I whipped around to face Lilah, my heart racing.
"She is out of surgery?"
I asked, just to be sure that I heard right
"Yes, the surgery was successful Asher, she pulled through "
Lilah said with a huge smile on her face. Her face was blotched in spots, revealing that she had been crying and her hair was out of the loose bun it had been in when she arrived earlier.
I rushed to her and wrapped my arms around her, startled by how fragile she felt.
She wasn't the Lilah I knew—the one who always had it together, who filled the gaps my mother left behind.
She looked older, worn down, like life had finally caught up with her.
"Thank you, thank you so much"
I murmured.
Lilah patted my head in response. Words did not need to be passed for me to understand that despite her reservations of the relationship I and Audrey shared, she was letting us have our chance.
I immediately rushed out of the room, I had to be by her side when she opened her eyes.
