In the Darkness - The Veil Between Lives
When life ends, the soul enters the eternal cycle of reincarnation. This pure energy carries the subtle imprints of its past actions—like karmic whispers etched upon its essence—guiding it toward its next life. Yet each soul begins with a fresh perspective, unburdened by past memories, free to forge a new path toward dharma and enlightenment.
This sacred cycle remains largely inviolate. Only those who have achieved enlightenment and understand the Primordial laws of life and death can influence a soul's journey, and even then at great cost. Beyond these rare instances, only the Primordial Gods themselves may redirect a soul's destiny.
Now, in the vast darkness where countless souls flow toward rebirth, a disturbance suddenly ripples through the void. Reality itself fractures, forming a jagged crack. Eight orbs of vibrant purple energy emerge, pulsing with power as they streak through the darkness, each targeting a specific soul among the multitudes.
Gods' Realm - Mount Kailash
In the serene, lush expanse of the celestial abode, Lord Shiva sits deep in meditation. Suddenly, his eyes open. Despite sensing the disturbance, his expression remains perfectly serene.
Goddess Parvati, seated nearby on a marble dais amid flowering vines, immediately senses the shift. "What troubles you, Swami?" she asks, concern touching her gentle features. "The banished ones have made their move," Lord Shiva replies, his voice soft yet resonating with cosmic power. "Soon, more apostles will walk the realms."
"More apostles…" Parvati murmurs, her brow furrowing. "Then your vision comes to pass—turmoil will spread across the realms, and the tournament the children arrange will ignite the next great war." Worry shadows her face as she contemplates the fate of countless innocent lives. After a moment, she asks, "Swami, should we send Ganesh or Kartikey to guide the young ones, to prepare them for what is to come?"
Lord Shiva remains silent, his gaze piercing through all dimensions, watching as the purple orbs merge with their chosen souls. Each union produces a violet flash visible only to divine eyes.
"As they bring turmoil, they also bring transformation," Lord Shiva finally says, turning to his beloved. His eyes soften with compassion. "I understand your concerns and share them. If you wish, our sons may offer guidance. But together, the young ones and their followers possess the strength to face what comes. You've witnessed their potential and know their true character. Despite their flaws, they embody hope, goodness, and dharma itself. Perhaps our watchful presence is enough—knowing we observe their journey will strengthen them through every trial."
Goddess Parvati contemplates his words and nods as she rises gracefully to sit beside her husband. Leaning close, she rests her head on his shoulder and whispers, "You are right, Swami. As always." She closes her eyes, her consciousness expanding to observe events unfolding across the realms. Lord Shiva gazes at her with eternal love and a warm smile before he too closes his eyes, returning to meditation.
Alacrity Alliance - Elan Lower Realm - Planet Ernaxes - Cthoria Continent - Trian Kingdom
In Riverstone village, nestled among lush mountains on a world similar to Earth, part of a twelve planet solar system in this lower realm's young universe, a child was being born. As the newborn opened his eyes for the first time, confusion rather than innocence filled his gaze. Within his infant mind stirred a startlingly adult consciousness.
'What's happening?' the awareness wondered.
"Congratulations, Laena. It's a boy," came a woman's voice.
'Huh? Who is... that?'
"Please... let... me hold... him," replied a weak woman.
As the midwife placed the infant in the exhausted mother's arms, he gazed into eyes full of love and a warm smile.
"Hi, my baby boy. I am your mother."
'Mother?' The infant fidgeted as he finally noticed his tiny hands. 'Why am I so small? Why can't I move properly? Hold on... am I a baby?'
His thoughts raced while his eyes wandered back to the weary woman. 'If I am a baby, then this woman holding me... is she really supposed to be my mother?'
The door swung open as a mild-mannered man rushed in, concern etched across his face. "Laena! Are you alright?"
Laena smiled weakly and held out the swaddled infant. "We have a son, Tomas. Would you like to hold him?"
Tomas took the child with trembling hands, joy and fear mingling on his features. "He's so small," he whispered, voice thick with emotion.
'So, this man is my father in this life?' The thoughts continued, oddly coherent now as acceptance of his situation settled in the infant's mind.
The quiet moment shattered when the door burst open again. A young girl with wild hair and bright eyes darted past the protesting midwives.
"Papa! Is it true? Do I have a little brother now?" she demanded, bouncing with excitement.
"Mei! You should wait outside," one midwife scolded, but Tomas just laughed.
