Renner
The carriage rolled smoothly through the cobbled streets of Re-Estize, its golden crest shimmering in the afternoon light. Inside, the gentle sway of the ride did nothing to disturb the girl seated by the window, her sapphire eyes gazing lazily outside with the expression of someone seeing a world she had already grown bored of.
Princess Renner Theiere Chardelon Ryle Vaiself—celebrated throughout the kingdom as a genius, lauded as the Golden Princess, praised for her kindness and compassion—sat in utter ennui.
It was such a boring day.
She had met with ministers in the morning, smiled her perfect, polite smile, and nodded at the appropriate moments. She had dined with noblewomen who chattered like birds, each one attempting to veil insults in compliments, as if Renner couldn't tear apart their little minds with a glance. They had no idea who they were dealing with—she who could dissect a person with words alone.
But what did it matter?
There was no game worth playing. No opponent worthy of her intellect. No emotion to stir her heart.
She was tired of this farce.
Her brothers were scheming fools. Zanac played the politician, but he had no true vision, and Barbro was an arrogant brute, as subtle as a warhammer. The throne meant nothing to her. Ruling this decaying kingdom, filled with ignorant nobles and short-sighted merchants, was more of a punishment than a reward.
Yet lately, she'd been thinking…
Should I go for it anyway? Just to see what happens?
Would it amuse her? Would the dance of blood and ambition bring her some flicker of excitement? She doubted it. But she had considered it—if only out of sheer, soul-deep boredom.
Her thoughts drifted like clouds. She barely noticed the capital outside the window—until something caught her eye.
No. Someone.
A man.
She saw him walking through the main boulevard, the afternoon sun catching on the deep black of his hair and the glint of an unusual earring on his right ear. He was tall, poised, his movements elegant yet powerful. There was something unnatural about him—not in a repulsive way, but the opposite. He stood apart from the city, like a perfect sculpture amidst mud huts.
Red eyes.
His gaze, even at a distance, seemed like it could pierce through layers of illusion and lay bare the truth of a person.
On his hip, a sword with an exquisite scabbard. Not overly ornate, but refined—an adventurer's weapon, perhaps, but crafted with a level of care and attention that suggested importance beyond its form.
He wasn't alone. Two women flanked him—both dangerous, by the look of them. One was beautiful in a cold, lethal way. The other… Renner's gaze skimmed past them.
They didn't matter.
Only he mattered.
Her heart, usually so still, beat once—an odd, sharp thump in her chest.
"Who is that man?" she asked aloud, her voice calm, but her eyes never leaving him.
The maid sitting beside her leaned forward, peeking through the carriage window. "He appears to be an adventurer, Lady Renner. Judging from his companions… perhaps a powerful one."
"Find everything about him."
The maid blinked. "At once, my lady. I'll begin inquiries as soon as we return to the castle."
Renner nodded slowly, then returned her gaze to the man.
She watched as he walked, unhurried yet without hesitation, like someone who owned the very ground he tread upon. People parted for him without knowing why, instinctively, like animals sensing a predator.
He is beautiful, she thought.
Not merely in appearance, though he certainly was—he had the kind of beauty that could start wars, the sort artists would ruin their hands to capture. But more than that, there was...something else.
Power.
It hung around him like a cloak, not gaudy or flamboyant, but quiet and absolute. Like a well-kept secret waiting to be revealed.
Was he nobility? A foreign prince in disguise? Or perhaps something rarer still—one of those mythical, nameless existences that moved through the world like shadows, altering fate in their wake.
She wanted to know.
She needed to know.
For the first time in a long time, curiosity bubbled up inside her, unbidden and intoxicating.
Who was he?
What did he want?
Renner's lips curved into the faintest of smiles.
Not the gentle, angelic one she showed the public, but the real one. A smile that curled with danger and delight.
"You're going to be mine," she whispered, too softly for her servant to hear.
She didn't know what he was, or what he could do.
But that didn't matter.
Whatever he was—noble, commoner, monster or myth—he would belong to her.
She would peel back his secrets one by one, crack open his world, and crawl inside.
For the first time in years, she felt alive.
She would not rest until she knew everything about him. His name. His past. His power. And most importantly—
How to make him hers.
The kingdom's future could wait.
Because for the first time, Renner had found something worth pursuing. Something far more enticing than the throne of a crumbling realm.
A beautiful, crimson-eyed mystery in the streets of Re-Estize.
And she would have him.
No, He was hers from the moment she laid her eyes on him.
