Chapter 426 - Chapter 426: Vertigo, The Ghost Plane, And Lost!

"Hello there viewers...Keiko here again...*Keiko proceeds to go and currently say this while traditionally bowing to the viewers as usual. To which Keiko then proceeds to go and bring her attention and her eyesight back up again, in order to go and continue to address the viewers. Keiko also now proceeds to go and briefly clear her throat, as Keiko then proceeds to go and continue, to properly address the viewers*...

Now then viewers, for this chapter I will once again be covering several more transportation related accidents in history...And for this particular chapter viewers as like the last one, we will be covering another three of them...

And each of them, as shown by the chapter title of this particular chapter, is going to be covering three aviation accidents, all of which involve a Boeing 737 of some kind...

Now then viewers, let us now begin with the first of the three aviation accidents...

And for this one viewers, we will start by going all the way back, to January 3, 2004...

And on this particular day...Flash Airlines Flight 604...Which was a charter flight from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, to Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris, France, with a stop over at Cairo International Airport. And on this particular day, the aircraft that was being used to operate Flash Airlines Flight 604, was a Boeing 737-3Q8...

And on board Flash Airlines Flight 604, were three pilots, 10 flight attendants, and 135 passengers...

The captain of Flash Airlines Flight 604, was 53 year old Khedr Abdullah, who had accrued almost 7,500 hours of flight time, including 474 hours on the Boeing 737...

The first officer was 25 year old Amr al-Shaafei, who had fewer than 800 hours of flying experience, with 242 of them on the Boeing 737...

And also in the cockpit was 42 year old Ashraf Abdelhamid, who was training as a first officer and had experience flying corporate jets....

And as for what wound up happening with regard to the crash that would result involving Flash Airlines Flight 604?...

Well shortly after takeoff from Sharm El Sheikh at the start of Flash Airlines Flight 604s flight, which was being conducted during the very early hours in a basically pitch black dark night over the Red Sea. And the crew was supposed to make a left turn after takeoff. But sadly the aircraft instead wound up turning to the right, and kept banking in that direction until the aircraft wound up impacting into the Red Sea nose first and at a very high rate of speed...

The impact killing all 135 passengers and 13 crew members on board instantly...

And as for the cause of the crash of Flash Airlines Flight 604? Well as it turns out, the National Transportation Safety Board, or NTSB for short. Were able to determine though not with a hundred percent certainty, that the Captain of Flash Airlines Flight 604 may have suffered Vertigo and Spatial Disorientation. As the flight was being conducted in the dead of night, and if he had turned his head which he mostly likely had gone and done, the fluid in his inner ear would have made him think that the airplane was banking in the opposite direction...

Which in this case was what wound up having very severe consequences for everyone on board Flash Airlines Flight 604...

And to this day the crash of Flash Airlines Flight 604 is the worst accident involving the 737 Classic Aircraft. And is the deadliest air accident in Egypt. With only the bombing incident of Metrojet Flight 9268 being deadlier. Only that is not an air accident as it was caused by a deliberate act. Which will be covered at some point in a later chapter...

And now viewers, we will be moving onto the second of the three aviation accidents of this chapter...And for this one, we will be going a bit forward in time, all the way to August 14, 2005...

And on this particular date Helios Airways Flight 522, which at the time was being operated by a Boeing 737-31S and went by the name Olympia...

And was operating from Larnaca, in Cyprus, to Prague, in the Czech Republic, with a stopover in Athens, Greece...

On this particular flight, were two pilots, four flight attendants, and one hundred and fifteen passengers...

The captain of Flight 522 was 59 year old Hans-Jürgen Merten, who was a German contract pilot. Who had been hired by Helios for holiday flights, and had been flying for 35 years. And had accrued a total of 16,900 flight hours, including 5,500 hours on the Boeing 737...

The first officer was 51 year old Pampos Charalambous, who was a pilot who had flown exclusively for Helios for the previous five years. And had accrued 7,549 flight hours throughout his career, with 3,991 of them on the Boeing 737...

And as for the cause of the crash of Helios Airways Flight 522? Well, when the aircraft arrived at Larnaca from London earlier that morning, the previous flight crew had reported a frozen door seal and abnormal noises coming from the right aft service door. So as a result of this, they requested a full inspection of the door.  The inspection was then carried out by a ground engineer, who then performed a pressurization leak check. And to carry out this check without requiring the aircraft's engines, the pressurization system was set to 'manual.' But tragically the engineer had failed to reset it to 'auto' upon completing the test...