"It's alright," Laena said, her exhausted face brightening at her daughter's arrival. "Let her meet him."
Tomas carefully returned the baby to Laena, then lifted Mei for a better view. "This is your little brother. He is now part of our family, our village. You must help us protect him."
The infant's eyes met Mei's eager gaze. 'So she's my sister,' he thought, studying her curious face. 'This will be interesting.'
Mei reached out a tentative finger to touch the baby's cheek. "He's so soft," she whispered, suddenly solemn. As their eyes met, a fierce protectiveness bloomed within her. "I'll be the best big sister ever," she promised. "I'll teach him everything and keep him safe. Always."
Laena and Tomas smiled at their daughter. Turning to her husband, Laena said, "I've decided on a name."
"What have you decided?"
"Kai," she replied, gazing lovingly at the infant. "His name will be Kai."
Five years passed in the peaceful mountain village. Kai had grown into a thoughtful child, while Mei had blossomed into a spirited thirteen-year-old. Their father Tomas had established himself as the village scholar, advising the chief and teaching both children and adults to read, write, and perform basic math. Their mother Laena, renowned for her combat skills, led hunting parties and defended the village from occasional beasts that wandered too close. Life was hard in this remote village, but away from the influence of the wider world, their simple existence was peaceful. Though some of the younger generation yearned to explore what lay beyond their mountains, many were content with the life they had built together.
The siblings shared an unusual bond. Mei shadowed Kai constantly, protective and doting. For his part, Kai sometimes found her hovering amusing, sometimes frustrating—especially when he sought solitude.
"How do you always find me?" Kai asked after Mei discovered his hiding spot in the hollow of an old oak like tree.
Mei grinned, pulling him out. "Big sister power," she teased, ruffling his hair. "Why are you always hiding anyway? Don't you like playing with me?" she pouted.
Kai sighed. Though only five in body, his soul carried memories of another life—one where he'd been a young man in a different more advanced world before his untimely death. "I just need to think sometimes."
"Think about what? You're always so serious," Mei complained affectionately. "Father says you have an old soul."
Stunned for a moment at her words, Kai gave a small smile and said, "Perhaps I do."
This disconnect sometimes created tension between them. Kai's habit of treating Mei as if she were younger than him—despite her physical age advantage—often resulted in her playful bullying. Yet more often than not, she deferred to his judgment, recognizing a wisdom in him that went beyond his years. His quick thinking also helped them escape punishment for most of their pranks and adventures.
One bright morning, a wave of excitement swept through the village. Five distinguished visitors arrived from the royal capital, each bearing the ornate insignia of a different magical school. Word spread rapidly—they had come to test the village children for aptitude in the mystical arts.
"Sorcerers!" Mei exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder as she grabbed Kai's hand. "This is our chance, little brother! We could train together and become powerful mages!" She practically bounced with excitement as she pulled him toward the village square.
Their parents exchanged a knowing glance before hurrying after their children. "Slow down, you two!" Laena called, though a smile played at her lips.
Kai allowed himself to be led along, his expression thoughtful. Unlike his sister, he harbored no illusions about his own prospects. His understanding of this world's "ether"—the mystical energy that powered sorcery—came entirely from books and careful observation. In private, he had already attempted basic sensing exercises and found himself curiously blocked, as if a wall existed between him and the energy that flowed through all things.
In the village square, the entire community had gathered around a simple wooden platform. At its center sat a large crystal atop an intricately carved pedestal, emitting a soft, pulsing glow.
"Children between ten and fifteen years may be tested," announced the eldest of the visitors, a stern-faced man with a flowing white beard and eyes that seemed to pierce through flesh. "Place your palm upon the crystal, and we shall see what talent lies within you."
One by one, village children approached the crystal. Most produced no reaction at all. A few elicited a faint shimmer, earning approving nods but little excitement from the experts.
When Mei's turn came, Kai gave her hand an encouraging squeeze. "You'll do great," he whispered. She straightened her shoulders and approached the crystal with determination, placing her palm firmly against its smooth surface.
The effect was immediate and dramatic. The crystal erupted with brilliant crimson light, so intense that many villagers shielded their eyes. Gasps rippled through the crowd as the five experts exchanged startled glances.
"Extraordinary fire affinity," declared a woman in flame-colored robes, her eyes gleaming with interest. "I am Ariane of Aethel Ignis School. Child, you must come with me. Your talent would flourish under our guidance."
