Chapter 59 - A Promise Never Broken

The afternoon sun bathed Hart Manor in a warm golden glow as tea came to an end.

Eleanor Hart walked Celina to the front entrance.

"I've truly enjoyed today," Celina said warmly.

Eleanor smiled.

"So have we."

"I hope this won't be your last visit."

Celina laughed softly.

"I don't think it will."

Sophia Barrett stepped forward.

"It was lovely spending time with you again."

"Thank you for inviting me."

Sophia gently squeezed her hand.

"Take care of yourself."

"I will."

She hesitated before adding with a knowing smile,

"And... take good care of Aaron."

A blush instantly spread across Celina's cheeks.

"I'll try."

Sophia chuckled.

"I know you will."

As the car pulled away from Hart Manor...

Both women remained standing at the entrance.

Watching until it disappeared beyond the gates.

For several moments...

Neither of them spoke.

Finally...

Sophia broke the silence.

"She has Isabella's smile."

Eleanor nodded slowly.

"And her heart."

Sophia lowered her eyes.

"I wanted to tell her everything today."

"So did I."

"But we can't."

Eleanor looked toward the quiet road.

"Not while someone is still searching for her."

Sophia sighed.

"I only pray we aren't too late."

An hour later...

Celina stepped into the familiar warmth of the Bakers' home.

"I'm home!"

Mr. Bakers looked up from the chair near the window.

His face brightened.

"Welcome home."

"How was your afternoon?"

Celina placed her handbag on the table and smiled.

"It was wonderful."

Mr. Bakers chuckled.

"I can tell."

"You've been smiling since you walked through the door."

She laughed.

"Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Barrett were both there."

"They made me feel so comfortable."

"They're remarkable women."

Mr. Bakers nodded quietly.

"I'm glad."

Celina sat beside him.

"We talked about so many things."

"The hospital."

"Cooking."

"Life."

She paused thoughtfully.

"Then..."

"They asked me about my mother."

Mr. Bakers' smile disappeared for the briefest moment.

"So..."

"What did you tell them?"

"Only what you've always told me."

"That she died when I was very little."

"And that she loved me."

Mr. Bakers forced a gentle smile.

"That's true."

Celina rested her head lightly against his shoulder.

"I wish I could remember her."

"I don't even know what her voice sounded like."

Mr. Bakers felt a sharp ache in his chest.

He gently placed a hand over hers.

"Some people..."

"Never truly leave us."

"They live on..."

"In the people they loved."

Celina smiled.

"I'd like to believe that."

She stood.

"I'll go start dinner."

As she disappeared into the kitchen...

Mr. Bakers remained where he was.

His eyes fixed on nothing.

The questions...

Had finally begun.

That night...

The house had fallen silent.

Mr. Bakers quietly entered his bedroom.

From the back of an old wardrobe...

He removed a small wooden box.

His hands trembled as he unlocked it.

Inside...

Lay a faded photograph.

A tiny silver bracelet.

Several old letters tied together with a blue ribbon.

And a newspaper clipping with a burned corner.

He picked up the photograph.

A beautiful young woman smiled brightly at the camera.

Isabella Monroe.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I kept my promise..."

He whispered.

"I raised her as my own."

His thoughts drifted back twenty-five years.

Smoke.

Flames.

A terrified young mother holding a newborn baby.

Tears streaming down her face.

She had placed the tiny child into his arms.

"Please..."

"If anything happens to me..."

"Don't let them find her."

He had looked into her frightened eyes and answered without hesitation.

"From today..."

"She's my daughter."

A tear rolled down his cheek.

"I gave you my word, Isabella."

"And I'll keep it..."

"For as long as I live."

Just then...

A sudden gust of wind rattled the bedroom window.

Mr. Bakers slowly looked outside.

Across the street...

A black car sat beneath the shadow of a large tree.

Its headlights were off.

The windows were too dark to see inside.

His heart skipped a beat.

Was someone watching...

Or was it only his imagination?

The curtain fell back into place.

But the uneasy feeling remained.

Far across the city...

Inside the Monroe Estate...

A woman stood before a portrait hanging above the fireplace.

Her fingers slowly traced Isabella Monroe's smiling face.

Then...

She whispered coldly,

"You escaped me once..."

"I won't make that mistake again."

She turned toward the window.

A slow smile crossed her lips.

"The game has finally begun."
