Chapter 202 - The Beginning of the End.

The digital clock on the bedside table flipped silently. 5:00 AM.

In the absolute darkness of the room, Hina's eyes were already open.

They had been open all night.

She hadn't moved an inch, her body acting as a living shield for the boy curled against her chest.

While the bunker hummed with the distant, mechanical sounds of a base preparing for war, Hina had remained in her own private eternity, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of Kai's shoulders.

For Kai, sleep had been a revelation. For the first time since the nightmare began, the screaming in his mind had gone silent.

The shadows of the men he had killed, the faces of his beloved parents, and the fear of the future had all been swallowed by the warmth of Hina's embrace.

He had slept with the heavy, dreamless peace of the dead, or perhaps, the peace of a weapon that has finally found its sheath.

During the night, Kai used to snuggle into her chest, like a child seeking comfort from a mother.

Hina leaned down, her lips brushing against his white hair. She inhaled the scent of him, a mixture of the aseptic soap and the faint, lingering metallic tang that had become her favorite perfume.

"Kai, dear," she whispered, her voice a soft caress that cut through the silence. "It's time."

Kai's eyelids fluttered. When they opened, there was no disorientation. No momentary confusion.

His eyes, now abysses of blue ice, were clear and sharp from the second they caught the dim grey light of the room.

He looked up at Hina, and for a heartbeat, a small, genuine but broken smile touched his lips—a reflection of the boy on the swing she had remembered.

"I slept," Kai said, his voice low and steady. "I didn't think I ever would again."

"I told you," Hina murmured, stroking his cheek. "In the dark, we are safe. But the sun is coming, my love. And we have work to do, for our happiness."

The sweetness of the moment was laced with a chilling pragmatism. They rose together, the bedsheets rustling in the quiet. There was a new synchronization in their movements, a silent understanding that didn't require words.

Hina dressed first. She stepped back into her tactical combat suit, the zippers hissing as she sealed herself back into her armor.

She transformed from the nurturing, possessive figure of the night into the lethal predator of the Kobayashi.

She checked her knives, her fingers moving with a blurred, expert speed, before holstering her pistol on her thigh.

Kai watched her, then wanted to dress himself too.

"I don't think I should go to war with civilian clothes, right?" He asked to Hina.

She chuckled, clearly curious to see her lover in a combat suit.

"You're right. That's why I grabbed some clothes for you." Hina said, opening the wardrobe.

There were several suits and clothes, but Kai chose the most minimal outfit.

He chose dark, durable civilian clothes that were there: a black hoodie, reinforced trousers, and combat boots.

As he laced his boots, he noticed his hands.

They were steady.

The skin on his knuckles was still red and raw, a reminder of his "awakening" in Corridor C-9, but there was no tremor.

He stood up, adjusting the weight of the tactical belt Hina handed him. He felt heavier, not with guilt, but with purpose. He was ready to fight.

"Ready?" Hina asked, her grey eyes locking onto his.

"Ready," Kai replied.

They walked through the bunker corridors in silence.

The atmosphere had shifted. The usual boredom of the guards had been replaced by a frantic, electric tension. Soldiers were moving in groups, checking equipment and shouting last-minute orders.

When they entered the Main Hall, the air was thick with the smell of gun oil and ozone. Hundreds of men were assembled, a sea of tactical gear and cold steel. At the far end of the hall, standing on a raised platform, was Rei.

He looked impeccable. His suit was crisp, his hair perfectly styled, and his eyes burned with the manic brilliance of a man who believed he was about to become a god.

To his left stood Hiromi, her expression as unreadable as ever, and to his right, Akira, leaning against her sniper rifle case with a look of bored indifference that masked her lethal focus.

As Hina and Kai approached the front of the crowd, the sea of soldiers parted. They didn't just move; they recoiled.

The aura radiating from the pair—Hina's obsessive ferocity and Kai's new, chilling void—was enough to make even seasoned killers hesitate.

Rei's gaze landed on them, and a slow, predatory grin spread across his face.

"The guests of honor have arrived," Rei announced, his voice amplified by the hall's acoustics. "And look at you, Kai. You finally look like someone who belongs in my world."

Kai didn't blink. He simply stared at Rei, his blue eyes absorbing the man's presence like a black hole absorbing light.

"Enough talk, Rei," Hina said, her voice cutting through the murmurs of the soldiers. "The plan. 100%. Now."

Rei chuckled, gesturing to a massive holographic map that shimmered into existence behind him.

It showed a high-density urban district—the heart of the city, where the Kobayashi headquarters and the main police station formed a tense triangle with the luxury hotel on top of the highest tower where Sabushi was staying.

Rei tapped the interface, and the holographic map of the city zoomed into a luxury hotel.

"We are sticking to the 'Bait' strategy," Rei said, glancing at a black bag sitting on a side table—the same bag that contained the head of Luigi Morsuno. "Group A, the 'expendable' remnants led by Ryouki, will hit the Police Central Command at 06:00. A suicide diversion to draw the tactical units away from our real target. A lot of corrupted cops are gonna protect Sabushi, that's why we gonna need to make some chaos."

Kai shivered a little. He had remembered about Yuki Nakamura, the leader of the police.

A clever woman like her would never stay still in a situation like this.

Rei then turned his focus to Hina.

"Hina, you are the 'Offering'. You will return to Sabushi's inner circle at the hotel, pretending to surrender. You'll bring him the 'corpse' of your distraction—Luigi's head, dyed white and laced with Kai's DNA. He's smart, but a severed head and a missing person's report confirmed by the police will make the lie realistic enough to buy us the seconds we need."

Hina clenched her fists. She had already agreed to this to keep Kai safe, but the risk was staggering. Her posture remained composed, but her grey eyes burned with a silent, murderous rage.

The fact about seeing the face of her 'father' again was enough to make someone strong like her feel weak.

"While the main distraction unfolds," Rei continued, his tone darkening, "I will use our satellite radar to lock onto Sabushi's exact position. I'll hunt him down myself."

Then, he looked at Kai.

"Kai, you go with Akira. You'll flank the hotel from the North, taking the service entrance while the security is focused on Hina's 'return'. You are the 'Trigger'. Your objective is the encrypted ledger—a drive containing the names of every shadow official on the Kobayashi payroll. Find it. Take it. And eliminate anyone in your way. Akira will support you from above."

Kai took a sharp breath and then nodded his head despite his shaking fists..

The thought of his parents—scared, crying, mourning a son who was still alive—made him feel like he was on the verge of a panic attack.

Rei immediately understood what he was thinking.

"They're really terrified, Kai," Rei added with a sinister chuckle, noticing his reaction. "It makes the scenario much more believable, don't you think?"

Kai lowered his head, barely processing the cruelty. There was no going back now. He looked at Hina; her hands were trembling ever so slightly, a sign of the immense pressure she was under.

"Twelve hours to prepare was a luxury," Rei said, checking his watch. "Now, we have thirty minutes. Check your weapons. Akira, take the boy. Hina... prepare your 'gift'."

The hall began to empty as the soldiers scrambled to their vehicles. Hina grabbed Kai's hand one last time, her grip like iron.

"Remember," she whispered in his ear. "Rei wants power. But we want freedom. Bring that drive to me, Kai. Not to him. I'll wait for you on top. Sabushi is too smart for something like this. Rei is planning something else."

"Whatever it takes," Kai promised, his gaze hardening definitively, probably extinguishing the last light of his humanity.

The slaughter was about to begin.
