reached forward with both hands. Very gently. Very deliberately. She placed them against Malik's cheeks.

Then she physically tilted his head upward until their eyes met again.

"There." She nodded once. "That's better."

Malik smiled. "I was simply appreciating the scenery."

She narrowed her eyes. "The scenery has a face."

"It does."

"And I'd prefer you keep looking at it."

He chuckled. "I can do that."

She continued holding his face another second before smiling shyly.

"I..." She hesitated. "...I'm flattered." She really was. She'd noticed him looking before. She wasn't blind. She knew he found her beautiful. Part of her still couldn't quite understand why.

"But..." Her thumbs lightly brushed his cheeks. "...none of that just yet."

There wasn't fear in her voice. Or rejection. Only patience. Only caution.

Only someone wanting something to grow at its own pace instead of rushing toward it.

Malik's expression softened immediately. There wasn't even the smallest hint of disappointment. Instead, he just nodded once. "Your wish is my command."

He gently lifted one of her hands. Pressed a soft kiss against her knuckles. Then lowered it carefully again. "I wanted to ask you something."

Her heart immediately beat a little faster, "You already know."

"I do." Malik said, his face going still but a smile still made its way to it, "But I still wanted to ask properly."

She waited. Malik looked at her with the same gentle seriousness he'd shown very few people, "Emina. I love you. I don't think I've been subtle about that."

She laughed quietly. "No. . . .You haven't."

"I'd like you to become one of my wives someday." He didn't rush into the next words. "There isn't a deadline, and there isn't any pressure, not now, or hopefully ever." He looked her deep in her eyes next, "I don't expect you to leave your people, and I don't expect you to ever stop traveling. I know who you are, and I know very well that your home moves, and I know your heart belongs with your caravan as much as it belongs anywhere."

He smiled. "I don't want to take that away." His voice became softer. "But...My love is greedy."

She blinked.

He laughed at himself. "It sounds terrible when I say it out loud. But I do need to say it, to be honest, and it sounds honest because it is honest."

"I suppose it does."

He nodded, "I miss you when you're gone, and I think about you constantly. I want more days like this. More conversations. More meals. More ordinary afternoons. I crave being part of your life. And someday... I'd like to call you my wife."

He looked toward the distant hills. "I'll earn your grandfather's blessing." His smile returned in full, "...Eventually. I have absolutely no idea how. But I'll figure it out."

Emina stared at him quietly. No laughter. No teasing.

Just thought. A long one.

When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above the breeze outside the tent. "I've thought about it."

His eyes widened just slightly. "I thought you might have."

"I have." She smiled. "I think about you more than I probably should." She looked away, embarrassed by her own honesty. "I miss you too." Her fingers found his again. "...You're safe....Kind....You make people feel seen. You make me feel seen."

She swallowed. "I don't know exactly what the future looks like. I don't know where my caravan will be six months from now. I don't know what tomorrow brings. But..."

She squeezed his hand. "I would like there to be a place for you in it."

Malik didn't interrupt. He simply listened.

"If..." she continued, "...if you're really willing to let me stay with my people, If you're really willing to share me with the road and If you truly understand that I will always come back to this caravan..." She smiled."...then...I'd like to keep walking toward that future with you."

Malik's eyes softened.

"So..." she added shyly, "...my answer is yes....Just...let's keep taking our time."

Before Malik could answer, a booming voice echoed across the valley.

"BOY!"

Both of them looked toward the trees. Even from this distance...Kahiko had impressive lungs.

"I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME!"

Emina sighed so deeply she almost slumped over, "There he is."

"I'M COUNTING! YOU'VE GOT ABOUT TWO HOURS! AND DON'T GET ANY IDEAS!"

Malik smiled, "I don't know. I think he likes me."

Emina looked at him, "...You are unbelievably optimistic."

"I have to be."

She laughed, shaking her head.

"My grandfather has been threatening you for months."

"And yet he keeps letting me visit," Malik said, his eyes glowing just a little, "...That's because I wear him down."

"No." She smiled knowingly. "...It's because he sees how happy I am."

Malik looked at her for a long moment. "I like that answer."

"So do I."

He reached forward slowly.

"May I kiss you?"

She smiled before she even answered.

"You remembered to ask."

"I always will."

She nodded, "You may."

Malik leaned forward carefully, giving her every chance to change her mind.

She didn't. Their lips met in a slow, gentle kiss that carried none of the rush of infatuation and all of the comfort of two people choosing each other one quiet moment at a time.

Outside, the valley remained wrapped in drifting fog.

Far away, her grandfather muttered something suspiciously loud about "young people."

Inside the little tent, neither of them paid him much attention.

They still had plenty of time together.

And Malik intended to make every single minute count.

The kiss deepened, slow and sweet at first, but Emina had other plans.

