Some time later…
The black car stopped in front of the Volkov family estate. It was almost night, the sky had darkened, and small stars appeared in the sky, and a soft air blew through the trees lining the long driveway. Vaughn stepped out of the car. He didn't speak to the driver and walked straight inside.
The house was warm and filled with the smell of food. But it didn't make him feel at home.
He removed his coat and handed it to one of the maids without a word. His eyes were dull, and his face showed no sign of peace, even after a long day. His hand went to his pocket, checking his phone for updates. It was still nothing.
He walked to the dining room.
His mother, Emery, was already there. She was placing the last plate on the table. Her soft smile appeared the moment she looked at her son. She hadn't seen him properly in days. "You're here," she said gently, her voice calm but concerned.
Vaughn nodded his head. "You asked me to come for dinner."
