Minato's attention remained fixed on the exhausted delegation, his blue eyes scanning the faces of the returning shinobi. His jaw tightened, the muscles in his neck standing out as he processed the implications.
"Describe them," Hiruzen demanded, his tone brooking no argument. "Their abilities, their appearance, their tactics. Everything you observed."
Kakashi could provide only limited information; they were extremely powerful, their abilities were unlike ordinary shinobi, Renjiro had deliberately stayed behind, and the extraction had been completed successfully. He described the strange coordination between the enemies, the way they moved as one, the mechanical nature of their attacks, and the unnerving precision of their assault.
"They weren't normal shinobi," Kakashi said, his voice tight with the strain of the battle. "Their attacks were coordinated, precise, and relentless. One of them had mechanical weapons that seemed to grow from its body. Another summoned creatures that regenerated when damaged. The third could manipulate gravity itself."
He paused, his visible eye carrying the weight of his observation.
"Renjiro seemed to recognise them. He knew what they were capable of before they even attacked."
Minato's expression hardened. The information was troubling; if Renjiro had recognised the enemies, then he had encountered them before. The implications were significant, and they added another layer of urgency to the situation.

Konoha's barrier continued to flicker after the assault, its protective field pulsing with the strain of the attack. The once-steady glow of the defensive seals now wavered like a candle in the wind, casting uncertain shadows across the perimeter. Barrier Division shinobi were repairing damaged sections, their seals flaring with concentrated chakra as they reinforced the weakened points. Sweat beaded on their foreheads, their hands moving with practised precision to stabilise the network. ANBU were clearing the destroyed puppets, their movements efficient, their expressions grim. The twisted metal and shattered components were being gathered and catalogued, each piece examined for any clue about their origin.
The village was still in a state of controlled chaos; civilians were being kept in their homes by strict curfew orders, patrols were being doubled, and the defensive network was being tested for hidden vulnerabilities. The streets were eerily quiet, the usual bustle of daily life replaced by the tense silence of a village under threat. Shopkeepers had shuttered their windows, and children had been called inside from their play. The atmosphere was one of watchful waiting, the kind that preceded a storm.
This created the perfect environment for someone to exploit the confusion.
Obito was concealed near the village perimeter, his Mangekyō Sharingan active, his gaze fixed on the chaos unfolding before him. He had been observing the entire operation from a hidden position, watching Minato's return, Hiruzen's defense, the barrier being attacked, and the barrier operators concentrating on multiple simultaneous breaches. His body was pressed against the rough bark of an ancient oak, his chakra suppressed to near nothing, his presence invisible to even the most skilled sensors. Internally, he recognised that this was exactly the situation he had wanted.
The puppet assault wasn't primarily intended to destroy the village because it would have been so crude, he thought. Its purpose was to create chaos around the barrier. Barrier operators distracted, ANBU deployed away from vulnerable areas, the barrier's defensive mechanisms overloaded, and the village's attention focused outward. Everything has proceeded exactly as planned.
His objective was simple; to determine whether Konoha's new barrier could actually interfere with space-time ninjutsu. The experiment had been months in the planning, and now he was finally ready to test the results.
He activated Kamui from outside the village, his body beginning to become intangible. The world around him shifted as his physical form dissolved into the dimensional void, his consciousness existing in the space between worlds. For a moment, he expected the barrier to react, to sense the dimensional shift, to trigger some alarm that would alert the village to his presence. He carefully monitored the interaction between Kamui and the barrier, his Sharingan tracing the flow of chakra across the protective field.
Nothing meaningful happened. The barrier did not react, did not shift, did not recognise the intrusion. Its seals remained inert, its detection arrays silent, its defensive mechanisms unaware of the ghost passing through them. He realised that the barrier did not prevent him from entering through Kamui. He gradually phased through the barrier and disappeared from the perimeter, his form dissolving into the dimensional void like smoke on the wind.
He emerged inside Konoha, materialising in a secluded area away from the main streets. The alley was narrow and shadowed, its walls lined with the weathered bricks of old buildings. He looked around calmly, his Sharingan scanning for any sign that he had been detected. No alarm sounded, no barrier seal activated, and nobody noticed his arrival. The village continued its controlled chaos, unaware that a ghost had walked through its walls.
I heard that the barrier can detect and respond to conventional infiltration, he concluded, but Kamui allows me to bypass its physical and spatial defences. The seals are designed to catch chakra signatures, not dimensional phasing. My plan has worked perfectly.
He took a slow breath, savouring the sensation of standing in the heart of his enemy's village. The air was cool and clean, carrying the scent of pine and distant cooking fires. It was almost peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaos he had observed from the perimeter.
He looked back toward the village perimeter, his expression hidden behind his mask. He realised the enormous commotion was ultimately unnecessary for his own infiltration. He could have entered Konoha whenever he wanted; the puppet assault wasn't actually necessary to bypass the barrier. His reaction was mildly amused rather than angry, though he recognised that the experiment had still given him valuable information.
The new barrier isn't a threat, he thought, his internal voice dismissive. Impressive against ordinary infiltration and conventional space-time techniques, but Kamui operates on an entirely different level. Renjiro's barrier isn't a problem. All that effort, all that preparation, and it still can't stop me.
He recalled Renjiro's actions and reputation, reflecting on how much attention the man had attracted; his EMS, his sealing techniques, his Hiraishin, his interference with Akatsuki, and his creation of Konoha's new barrier. He dismissed all of it with contempt, his internal voice cold with mockery.
So this is the great Renjiro, he thought, his internal voice carrying the weight of his derision. All that noise about protecting Konoha, and he still can't stop someone from walking straight through its walls. All bark and no bite. He talks about building barriers, creating defences, protecting the village, but in the end, it's all just posturing.
He took a step forward, his footsteps silent on the worn cobblestones. The village was still recovering from the puppet assault, its attention focused outward, its defences oriented toward external threats. He was already inside, invisible, untouchable.
He remembered something more important; Renjiro had forced him to react. Whether through the barrier, his actions against Konoha's enemies, or his interference with Obito's plans, Renjiro had become an obstacle. He decided that since Renjiro had effectively interfered with him, he would return the favour. His tone became colder as the infiltration shifted from reconnaissance to retaliation.
I don't need to fight Renjiro directly, he thought. I don't need to prove Kamui is superior. I simply need to hit Konoha somewhere Renjiro cares about. I need to make him understand that his efforts are meaningless, that his defences are worthless, that his vaunted protection is an illusion.
He looked around the village, his eyes narrowing as he began mentally searching for a particular location. He remembered the information he had gathered about Konoha's political structure; certain clans had greater strategic importance than others. One particular name came to mind: Shimura. He considered whether their compound would make an appropriate target, a strike that would send a message to the village's leadership.
He paused, looking around at the surrounding buildings. Then he muttered to himself, his voice barely audible:
"Now… where was the Shimura compound?"
