Chapter 48 - Shadows Begin to Move

Tuesday Morning...

Steel Medical Center awakened to another busy day.

Doctors hurried through the corridors.

Nurses prepared for morning rounds.

The pediatric ward echoed with children's laughter.

For Celina...

Life had returned to its familiar rhythm.

She greeted everyone with her usual smile, completely unaware that invisible eyes had begun following her every move.

Aaron stepped out of the elevator with Ethan beside him.

"Your first meeting begins at nine, sir."

"The foundation directors arrive at ten."

"And the hospital board requested your approval for the new children's library."

Aaron nodded.

"Move the foundation meeting to this afternoon."

Ethan blinked.

"The directors have already arrived."

"They can wait."

Without another word, Aaron walked toward the pediatric wing.

Ethan watched him disappear before sighing with amusement.

"Another inspection..."

He muttered to himself.

"...that somehow always ends in Pediatrics."

Inside the activity room...

Daniel and several children sat around Celina as she taught them how to decorate cupcakes.

Small bowls of colorful icing covered the table.

"This one looks funny!"

A little girl giggled as her cupcake leaned sideways.

Celina laughed.

"Sometimes the funniest ones taste the best."

Just then...

Aaron appeared at the doorway.

He quietly watched the scene before speaking.

"It seems I'm interrupting."

The children looked up together.

"Mr. Steel!"

Daniel waved excitedly.

"Come help us!"

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

"I've never decorated a cupcake before."

"Then today is your first lesson!"

The room burst into laughter.

Celina smiled.

"I think that's a reasonable request."

Aaron loosened the sleeves of his white shirt before sitting beside Daniel.

"What do I do?"

Daniel handed him a piping bag.

"Don't squeeze too hard."

Aaron followed the instructions carefully.

The icing immediately exploded across the cupcake.

Everyone froze.

Then...

The children burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Even Emily, who had just walked in, covered her mouth to hide her smile.

Celina couldn't stop laughing.

"I'm sorry..."

She laughed again.

"I really am."

Aaron looked at his ruined cupcake.

Then...

For perhaps the first time in years...

He laughed at himself.

A genuine laugh.

One that reached his eyes.

Outside the room...

Several nurses stopped walking.

"Did you hear that?"

"Mr. Steel laughed."

"I've worked here for six years."

"I've never heard that before."

Later...

As the children proudly carried away their cupcakes...

Aaron and Celina remained behind to help clean the tables.

She glanced at his cupcake.

"I think yours deserves a special award."

He smiled.

"For what?"

"The bravest attempt."

He chuckled softly.

"I'll accept that."

Their eyes met.

Comfortable silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Simply...

Peaceful.

Across the street...

Victor Hayes sat inside the silver sedan.

Through a telephoto lens...

He photographed Aaron and Celina cleaning together.

No bodyguards.

No executives.

No formal distance.

Just two people talking naturally.

Victor lowered the camera.

"So..."

"It isn't one-sided."

His phone vibrated.

"The report?"

The familiar cold voice asked.

Victor answered quietly.

"Mr. Steel trusts her."

"More than anyone realizes."

"And the woman?"

"She's exactly as everyone describes."

"Kind."

"Honest."

"Innocent."

Another silence.

Then the voice became colder.

"Innocent people..."

"...are usually the easiest to hurt."

Victor's expression hardened.

"You intend to use her?"

"I intend to use Aaron."

The call ended.

Victor stared toward the hospital.

For the first time...

He almost felt sorry for Celina.

That evening...

Aaron stood in his office overlooking the city skyline.

He couldn't stop thinking about the afternoon.

The laughter.

The cupcakes.

Celina's smile.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Edward Steel entered carrying two cups of tea.

"I thought coffee had competition."

Aaron accepted the cup with a small smile.

Edward studied his grandson carefully.

"You've changed."

Aaron looked out the window.

"Have I?"

"You smile more."

"You leave work earlier."

"And somehow..."

"...the children's ward has become your favorite department."

Aaron laughed quietly.

"I suppose it has."

Edward walked beside him.

"Be careful."

Aaron looked at him.

"Of what?"

Edward's expression became thoughtful.

"When a man has something precious..."

"There will always be someone who wants to take it away."

Aaron frowned slightly.

"I don't understand."

Edward gently patted his shoulder.

"You will."

Outside...

Rain clouds slowly gathered above Rosewood.

Far away...

Victor Hayes opened a newly delivered file.

Across the front...

One name was written in bold letters.

ISABELLA MORETTI

His eyes narrowed.

"So..."

"Now we finally have a surname."

He opened the file.

Inside...

Was a faded newspaper clipping from twenty-five years ago.

The headline read:

"Young Woman Dies Following Mysterious Accident."

Victor's smile slowly disappeared.

"This wasn't an accident..."

He whispered.

"And someone made sure the truth stayed buried."

As thunder rolled across the sky...

The first crack appeared in a secret that had survived for twenty-five years.