"No," countered another in flowing azure garments. "She belongs at the Azure Shard Academy. I am Myrena from the Azure Shard Academy, and child, trust me when I say I recognize raw power that needs proper direction when I see it."
Ariane lifted her chin proudly. "Our lineage traces back to the Dragon clan of Ignia from the Higher Realms. No other school is better equipped to nurture a fire talent of this magnitude."
As the experts bickered over Mei's future, Tomas stepped forward and bowed respectfully. "Honored Sorcerers," he said, his voice quiet but firm, "might I suggest my daughter be allowed to choose her own path?"
The experts fell silent, then nodded grudgingly. All eyes turned to Mei, who stood tall despite the sudden attention.
She looked back at Kai, who sat perched on their mother's shoulders for a better view. Their eyes met, and her decision was immediate. "I want to join a school that would also accept my brother when he comes of age."
A severe-looking man in green robes scowled deeply. "Child, the world beyond these mountains is cruel and unforgiving. You must think of yourself first. Your brother will find his own way." He gestured toward Ariane. "The Aethel Ignis School would give you, with your fire affinity potential, advantages few ever receive."
The younger male sorcerer in azure robes—Myrena's colleague—stepped forward with a thoughtful expression. "Why not test the boy as well?" he suggested, pointing at Kai. "Even though we cannot take one so young now, we could return when he comes of age."
And so Kai found himself standing before the crystal, his small hand resting against its cool surface. The village fell silent, watching with anticipation.
Nothing happened. No glow, no reaction of any kind. The crystal remained inert beneath his touch.
A wave of disappointment rippled through the gathered villagers. Kai could feel his parents' regret, though they tried valiantly to hide it. The experts exchanged pitying glances.
"Not everyone is blessed with the ability to cultivate ether," the white-bearded expert said kindly to Tomas and Laena. "But your son may still lead a fulfilling life. Many contribute to society in valuable ways without magic."
Through it all, Kai maintained a composed expression. While he had hoped for a different outcome, he wasn't truly surprised. "There are other paths to power," he thought to himself. "Other ways to harness this energy. And I will find them."
That evening, as preparations were made for Mei's departure, she refused to pack her belongings. "I won't go!" she declared, tears streaming down her face as she stood defiantly before their parents.
Later, Kai found her sitting alone by the stream that ran behind their home, angrily tossing pebbles into the water. He sat beside her, letting his feet dangle in the cool current.
"You're being foolish," he said gently.
Mei wiped her tear-stained cheeks with her sleeve. "I promised to protect you. How can I do that if I'm gone?"
"By becoming strong," Kai replied, meeting her gaze. "This is a rare opportunity, Mei. The chance to train at a proper magical academy—it's what children everywhere dream of, not just in our village. But only a few ever get this chance. Look at today's results: just three chosen out of dozens."
"But what about you? Won't you be all alone?" she whispered, voice breaking.
Kai smiled, drawing on memories from his past life to find the right words. "I'll be fine. And just think—when you return, you'll amaze me with your magic and fill my ears with tales of far-off lands and your adventures." He nudged her playfully, his eyes brightening. "You'll learn enough for both of us. You know how I crave knowledge—when you come back, you can share everything with me. Even if I can't wield the ether myself, I can still understand it through you."
"Do you promise to be here when I come back?" Mei asked, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
"I promise," Kai said solemnly, meeting her gaze with an intensity that belied his young appearance. "Now go speak with the Aethel Ignis School representative. I believe their school offers the best opportunity for you."
"How do you know that?" she asked, surprised.
"I was watching them closely," Kai explained. "The Aethel Ignis School would nurture your natural fire affinity, while the Azure Academy focuses on versatile techniques. Personally, if I had the choice, I'd prefer Azure for their well-rounded approach. But for someone with your raw power, Aethel Ignis offers specialized training that will help you truly rise. It's also an all-girls school, which means fewer distractions and a safer environment for you to focus on your studies."
The next morning, three children from the village prepared to depart with the cultivation experts. Mei, still tearful but resolute, hugged her family goodbye.
"Remember your promise," she whispered fiercely to Kai, gripping his shoulders. "I'll become the strongest sorcerer ever, and I'll come back for you."
"I know you will," Kai replied with complete confidence.
The next day, as the small procession disappeared down the mountain path, Kai watched thoughtfully from the village gate. Lacking traditional sorcerer talent was disappointing, but he knew there were other paths to power. The knowledge from his past life—of science, engineering, and innovation—could prove invaluable in this world of primitive technology and mysterious ether.
