Chapter 2 - A Faithful Turn

The backyard was totally decked out, fairy lights twinkling everywhere, setting the perfect vibe for Ebony's big 16th birthday bash. Laughter and music filled the air as Ebony and her crew hung out. Seriously, this was the night they'd all been waiting for, planning for weeks, and it was finally here. You could feel the excitement buzzing.

Later, everyone sprawled out on the soft grass, deciding to play "Never Have I Ever." You know, the game where you spill all your secrets and make epic memories. It kicked off with Lily, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Okay, never have I ever snuck out of the house after curfew," she declared.

Everyone cracked up, hands shooting up in the air, admitting to their sneaky adventures. Ebony joined in, feeling that awesome connection with her friends, all the wild times they'd shared flashing back.

Then it was Ebony's turn. She thought for a sec, a playful smirk on her face. "Never have I ever had a secret crush on someone in this room," she announced. Giggles and whispers erupted as everyone started looking at each other.

Ebony's heart did a little flip-flop when her eyes met Yash's. He was like, the guy everyone had a crush on, and she definitely got those fluttery feelings whenever he was around. 'Does he feel the same?' she wondered.

Yash, totally caught off guard, blushed like crazy and raised his hand, his eyes still locked with Ebony's. The whole group erupted in cheers and playful teasing, but Ebony couldn't help but feel a rush of pure happiness. Maybe this night was going to be even more amazing than she'd imagined.

As the game went on, the energy just kept building. Secrets spilled, hilarious embarrassing moments were shared, and their friendships got even tighter.

Ebony felt so incredibly happy and connected, surrounded by people who just got her. But even with all the fun, a little thought kept nagging at Ebony: her dad's big announcement. She tried to push it away, determined to just soak up every second of the party.

Finally, as the game wrapped up, Ebony's dad called everyone over. The chatter died down, and all eyes were on him, a buzz of anticipation in the air. With a slightly heavy sigh, he began, "Hey everyone, we have a pretty big announcement to make. We're moving our main office to the city, which means we'll have to relocate our whole operation. We really appreciate your understanding and support through this big change."

As Ebony's eyes widened in disbelief, she took a deep breath to steady herself before speaking up, "Mom, Sarah, what is going on? Why was I kept in the dark about this?" Her voice quivered with a mix of hurt and confusion.

Her mother, with a calm demeanour that contrasted sharply with Evony's rising emotions, replied, "Ebony, darling, we had our reasons. It wasn't about excluding you; it was to protect you."

Sarah, Ebony's sister, chimed in, her tone laced with a hint of defiance, "Look, Ebony, I get it, you tend to jump to conclusions sometimes. But trust me, there's a whole lot more to this than meets the eye. You're kind of being a drama queen about it, you know?"

The music in the background seemed to fade into the distance as Ebony's mind raced with questions and suspicions. She felt a surge of frustration at being left out of whatever scheme her mother and sister had concocted.

Ebony's brow was definitely furrowed as her dad on the mic spoke up, his voice cutting through the noise. "Okay, everyone, listen up. We've got a big announcement. So, we're moving our main office to the city, which means… yeah, we're all relocating. We'd really appreciate it if you could stick with us through this change."

Her mom's expression softened, a little flicker of regret in her eyes. "Ebony, honey, don't worry about what your sister said," she said gently. "There are just some things you don't get yet. We were trying to keep you from stressing out."

The air got super tense, like, instantly. Every word felt heavy, adding to all the secrets and feelings swirling around. The party, which had been so fun just a minute ago, suddenly felt way less important compared to this family drama.

Ebony's stomach dropped. Anger and frustration bubbled up. How could they just uproot me from everything? My friends, my whole life? It was too much. She mumbled an excuse and bolted from the group, needing some air in the backyard. She leaned against a big tree, tears starting to well up.

Everything felt like it was spinning, this huge sense of loss hitting her hard. The laughter and music from earlier felt like a million miles away.

Just as Zayn was getting ready to slide in and talk to Ebony, he saw another guy heading right for her. Suddenly, a familiar voice cut through Ebony's thoughts. "Hey, you okay?" Ebony looked up and there was Yash, standing right next to her, looking genuinely worried. She quickly wiped her eyes and tried to smile.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just… a lot, you know?" Yash leaned against the tree beside her, his presence surprisingly calming. "Change is tough, especially when it's totally unexpected," he said. "But sometimes, it leads to something good."

Ebony let out a shaky breath, frustration creeping into her voice. "I know, but it's hard to see that right now. It feels like everything's just… going away."

Yash reached out and gently took her hand. "You're not alone in this, Eb. We'll figure it out together. And who knows," he added, giving her hand a little squeeze, "maybe this move will actually be awesome."

Ebony looked at Yash, finding a little bit of comfort in his words. As the sadness still hung around, a different kind of feeling started to surface. She couldn't help but notice how Yash, her friend forever, had been acting around her lately. The way he looked at her, the little things he did – it was making her wonder if maybe… just maybe… there was something more going on between them.

The party was winding down, and Ebony, feeling a mix of sadness and a bit buzzed from the drinks, found herself by her dad's car.

The keys felt heavy in her hand. A reckless impulse took over. Just one last drive, she thought, to clear my head. Her hands trembled slightly as she slid the key into the ignition and turned it.

The engine roared to life, a little too loud for the quiet street. She pulled out, tires squealing softly, and started driving way faster than she should have. Tears blurred her vision, making the streetlights streak into long, watery lines. The familiar road ahead seemed distorted, unreal.

She was barely paying attention, lost in her own turmoil, when a figure suddenly loomed out of the darkness, directly in her headlights. It happened in a split second. Ebony gasped, her foot instinctively slamming down on the brake pedal. The tires shrieked in protest, a desperate, high-pitched sound, but the car was moving too fast.

The sickening thud and the shattering of glass were immediate, violent. Then, a jarring lurch, and everything went black. Her consciousness dissolved into a heavy, disorienting void.
