Chapter 171 - Chapter 170: Jōnin Conference

Picking up a disciple for free while simultaneously establishing a connection with the Hyuga clan, when everything settled, even Asahi himself couldn't help but feel a strange sense of disbelief.

'Did I step on something lucky when I left the house this morning…?'

It was an absurd thought, yet the situation unfolding before him truly felt that way. Opportunities that others might never encounter in a lifetime seemed to have gathered around him in a short span of time, stacking one upon another in a way that almost felt unnatural.

However, that fleeting sense of fortune quickly faded.

Asahi was not naïve enough to believe that such gains came without underlying conditions. Cooperation, especially between powerful factions like the Hyuga clan and himself, was never built on trust alone. At its core, it was nothing more than a carefully balanced exchange of interests.

Right now, the Hyuga clan was extending goodwill because he was valuable.

But value was not permanent.

If he failed to continue proving himself, if his strength stagnated, if his prestige declined, or if he failed to meet expectations, then this fragile alliance could collapse at any moment.

'This is only the beginning…'

Returning home, Asahi did not immediately rest. Instead, he sat quietly, allowing his thoughts to settle as he began organizing everything he currently possessed.

From a broader perspective, the structure of power surrounding him had already taken shape.

First, there was his identity as Tsunade's disciple. This alone granted him significant authority within Konoha Hospital, effectively placing one of the village's most critical logistical centers under his indirect control. Medical resources, treatment personnel, emergency response, these were not flashy assets, but in times of war, they were indispensable.

Second, through the secret of the Mangekyō Sharingan, he had established a connection with the Uchiha clan. Though this relationship was still delicate and filled with mutual caution, it was nonetheless a doorway into one of Konoha's most powerful bloodline factions.

Third, there was his cooperation with Shimura Danzo. The research on the First Hokage's cells was not merely a scientific endeavour, it was a bargaining chip, a bridge that tied him to Konoha's darkest and most secretive force.

And now… the Hyuga clan.

The clan possessing the Byakugan, unparalleled in reconnaissance and perception, and one that had existed at the core of Konoha's noble hierarchy since its founding.

Unconsciously, Asahi had already woven himself into multiple layers of Konoha's power structure.

'If all of this could be unified…'

The thought surfaced naturally.

If he could truly integrate these forces, if he could transform these loose alliances into something closer to control, then the resulting power would no longer be something that merely existed in the shadows.

It would be enough to stand openly against the Hokage himself.

Even to gradually erode and replace that authority.

And in terms of prestige…

Among civilian ninjas, his reputation was already approaching that of the Third Hokage. Not equal, but close enough that the difference could be bridged with time and achievement.

But the moment this thought reached its peak, Asahi calmly suppressed it.

Because he understood something clearly.

This was not a foundation.

It was a house of sand.

The Uchiha clan supported him only because of shared interests. The Hyuga clan saw him as a potential future investment. Danzo… well Danzo was typical Danzo. He was undoubtedly using him, and perhaps even now was considering how to eliminate him once he outlived his usefulness.

None of these forces truly belonged to him.

'Control… is still far away.'

And yet, despite all these external advantages, Asahi knew that his greatest asset was something else entirely.

Information.

Knowledge of the world itself.

The abilities of powerful individuals. The hidden truths of bloodlines. The trajectory of future events.

These were things no one else possessed.

And more importantly, these were things that could be turned into tangible power.

Every step he had taken so far, whether it was cooperating with Danzo, approaching Uchiha Chizuru, or even becoming Tsunade's disciple, had been built upon this foundation.

Information was his true weapon.

'As long as I use it correctly… I won't lose.'

With this thought, his mind gradually settled.

The next day.

Asahi was seated in his office, a scroll of sealing techniques spread open before him. Complex formulas and intricate patterns filled the parchment, each line representing a principle that governed the manipulation of chakra at its most fundamental level.

His gaze moved slowly across the text, analyzing, memorizing, reconstructing.

Then, a sharp cry pierced the air.

Kee-eeeee-arr—!

Asahi paused, his eyes shifting toward the window.

Outside, a grey ninja hawk circled above Konoha, its wings cutting through the air as it repeatedly called out. The rhythm of its cry was not random, it carried a specific pattern, one that only shinobi familiar with Konoha's signalling system would recognize.

"...A Jōnin assembly?"

His eyes narrowed slightly.

The timing was too precise.

Konoha had just endured the Nine-Tails' attack. The village was still in recovery. Under normal circumstances, a large-scale assembly like this would not be convened unless something significant had occurred.

And there was only one possibility that fit.

'Other villages… have started moving.'

Without hesitation, Asahi closed the scroll, rose to his feet, and pushed open the window.

His figure disappeared in an instant.

The Hokage Building.

By the time Asahi arrived, the conference room was already filled.

Nearly all of Konoha's remaining jōnin had gathered, their expressions solemn, conversations hushed and restrained. The atmosphere carried a weight that made even casual breathing feel heavy.

No one spoke openly.

But everyone understood that something serious had happened.

Asahi quietly took a seat, his presence barely drawing attention.

Then, the door opened.

Sarutobi Hiruzen.

Utatane Koharu.

Mitokado Homura.

Shimura Danzo.

The four pillars of Konoha entered together.

The moment they appeared; the room fell completely silent.

This alone was enough to confirm it, that this was no ordinary meeting.

The Third Hokage took his seat, his expression calm but heavy, and without any preamble, he spoke:

"We have received intelligence. Kumogakure has deployed a large number of shinobi along the border of the Land of Fire. Some units have already crossed into our territory."

A ripple passed through the room.

"They intend to test Konoha's strength… in the aftermath of the Nine-Tails incident."

The words settled like a weight on every heart.

War.

The possibility, once thought distant, was now pressing against their doorstep once again.

Nara Shikaku was the first to speak.

"This is a probe," he said calmly. "They want to see how weakened we are. If we show hesitation, it won't just be Kumogakure. Other villages will follow."

Danzo immediately responded.

"Then there is no need for hesitation," he said coldly. "We should strike first. Send troops and crush their advance. Let them understand that Konoha is not something to be tested."

His tone was decisive, almost aggressive.

But beneath that decisiveness lay calculation.

Danzo's forces, Root, would not be the ones bearing the brunt of open warfare. That responsibility would fall to the Hokage's forces and the general shinobi population.

Yet, if victory was achieved—

The benefits, the prestige, the influence, those could still be claimed.

Hiruzen did not even look at him.

Instead, he continued:

"We will establish a defensive line at the border," he said. "Avoid direct conflict unless absolutely necessary. Our priority is stability. Konoha has just regained peace, we must preserve it."

Danzo's eyes darkened slightly.

"Hiruzen… you are being naïve."

The tension in the room thickened.

Asahi watched silently.

From a purely strategic standpoint, Danzo's approach was more direct, more aggressive, and perhaps more effective in deterring enemies.

But the Third Hokage…

He was thinking about something else entirely.

It was not victory, not dominance, but people.

It was about the lives.

'That's the difference…'

Asahi leaned back slightly, his gaze steady.

Hiruzen wanted to win without unnecessary loss.

Danzo was willing to sacrifice anything for victory.

Both loved Konoha.

But the way they expressed that love, was fundamentally different.

And in that difference…

Lay the reason why one stood in the light, and the other remained in the shadows.
