Chapter 3 - The Concealed wound

The words still hung in the air like smoke.

You are not who you think you are.

Alex didn't move.

He didn't blink.

For a moment, it felt like even his heartbeat had stopped trying to make sense of life.

Abbie stood behind him, her hands slowly lowering from her mouth. Her eyes shifted between Alex and Rose, as if looking for someone to explain what reality had just turned into.

But no one did.

Because Rose wasn't done.

"I was never your real mother," she repeated softly, voice breaking but steady enough this time. "But I carried you like you were mine."

Alex finally spoke, but it came out hollow.

"Then… who am I?"

Rose swallowed hard.

"That's the part I was never supposed to tell you."

A long silence followed.

The kind that doesn't just fill a room… it destroys it.

✦ TEN YEARS AGO

Rose's voice changed as she began.

Not weaker.

Older.

As if she had stepped backward into a life she had spent years trying to forget.

"I was a nurse," she said. "Working in a private maternity facility outside the city."

Alex listened, but his expression remained frozen.

"There was a night… a stormy night… when everything changed."

The hospital lights flickered that night.

Power unstable. Rain hitting the windows like something trying to break in.

A woman had been rushed in—unconscious, bleeding, alone.

"No ID," Rose whispered. "No relatives. Just a file labeled 'confidential.'"

Abbie leaned forward slightly, tense.

Rose continued.

"She was pregnant… and she kept saying only one thing before she passed out."

A pause.

"'Protect him.'"

Alex's fingers twitched.

"…him?"

Rose nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"The baby."

The room tightened again.

"She went into cardiac arrest during delivery," Rose said. "We tried everything. But she didn't survive."

Silence.

"But the baby did."

Alex's breathing became uneven.

Rose looked directly at him now.

"And that baby… was you."

The world didn't explode.

It simply… cracked.

Alex stepped back slowly, shaking his head.

"No."

His voice rose.

"No, that's not true."

Rose's eyes filled again.

"It is."

Abbie reached for him, but he moved away instinctively.

"You're lying," he said sharply. "You're saying I just appeared out of nowhere?"

Rose shook her head.

"I'm saying you were left behind on purpose."

✦ THE FILE THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Rose continued, voice trembling now.

"When I checked the records… there was something strange. Your file wasn't normal."

She hesitated.

"Your birth certificate wasn't complete. Your father's name was missing. Your identity wasn't finalized. It was like someone was trying to erase you before you even existed."

Alex's jaw tightened.

"Why would anyone do that?"

Rose hesitated too long before answering.

"That's what I tried to find out."

A deeper silence followed.

Then—

"I made a mistake," she admitted. "I got attached."

Her voice cracked completely now.

"I wasn't supposed to take you out of that system. I wasn't supposed to bring you home."

Abbie's eyes widened slightly.

"You… stole him?"

Rose didn't deny it.

"I saved him."

Alex's laugh was sharp.

"You ruined my life."

Rose flinched.

"I gave you a life."

"No!" Alex snapped, stepping forward. "You gave me a lie!"

His voice broke at the end.

And that was worse than anger.

That was pain finally spilling out.

✦ THE NAME THAT WAS NEVER HIS

Rose lowered her gaze.

"There's something else…"

Alex froze.

"What now?"

Her voice dropped.

"Your real name wasn't Alex."

A pause.

"You were never registered as Alex."

Abbie looked confused.

"Then what was he called?"

Rose looked up slowly.

And said the name like it hurt her throat to speak it.

"…Adrian."

The room went completely still.

Even Alex stopped breathing.

Rose continued, quieter now.

"Adrian Kade."

"That was the name on the original file."

She swallowed.

"And the file was marked under a government-linked protection program."

Abbie frowned.

"Protection program?"

Rose nodded.

"Yes."

A beat.

"Because your existence… was dangerous."

Alex stared at her like she had finally crossed into madness.

"Dangerous to who?"

Rose hesitated.

Then whispered the part she had avoided for years.

"To the people who tried to erase your mother
