Chapter 139 - Chapter 138: Planning

That night, Tsunade left Konoha with Shizune. They departed silently, without leaving any word for their comrades, and the news only reached Asahi the following morning.

The outcome he had feared the most had finally come to pass.

Last night, Asahi had revealed everything to Tsunade—the reasons behind his decision to follow Orochimaru in the past, the circumstances that led him to become her disciple, and the truth of his actions during that time. He had made it clear that although he once obeyed Orochimaru's orders, he had never betrayed her directly. He had not stolen the Senju clan's secret techniques, nor had he leaked any information about Tsunade herself.

Despite his honesty, Tsunade's anger had not subsided. After explaining himself, Asahi had seen in her eyes only fury and disappointment. When she raised her fist, ready to kill him for his past mistakes, he had no choice but to retreat.

Her departure left behind a complicated knot of emotions in his heart. Relief and guilt tangled together. On one hand, there was a sense of release; the truth had been spoken, and the burden of secrets was no longer solely his to bear. Yet at the same time, self-blame gnawed at him.

'If I had known things would end like this, I would never have chosen to follow Orochimaru back then.' he thought bitterly. But regrets were powerless against the march of time. What had happened could not be erased, nor could the choices he once made be undone. All he could do now was accept the consequences and find a way to atone for deceiving Tsunade.

Tsunade had always loved Konoha at her core, despite her bitterness toward the village's politics and its endless wars. That was why, in the silence of his own heart, Asahi vowed that he would protect the village and the ideals Tsunade once believed in. If she could not stay in Konoha, then at the very least, he would remain behind to watch over it in her stead.

As for bringing her back? Asahi knew he was not the one for that task. He lacked Naruto's unshakable charisma, that burning spirit capable of piercing the walls in people's hearts. Most of all, convincing someone required trust and recognition—and Tsunade's disappointment in him had severed that fragile bridge.

'That role belongs to Naruto. He will succeed where I cannot.'

He could only believe that as long as they all lived in the same world, their paths would cross again.

Life was like that—woven with partings and reunions, sorrow and joy, hope and despair. For Asahi, this was merely the end of one chapter. The story of his life had not yet finished.

Tsunade was gone, but life moved forward.

When he formally took over the management of Konoha Hospital, Asahi's daily existence grew more stable. The war had ended, and though the scars it left behind were deep, there were fewer wounded filling the hospital wards. Without constant battle casualties flooding in, the atmosphere became calmer. His responsibilities were heavy, but far less draining than the chaos of war.

Each day settled into a quiet rhythm. Mornings were spent at the hospital, either treating patients or pursuing his medical research. Afternoons often led him to the training grounds, where he refined his skills in solitude. Compared to the bloody turmoil of the frontlines, it was almost peaceful.

Meanwhile, Minato had ascended as the Fourth Hokage. With the white cloak draped across his shoulders and the mantle of leadership firmly placed upon him, his life changed overnight. Every day, he drowned in endless scrolls, missions, and decisions that would shape the future of the village.

Asahi watched with some amusement. If the choice had been his, he would never have taken that position. To sit cooped up in the Hokage's office day after day, buried in paperwork and the constant demands of the village, sounded suffocating. He would have gone mad.

But Minato… Minato seemed to thrive on it. His gentle smile never left his face, as though even the burdens of leadership could not bend his spirit. In love and in power, he was a man who could truly be called a winner in life. Every glance at him made it clear—Namikaze Minato had achieved everything he dreamed of.

That optimism infected the village itself. The war was over, prosperity bloomed again, and peace settled over Konoha like sunlight after rain. Villagers laughed more easily, children played freely in the streets, and shinobi walked without the heavy weight of war upon their shoulders. It was a time of healing, and for those without grand ambitions, Konoha offered genuine tranquility.

But for the ambitious, peace was dangerous. It dulled the senses, eroded purpose, and swallowed one whole in complacency. To some, that quiet stability was no better than poison.

Asahi knew this well. He had seen it firsthand in Orochimaru.

During the war, Orochimaru had thrived. As a battlefield commander, he had endless access to materials for his forbidden experiments, and with Asahi assisting him in medical ninjutsu, everything flowed smoothly. But when the war ended, those doors closed. He lost the shield of necessity, the justification of battle, and the steady flow of bodies to use as subjects.

Stripped of Asahi's cooperation and of war's grim abundance, Orochimaru grew desperate. His ambitions didn't wane, but the means to pursue them shrank. And in his desperation, he turned his hands upon the very shinobi of Konoha.

Recently, Asahi had heard whispers: reports of missing-nin who were not rogues from outside, but shinobi of Konoha itself vanishing in the night. The Anbu had already been dispatched by Minato to investigate, but so far, their search yielded nothing concrete.

Asahi, however, needed no investigation to guess the truth. Orochimaru was behind it.

Perhaps Orochimaru already intended to abandon Konoha and was deliberately provoking suspicion. Or perhaps this was his way of severing his last ties. After all, the Third Hokage still clung to hope that his prized disciple might return to the right path. Even without proof, Sarutobi Hiruzen must have known in his heart what was happening. His silence was born of denial, of a faint and fading wish that Orochimaru might come back.

But Orochimaru would never return. To him, neither the bonds of the village nor the trust of his teacher were worth as much as his own pursuit of truth.

Asahi understood that now, watching events unfold. He and Orochimaru were not the same. Though Asahi had once walked a dark road, he could not abandon human bonds so easily. He longed for recognition, for connection, even if only from a distance. Orochimaru's path was one of isolation; Asahi's, despite everything, was not.

'Even if I can't have those bonds… it's enough just to see them, to stand nearby.' he admitted to himself.

For now, he waited. He knew the moment of Orochimaru's defection was drawing near. When that day came, Asahi would act. His target was not Orochimaru himself, but the summoning contract of Ryūchi Cave. He needed its power if he was to stand against what was to come.

The original story suggested that when Orochimaru finally left, he clashed first with the Anbu and then with Jiraiya. Though Jiraiya could not defeat him, the battle would still drain Orochimaru's strength. That would be the best chance to strike—when the snake was weakened.

Yet even knowing that, Asahi held no illusions. Even weakened, Orochimaru was far beyond what he could handle alone. His half-trained skills were enough to defend himself, but not enough to achieve victory.

So he thought of allies. The first name that surfaced in his mind was Uchiha Chizuru.

It had been a long time since he last saw him. He wondered how he was faring, whether his Mangekyō Sharingan had awakened, and whether he had grown stronger.

Taking advantage of his recent return from a mission, Asahi sent word and arranged a meeting. At five o'clock that evening, he left the hospital and made his way to a familiar barbecue restaurant. In a private room, he found him waiting.

"Chizuru-senpai, long time no see." he greeted with a faint smile, settling across from him.

Uchiha Chizuru's cold eyes met his, unimpressed. "It's been a while. But every time I see you, trouble follows."

Asahi chuckled softly. "And yet, you still came. That means, despite everything, you still expect something from me."

His gaze sharpened, but he didn't deny it.
