Chapter 51 - Chapter 51: The Journey of Zelma

We've focused a lot on the human race thus far. I mean, Alix is a human herself and is from a nation comprised of mostly other humans so that shouldn't be too unexpected. There are other races, however.

For example, the ever magical Elves. Elves reside within Talia, The Forest Nation. It is quite literally a nation that is more forest than plains or mountains. Other races tend not to visit due to the magic nature of the forests. The paths constantly shift and high level monsters roam freely.

So, not the most tourist friendly place.

These features are also the reason that elves don't tend to leave the forest willingly. They would either be required to leave on some mission or be exiled by the Elven Council.

One such elven woman received the latter. Elves are the receivers of Yggdriel's Blessing. Yggdriel is the Primordial Elemental that made their home within a certain tree that became known as the Yggdrasil.

This tree was then blessed by Yoni, Goddess of Nature and Fortune. Being so close to said tree gave the elven race closer more common contact with spirits. This allowed them to become Spirit Savants easier than other races to receive Spirit Eyes.

Spirit Eyes were a sign that one had been touched by the spirits. They allowed the owner to see mana and spirits with their very own eyes. This allowed them to become Spirit Savants as they learned magic from said spirits.

The woman that was exiled did not receive the spirit eyes though, that was not the reason that she was exiled. You see elves understand that even if they have a higher chance than any other race that it is still possible for them to not receive the eyes.

No, the issue was that this woman committed treason against her own race. She was designated as a Wood Elf making her essentially a worker for the High Elves. Wood Elves were hunters, gatherers, scouts, guards, builders, and a few more menial physical jobs that the High Elves didn't want to deal with.

This elf, named Zelma, was a scout. One day whilst she was scouting she happened upon a group trying to make their way through the forest. She immediately assumed that they were kidnappers trying to get their hands on some High Elves.

High Elves did have the ability to contact spirits after all, so most places they went became mana dense locations. Their very attractive looks were just a bonus.

Now, instead of warding the group away as she had been taught, Zelma had a different plan. She led the group through the forest and down an alternate path hidden from the High Elven council.

She essentially snuck the group in through a back entrance allowing them to capture several unsuspecting High Elves and get away. It didn't take long for the council to discover Zelma's betrayal leading to her exile.

Once out of Talia, Zelma was left ambitionless. She honestly didn't even understand why she assisted those criminals with the capture of her fellow elves. She just felt so...bad. She couldn't describe the feeling but knew that she didn't like feeling it.

She wandered the lands with no real purpose. She became an adventurer and found that though her magic ability was lesser than the High Elves it was still higher than most other mortal races.

She climbed the ranks easily as a top class Mage and amassed a great fortune. After who knows how long, Zelma was passing through Eidron and met a human male that caught her fancy.

It wasn't like she spent all of these years alone in fact, the elf had several relationships of varying levels.

This was different. She started to spend a lot of time with the man.

She started feeling down if she didn't get to see the man during the day and would perk right up from a bad day just by talking to him. She never engaged in any sort of physical relationship with him but that was fine for now. With this man she felt complete.

Then, she discovered that the man was in a romantic relationship with another. When the woman asked the man about this he simply told her that he had been married two years by that point. That he was glad that Zelma was such a good friend. That thanks to her him and his wife were getting along better than ever before.

Zelma was crushed. She felt betrayed. She felt cheated and lied to! Sure she had never asked the man if he had someone but she just assume that he was with her because he didn't.

That feeling from her exile returned. That sick, twisted, terrible feeling that she could never quite understand. It was worse this time. Far worse! She wanted it to go away. Needed it to!

One night while hanging out with the man she slipped a special herb into his drink. The herb was a type of aphrodisiac that could not be found around these parts. That night, the man and elf had an exchange of flesh in the man's own home.

The following morning they were discovered by the man's wife. He begged for forgiveness. Pleaded to his wife that it was a mistake. That he didn't know why he did it but the woman refused to hear it.

The two divorced leaving the man wallowing in sorrow and the woman with a terrible feeling of betrayal. All the while, Zelma lavished in the aftermath. She no longer cared about being with the man. She was just thrilled that her planned worked nothing else mattered!

While the man did end up with Zelma those feeling were far overshadowed by the joy that she felt from tearing that relationship apart!

Years passed with the man that was now her husband. He was nowhere near as easygoing and happy as he once was but that mattered little to Zelma. The two retired from adventuring and settled down in Pesin far away from their original home in Eidron.

The two, or at least Zelma, enjoyed a lavish life in the Nation of Seafarers. During this time, Zelma felt it was high time that she had a child. She didn't know how much time the man had left after all.

Besides, she would rather have a child with this human than have to look for another. Elves, past a certain age, can choose to have children at will. It isn't like they actively allow the process but their bodies can detect when they are ready for pregnancy.

So, for the first time in Zelma's long life she became pregnant. She was far more excited than she thought she would be thinking about all that she would teach her daughter. All that they would do together!

Though she had no qualms with having a son as well but she did truly hope for a daughter that she could truly connect with. When the time finally arrived the couple summoned the doctor to their home.

By Pesinwok standards their family was designated as Baronets as they hadn't enough funds or contributions to make it any higher. That still allowed them a personal doctor but they weren't terribly rich even being looked down upon by higher nobles.

Zelma did not like it but tried to focus on her child. After a long grueling process the girl was finally born. Zelma's husband cried tears of joy. The doctor congratulated the couple on their newborn.

Zelma, however, sat completely silently. She held her baby within her arms motionlessly. Their was no joy. No warmth. There was just that feeling. It came once again and she finally realized what it was.

Envy.

When she helped the criminals, it was because she was envious of the High Elves lavish, carefree lifestyle while she struggled!

When she broke up the couple, it was because the was envious of the woman that was with the man that she was in love with!

And now...

With her own daughter.

She who had lived this entire life with envy. Being toxic to others for having even the slightest bit more all starting from her own birth.

She stared down at her daughter enraged and envious at the sight!

As the girl had somehow, even far away from Talia, been born...

With the Spirit Eyes.