A mischievous glint flickered in her big brown eyes as she took Malik's face in her hands, her fingers warm against his skin. She leaned in, pulling him closer, her lips parting as she deepened the kiss with a quiet determination.

Malik responded instantly, his hands sliding up to cradle her face, his thumbs brushing over her cheekbones as he kissed her back with equal fervor.

Emina didn't stop there.

With a gentle but firm push, she guided him down onto the thick rugs and cushions beneath them, her body sinking into the soft layers as she pulled him on top of her. Malik followed willingly, his weight settling over her, his hands finding her waist, his fingers digging into the soft fabric of her dress. Emina's hands slid down to his, guiding one of them to the full, heavy swell of her breast. Malik didn't need to be told twice. His fingers curled around the generous weight of it, the fabric of her dress doing little to hide the warmth, the softness, the way her body responded to his touch.

Emina's breath melted as his hand explored her, his thumb brushing over her nipple through the fabric, the way it tightened beneath his touch. She arched slightly into him, her body pressing against his, her lips never leaving his as they kissed, slow and deep, their breaths mingling between them.

After a long, delicious stretch of time, Malik finally pulled back just enough to speak, his voice rough with desire but still gentle. "How far do you want to go?" he murmured, his golden-pink eyes searching hers.

Emina's lips curled into the faintest hint of a wicked smile, her brown eyes dark with mischief. "Deep into second base," she whispered, her voice a low, breathy tease.

Malik's grin was slow, triumphant. "Your wish is my command," he murmured, his hand already sliding lower, his fingers tracing the curve of her waist, the flare of her hip, the way her body trembled beneath his touch.

Emina's breath came faster as his hand found the hem of her dress, his fingers slipping beneath the fabric, tracing the soft, warm skin of her thigh.

She shifted slightly, her legs parting just enough to let him explore further, her body yielding to his touch. Malik's fingers slid higher, his thumb brushing against the damp, warm heat of her through the thin fabric of her underwear. Emina's body arched into his touch, her hands gripping his shoulders, her nails digging into his skin as he teased her, as he worshipped her.

His lips found her neck, his tongue dragging along the sensitive skin, the way her breath hitched as he tasted her, the way her body arched into his touch. His hand slid higher, his fingers tracing the curve of her waist, the way her muscles tensed beneath his touch. He could feel the heat of her, the way her body trembled with need, with anticipation.

Emina's hands found his, guiding them back to her breasts, her touch firm but gentle.

Malik's fingers curled around the heavy weight of them, the way they filled his palms, the way her breath came in ragged gasps as he squeezed, as he explored.

His thumbs brushed over her nipples, the way they tightened beneath his touch, the way her body responded to him, the way her back arched slightly, pressing her chest more firmly into his hands.

"You're perfect," Malik murmured against her skin, his voice rough with admiration, with restraint.

His lips found hers again, his kiss slow and deep, his hands still exploring her body, the way her skin reacted beneath his fingers.

Emina's breath came in ragged gasps, her body trembling with the effort of holding still, of letting him take what he wanted, what she wanted. Malik's fingers traced the lace at the waistband of her underwear, his touch light but knowing, his eyes never leaving hers as he hooked his thumbs into the fabric, dragging it down her thighs in one slow, deliberate motion.

Emina lifted her hips just enough to let him pull the fabric free, her body bare beneath him, the sunlight filtering through the trees above them and into the tent, past its canvas, casting patterns of light and shadow across her skin.

Malik's breath grew hot as he took in the sight of her, his hands working her top open for him, the way her breasts rose and fell with each breath, the way her nipples were dark and tight, the way her body trembled with need.

His hands slid up to cup her breasts, his thumbs brushing over her nipples, the way her breath hitched as he teased her, the way her body arched into his touch.

Emina's hands found his hair, her fingers tangling in the dark curls, her grip tightening as his lips trailed lower, his tongue dragging along the sensitive skin of her collarbone; she melted under his hands.

Malik's fingers slid between her thighs, his touch light but knowing, his eyes never leaving hers as he found the damp, warm heat of her, the way her body responded to his touch, the way her hips bucked up, seeking more, needing more.

"You're mine," Malik growled, his voice dark with satisfaction, with possession. His lips found hers again, his kiss hungry, desperate, his hands still exploring her body; she shivered at his contact.

Emina's breath was ragged, her body trembling as she struggled to remain still, allowing him to take what he desired and what she desired. Malik's fingers traced slow, deliberate circles, the way her breath hitched as he teased her, the way her body trembled with pleasure, with surrender.

The valley around them seemed to fade away, the world narrowing to the two of them, lost in each other's arms, their breaths mingling, their bodies moving together in a dance as old as time itself.

The fog still drifted lazily between the trees, the mountains still stood tall and silent around them, but neither of them noticed. There was only this and the warmth of their bodies, the softness of the rugs beneath them, the way their hearts beat in time with one another.

And for now, that was enough.