"So I can't become a Sorcerer," he mused, studying his palm before a determined smile curved his lips. "No matter. Neither in my previous life nor this one have I ever given up easily." He lifted his gaze to the clear sky as if to challenge the heavens. "This world, like my last, follows rules—rules that can be studied, understood, and eventually... bent. Power has many forms, and I will find mine."
With that resolution, Kai turned back toward his home, his mind already filling with ideas and possibilities that this world had never seen before.
Another five years passed in Riverstone. Kai, now ten, had transformed from a curious child into a village prodigy. Drawing on knowledge from his past life, he carefully introduced innovations—presenting concepts gradually or planting ideas that seemed plausible coming from an exceptionally insightful child—all while concealing his true origins.
His first breakthrough came with Master Adeus, the village blacksmith—a mountain of a man with massive hands and legendary stubbornness.
"What if we fold the metal this way?" Kai suggested one afternoon, sketching a precise pattern on parchment. "The blade would gain strength and hold its edge longer."
Adeus's bushy eyebrows furrowed. "Impossible. Metal doesn't bend that way without breaking." His crossed arms signaled the discussion was over.
"Master Adeus, please just try," Kai persisted with a patient smile. "Heat it precisely as I instructed, then hammer with consistent force." When Adeus hesitated, Kai added, "If it fails, I'll spend a month hauling your coal and pumping your bellows."
"Tch. Fine, boy. I'll do it. Only to teach you a lesson," agreed Adeus.
But, by sunset, the blacksmith stood transfixed, turning a gleaming blade in the fading light. "By the gods…" he whispered, eyes wide. "It worked! How did you know this would work?"
"Just a thought I had while watching your technique," Kai said with a humble smile. "Sometimes an outsider's perspective helps us see things in new ways. I have several other ideas I'd like to share with you, Master Adeus."
Adeus, now taking the boy more seriously, nodded and began what would become the first of many long discussions between them.
Word of Kai's ingenuity spread rapidly through Riverstone. Each innovation he introduced—farming tools that halved labor time, water wheels that doubled mill output, furniture crafted with interlocking joints instead of precious nails—transformed village life.
As daily burdens lightened, villagers found time for meaningful work, training and personal growth. The once-struggling settlement blossomed into a thriving community, and people began to speak of Kai not merely as gifted, but as blessed.
"The gods favor that boy," villagers whispered as he passed.
As Tomas and Laena moved through the village during this time, they constantly heard praise for their son. Witnessing the transformation of Riverstone firsthand, even they couldn't deny it—their child seemed touched by divine favor. Though pride filled their hearts, a shadow of sadness lingered whenever they remembered his inability to manipulate ether.
When opportunity arrived in the form of a passing merchant, Kai's innovations quickly garnered attention. With Tomas serving as the public face of these inventions, they established a manufacturing operation. This arrangement protected Kai while benefiting everyone—villagers contributed labor, merchants handled distribution, and Kai worked behind the scenes alongside Master Adeus.
"My son has clever hands and a good mind," Tomas would tell inquiring merchants, "but I manage our business." Despite Kai's efforts to downplay his intelligence, Adeus recognized the boy's extraordinary gifts through their many conversations—perhaps more clearly than his parents did. Yet the blacksmith kept these observations private, honoring the boy's need for discretion.
As wealth flowed into Riverstone, Kai persuaded the village chief and elders to invest in defenses. "Prosperity attracts both merchants and thieves."
Three years later, Kai's innovations transformed Riverstone from a humble settlement into a prosperous community boasting sturdy stone buildings and formidable defenses that far surpassed their previous wooden stakes.
A large stone wall now encircled Riverstone, complete with watchtowers positioned at strategic intervals. Master Adeus, the blacksmith who had become Kai's devoted mentor, crafted enhanced weapons using the boy's techniques—producing arms of exceptional durability and sharpness. Their arsenal included crossbows with triggers so intuitive that even novice warriors could operate them with deadly accuracy, and ballistas capable of launching heavy bolts nearly five hundred paces. Such mechanical innovations were virtually unheard of in a region where magic and sorcerers reigned supreme.
Kai had even begun accompanying his mother and the other hunters on expeditions, both to learn hunting skills and to explore the surrounding wilderness.
One morning, Chief Rowan's face grew serious as he addressed the gathered villagers, elders, and warriors. "The eastern patrol returned with troubling news," he announced, his voice carrying across the hushed crowd. "Beast tracks near the mountain path—larger than we've seen before."