And so as Helios Airways Flight 522 climbed, the pressure inside the cabin gradually decreased. And as it passed through an altitude of 12,040 feet, the cabin altitude warning horn sounded. Now  this warning should have prompted the crew to stop climbing, but tragically the wound up misidentifying it as a takeoff configuration warning. Which tragically as it would happen viewers, the alert sound is identical for both the cabin altitude warning and the takeoff configuration warning...

And as the aircraft arrived, but then flew in a continuous loop over Athens, as by this point the flight crew and most of the passengers had succumb to hypoxia. Or what is also known as a lack of oxygen to the brain...

Minutes later the left engine failed, followed by the right engine also flaming out about 10 minutes later. And tragically the aircraft wound up crashing into the hills in the vicinity of the village of Grammatiko, East Attica...

The impact killing all 121 passengers and crew on board...

And to this day, the crash of Helios Airways Flight 522 is the worst air accident in Greece...

And now viewers, we will be moving onto the third and final aviation accident of this chapter...And for this one, we will be a bit forward in time, to January 1, 2007...

And on this particular date, Adam Air Flight 574. Which was a scheduled domestic passenger flight between the Indonesian cities of Jakarta, Surabaya, and Manado. And at the time, the aircraft being used to operate the route, was a Boeing 737-4Q8...

On board Adam Air Flight 574, were 96 passengers, 4 flight attendants, and 2 pilots...

The Captain of Adam Air Flight 574 was 47 year old Refri Agustian Widodo from Sidoarjo, Indonesia, who joined Adam Air in 2006. Who had logged more than 13,300 hours of flying time. And as pilot-in-command of a Boeing 737, he had more than 3,800 hours of experience...

And the First Officer of Adam Air Flight 574, was 36 year old Yoga Susanto from Magelang. Who had been an employee of Adam Air, since joining in 2006. He had 8,713 hours, though only 219 of them were on the Boeing 737...

And as for the cause of the crash of Adam Air Flight 574?

Well, the problems on board Adam Air Flight 574 started when the pilots noticed an anomaly in the inertial reference system, or the IRS for short. This then prompted the first officer to then attempt to troubleshoot, during which he wound up resetting his IRS unit by switching the knob on his side to Attitude mode. This as a result wound up disengaging the autopilot which effectively required the captain to take control and fly the plane straight and level for 30 seconds. Which would allow the realignment to be completed. However and also quite tragically, neither crew member had noticed that the autopilot was no longer engaged, and as a result the captain did not wind up taking control. And this did not help when it turned out that previous maintenance issues involving the aircraft's ailerons tended to cause the airplane to slowly roll to the right and also the nose to drop. And so when the aircraft reached 35 degrees right bank and continued to increase, this wound up causing a bank angle warning to sound in the cockpit...

And by the time the crew tried to recover, Adam Air Flight 574 was also diving towards the Java Sea at a speed of Mach 0.926, or 92.6% of the speed of sound. Which wound up causing the airframe to experience a force 3.5 times the force of gravity, while at a calibrated airspeed of 490 knots. Which unfortunately is well above the maximum speed of what a Boeing 737 is designed to handle without breaking apart. Which since this was roughly around the speed of sound, this did in fact wind up causing the aircraft to literally break apart in mid air...

To which the now fractured pieces of Adam Air Flight 574 crashed into the Java Sea, with the impact killing all 102 passengers and crew on board...

And to this day, the crash of Adam Air Flight 574 is still the worst aviation accident involving a Boeing 737-400...

And finally viewers, though I have said this in many of these same chapters before...

I will once again reiterate, that I don't mean any sort of disrespect, to those whose lives were lost by either this tragedy, or those like it...

As the only reason why I am mentioning them in these fanfics, is to help preserve the legacy of those who were injured or killed in these tragedies...

And also, to make sure that those who lost people in these tragedies, have some sort of another way to remember their loved ones...

And now viewers, this now marks the end of this non action packed filler chapter...But you can look forward to things getting right back into the action in the next chapter...And so viewers, from me, Angel Bluebell, Zachary, Catherine, and everyone else in The Four Aces Alliance...We all look forward to seeing you lot in the next chapter...So viewers, see you all there, okay?...*Keiko proceeds to go and currently say this, and this is also while Keiko is also proceeding to go and smile with both of her brown eyes closed. And this is also while Keiko also currently has her head tilted to one side, in her still usual and still very cute looking manner as well*"
