Chapter 2 - Dark Age

Empty, a word fitting for a dead city. The race that had built it from the ground up had long since fled into any shadow they could find, away from the danger. Empty was a fitting word.

Quiet was not.

"~Heeeeeeere~innn~thee~skyyyyyy~"

A voice sang across the streets of a long-forgotten city without care. Little critters all around raised their heads in curiosity at the unfamiliar sound. It didn't take long for the voice to make itself known as a shining blue light emerged between two run-down buildings. The little animals quickly fled into any crevice they could find at the sight. Whatever that was, they knew better than to stay and find out how dangerous it could be.

"Hey! You guys can stay! We can talk and stuff!" An innocent female voice screamed at the fleeing animals. Still, it fell on deaf ears as they disappeared into the concrete jungle. The voice sighed before talking to no one in particular. "Shame. Welp, whatever, time to be alone again."

"~Floaaaaating~waaay~uuup~hiiiiiiiiigh"

As the singing resumed, the blue light swept over its surroundings, searching for something inside the ruined city. Abandoned buildings stood tall against time, giant corpses of a long-past era. Rusted cars filled the streets. Some still contained the remains of what were once people, like iron coffins.

"~Nothing here~nothing there~" the female voice hummed as its light passed over the skeletons inside some of the cars, inspecting them before continuing, "~Where are you~doobie-doobie-doo~" For a long time, the light continued searching as birds flew over the city, gracing the rising sun with some chirping.

After a long search, the light's attention fell on what seemed like an embedded aircraft at the side of the road, covered in a thick layer of roots and vines that almost hid it from sight. Luckily, she had a sharp eye. The ship was almost ten meters from cockpit to tail. It was badly damaged, with a whole wing missing and scorch marks peeking between leaves across the entire hull. It had clearly been under heavy fire on its last flight.

"~What do we have here?~" The light shone over the wrecked ship, revealing a symbol faded with time beneath the vines. The emblem depicted an arrow piercing what was probably a starry night.

The back of the ship had been blown open from the outside, giving an easy entry for any light. Inside the wrecked ship, the interior matched the outside in how damaged it all was, with bullet holes in the sides and wires hanging from above.

Bodies of what had to be the crew were scattered inside, wearing worn-down armor, a few of them having holes through their skulls. The light stopped at the end of the ship, where it found one last body. Then the voice spoke again. "I've finally found you." A hint of disbelief dripped from the voice before a burst of light covered the insides of the aircraft.

A Dark Age's Tale.