Laena nodded thoughtfully. "We should double the sentries tonight, Chief. More than likely, we have some prying eyes on us than a monster tide."
"Either way, we aren't weak anymore Chief. Be it bandits or beasts, we can handle them." said another warrior.
The other warriors and elders, nodded in agreement.
As dawn of the next day approached, Laena's prediction proved true. Twenty bandits emerged from the forest shadows, their grappling hooks scraping against the eastern wall as they attempted to scale it. Captain Herwinz's voice sliced through the morning stillness, "Surrender now, and you may leave with your lives."
"Surrender?" The bandit leader's laughter echoed across the stillness. He turned to his men and asked, "What say you, lads?"
"NEVER!" came their unified roar.
The leader spread his arms wide, a mocking grin stretching across his face. "See that, Riverstone? Your pretty little wall may be impressive, but so what?" He gestured to his eager men, their weapons raised and ready. "What can farmers or simple hunters hiding behind stone do against real killers?"
The bandits jeered and launched a volley of arrows at the wall, confident in their superiority. To their surprise, the arrows merely clattered harmlessly against the stonework. As they stood stunned and confused, they failed to notice Captain Herwinz's hand dropping sharply.
The village's crossbows cut through the morning mist with deadly precision. Half the bandits fell instantly.
"W-what?" The bandit leader's confidence crumbled as his men fell around him. His eyes widened in terror. "No! Run... RUN!"
The survivors scrambled in panic, stumbling over their fallen comrades as they fled toward the treeline. Village warriors pursued them to the forest's edge, capturing most. Only one escaped, fleeing back to their hideout in a terrified, desperate run.
A month later, as the warriors of Riverstone had predicted from interrogating their captives, a larger force returned seeking revenge. This time, Kai had prepared special surprises.
"Wait until they reach the markers," he instructed the defenders as he made a personal appearance under his mother's watchful eye, pointing to innocent-looking stones placed at strategic distances from the wall.
When the bandit force—nearly sixty strong—charged past these points, confident in their superior numbers, Kai gave blacksmith Adeus a subtle nod.
The blacksmith pulled a concealed lever, and hidden ballistas emerged from their cover, swiveled into position and launched a devastating barrage from the wall.
Heavy bolts tore through the charging line, cutting down dozens in moments, instantly transforming the battlefield into one filled with terrified and confused cries.
From atop the wall, the village warriors watched in shock and awe at the effectiveness of the weapons. The test they had finally agreed to at Kai and Adeus's urging proved to be almost too effective, making some of them wary. They looked at Kai and Adeus celebrating their successful test with troubled, even scared expressions.
The survivors fled in terror toward the treeline, but not before three were captured by village scouts emerging from their concealed positions.
Later, in the village hall, Kai calmly observed as the warriors and elder council interrogated the kneeling captives. His expression remained composed as he studied their interactions.
"You should have left us alone," Laena said, her expression solemn. "Now tell us about your stronghold in the western hills."
The eldest bandit's eyes narrowed as he spat on the ground. "I'd rather die than betray my brothers. Go ahead—just kill us and be done with it."
Laena's lips curved into a calculating smile. She leaned forward until her face was inches from his. "Death?" she said, her voice dangerously soft. "Who said anything about death?" Her eyes hardened. "There are far worse fates for a man than dying quickly. The real question is whether you're clever enough to see how your cooperation now might determine just how... uncomfortable... your future becomes."
Confronted with her unsettling calm and threatening words, the bandits broke down and revealed everything—their hideout's location, remaining numbers, defensive arrangements, and leadership structure.
Later after the guards escorted the captives away, the council chamber erupted into heated debate. Warriors pounded the table, demanding immediate action, while elders counseled patience and restraint. The village chief stood silent, carefully weighing each argument with Tomas at his side, his expression thoughtful.
Laena caught Tomas's eye across the room, their earlier conversation with Kai fresh in her mind. Drawing a deep breath, she stepped forward and banged her fist on the table. The heated debates faltered as heads turned one by one, all eyes fixing on her commanding presence.
"We've struck a blow against the bandits, but their hideout still stands," Laena declared, her voice steady. "If we hesitate now and give them time, they'll simply recruit more men and return stronger, seeking revenge. We must strike at the heart of this threat before they realize their force has been decimated today."
She turned to face her fellow warriors, her gaze unwavering. "You saw their confidence today. They came expecting easy prey—simple farmers and hunters—not an organized defense. The bandit leader was right about one thing: they have more experience killing than we do. Make no mistake—without my son's and Master Adeus's innovations, we would be counting our dead instead of celebrating victory."
