Chapter 10 - Fight in the Convenience store

Outside the sun was high in the sky, casting a harsh glare off the shattered glass and twisted metal.

Kai finished the last bit of the roasted rat, the taste lingering unpleasantly on his tongue. He sat hunched over on the debris, lost in contemplation. Should he try to find shelter, or perhaps seek out another district, hoping for better luck with scavenging?

His internal debate was abruptly cut short by a jarring sound. The already broken door of the convenience store screeched further as it was shoved inwards with a sickening crunch. Kai's head snapped up, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Silhouetted against the afternoon light stood a creature straight out of his worst nightmares.

It was a goblin.

''Graaaa!"

The goblin attacked, oblivious to the change in weaponry, charged with a guttural roar. Years spent navigating the treacherous alleys of the slums honed Kai's reflexes. He sidestepped the creature's clumsy lunge, the stench of sweat and decay washing over him. Drawing on a well of primal instinct, he retaliated with a swift, practiced strike.

The black sword, surprisingly light in his hand, sang through the air. Kai didn't aim for a killing blow – not yet.

The black sword sang a sharp song as it sliced through the air. Kai, fueled by desperation and honed by the harsh realities of the slums, aimed not for a killing blow, but for a strategic one. The goblin's charge carried it forward, unaware of the deadly arc of metal about to meet its arm. The blade connected with a sickening thud – not the clean slice Kai had hoped for, but a heavy impact nonetheless.

A shriek of pain and rage erupted from the goblin.

''Gafuh!"

It stumbled back, clutching its wounded arm, a dark stain blossoming on the scavenged leather armor. Kai seized his opportunity. He pressed the advantage, lunging forward with a series of quick strikes. The goblin, hampered by the injury and surprised by Kai's unexpected skill, could only flail back with its remaining arm. The clang of metal on metal echoed through the ruined convenience store, a chaotic counterpoint to the creature's pained snarls.

This wasn't a duel of knights, a graceful dance of death. It was a brutal brawl for survival, a desperate struggle between a man and a monster in the ruins of a fallen world. Kai fought with a ferocity born of necessity, his movements fueled by adrenaline and the primal urge to live. He rained blows down on the goblin, each clang chipping away at its defenses, his own exhaustion a dull roar in the back of his mind, ignored for the moment.

Kai's relentless assault pushed the goblin back, but desperation can breed recklessness. The creature, fueled by a primal rage, saw an opening. With a guttural roar, it sidestepped a downward swing and lashed out with its uninjured arm. The blow caught Kai squarely on the jaw, the impact sending a jolt of pain through his skull.

''Gah!"

The world lurched sideways.

''!!"

The metallic tang of blood filled his mouth as he tasted the harsh reality of his own mortality. His grip on the black sword slackened, the weapon clattering to the floor with a heavy thud. Before he could recover, the goblin lunged, a monstrous fist connecting with his chest.

Bam!

The air whooshed out of Kai's lungs in a strangled gasp. He flew backward through the air, a ragdoll tossed by an unseen hand.

His back slammed against a broken shelf, the impact stealing the breath from his remaining lungs.

''!"

A cough wracked his body, a crimson spray erupting from his mouth. Stars danced before his eyes, the world blurring at the edges. Dazed and reeling, Kai slumped to the ground, the cold concrete biting through his ragged clothes.

He lay there, his vision swimming, the taste of blood metallic on his tongue. The black sword lay a few feet away, mockingly out of reach. A low growl ripped through the haze, snapping him back to his precarious reality. The goblin loomed over him, its yellow eyes gleaming with predatory hunger. Kai had gambled for survival, and for a fleeting moment, he'd tasted victory.

The world blurred at the edges, a crimson tide threatening to pull him under. But a flicker of defiance, a spark from the memory of the black sword, ignited a primal roar within him.

"N..no way, I...I will never surrender!" The primal words erupted from his core, a rebellious defiance against the advancing shadow.

Just as the goblin leaned down, its fetid breath washing over Kai's face, a surge of adrenaline coursed through his battered body.

Swoosh!

With a superhuman burst of energy, Kai launched himself forward. His broken body defied all logic, surging upwards in a desperate lunge.

The goblin, surprised by the sudden movement, stumbled back. The impact was a thunderous thud as Kai collided with the creature, sending it tumbling onto the dusty floor.

''Guh!"

A surge of pain lanced through him, a symphony of agony conducted by his fractured ribs and screaming muscles. But for a fleeting moment, he had the upper hand.

Kai didn't waste a second. Scrabbling with surprising agility, he snatched the black sword from the floor. His vision was a kaleidoscope of colors, but he locked onto the goblin's wide, startled eyes. With a primal yell that echoed through the ruined store, he brought the sword down in a vicious arc.

"Die!" The utterance echoed through the air, a raw shriek born of terror, desperation, and an unyielding determination to endure.

The black sword, imbued with his raw emotion, connected with the goblin's chest in a spray of blood and bone. A surprised gurgle escaped the creature's throat as its eyes widened in shock. Then, with a heavy thud, it went limp, life extinguished in a single, brutal blow.

Kai slumped back.

''Hah! Hah!"

- His ragged breaths rasping against the silence. The metallic tang of blood filled his mouth, his own or the goblin's, he couldn't tell. His body ached with every fiber, a testament to the brutal struggle. But staring down at the lifeless goblin, a wave of exhaustion washed over him, a sweet, heavy languor. He had won. Against all odds, he had survived.