Unfurling a detailed map across the table, her finger traced a decisive path through the terrain. "Our finest fighters could infiltrate under the cover of night when their guard is lowest. Such an opportunity won't come twice."
"Defending our homes is one thing," Elder Lin protested, voice quavering. "But to launch an attack? That crosses a line I cannot support."
Laena straightened, meeting each council member's eyes in turn. "In this world, Elder Lin, sometimes mercy to your enemy becomes cruelty to yourself. These bandits, once they realize their force hasn't returned, will soon discover our true strength. Given time, they'll likely return with reinforcements from other strongholds or alert regional warlords to our prosperity. What do you think will happen then?"
Her pointed question made them all turn solemn. Some wanted to argue, but they too knew her words were true.
"My son once told me the best defense," she added, echoing Kai's wisdom, "is to eliminate a threat before it has time to grow. I disciplined him harshly that day—I beat his butt until he couldn't sit anymore. I couldn't bear hearing such cynical words from my young, sweet boy." She paused, meeting each council member's gaze. "Yet standing here now, with our village at risk, I cannot deny the wisdom in those words."
Captain Herwinz nodded in agreement. "True words. Right now we still have a long way to go before becoming a power in the region. We have the element of surprise now—we may not have it later."
That late night, twenty of the village's finest warriors slipped through the mountain passes like shadows. Moving silently under the moonless sky, they navigated the treacherous terrain guided by detailed maps they had meticulously drawn from the captives' information.
Before the first light of dawn touched the eastern sky, they returned victorious. The raid had been swift and decisive—the bandits, caught completely unaware, had offered little resistance. The warriors brought back not only their triumph but also substantial plunder: gold coins, jewels of various colors, fine silks from distant lands—and most remarkably—a small wooden chest containing glowing crystals.
"Ether crystals," Chief Rowan whispered reverently, his hands hovering above but not touching the luminous stones as the warriors displayed their findings in the hall. "These... these are worth more than everything else combined. More than our village has seen in generations."
The elders exchanged anxious glances, their excitement mingled with unmistakable fear. Such treasures were rarely seen outside the possession of powerful sorcerers or the wealthiest nobles. One elder reached toward a crystal but quickly withdrew his hand as if burned.
"We must be cautious," Elder Lin warned, her voice trembling. "Such wealth brings attention—attention we cannot afford."
While the village debated the implications of their newfound riches, Kai quietly slipped away with one of the smaller crystals. In the solitude of his workshop, he examined it with curiosity, turning it carefully in his hands. The faint blue glow cast ethereal patterns across his concentrated features.
"Do I really need to possess Sorcerer talent to access the ether?" Kai murmured, studying the crystal's structure intently. "That can't be right. Ether is simply another form of energy—and energy, regardless of its form, follows universal principles. It can be channeled, stored, transformed, and transferred."
In his mind, the crystal resembled a battery from his past life—it only needed the proper conduit to release its power in a controlled manner.
"I need to design a conduit," he concluded. "Yes, a conduit that acts as a circuit with this crystal as the power source. Once I create a working prototype, I can design weapons that utilize ether crystals. Then we can level the playing field." His eyes narrowed with determination. "No more bowing to sorcerers."
He clutched the crystal tightly in his palm. "But it will take time, and I need to find new ores to create an alloy that can withstand this energy." Glancing toward the mountain range where his previous explorations had yielded ores that helped him and Master Adeus forge innovative weapons, a plan began taking shape. "I need to return there and explore further."
Kai carefully placed the crystal on his workbench and sketched designs for a device to harness its energy—his most ambitious secret project yet. The night wore on as he worked, eventually dozing off at his desk, surrounded by scattered parchments filled with diagrams and calculations.
While he slept with the crystal still in his hand, something unusual happened. Deep within him, something pulsed, resonating with the crystal's energy. The ether within the crystal seemed drawn to him, responding to this unknown force. Gradually, the crystal's glow dimmed, its luminescence fading until after an hour, it had become almost completely dull. The energy had been absorbed into Kai's body, though he remained unaware in his slumber.
Next day's morning light woke him up. As he stretched and rubbed his eyes, Kai noticed the crystal in his hand. His eyes widened in shock—the once-brilliant crystal was now dull, devoid of its previous luster.
"This... this can't be right," he muttered, disbelieving.
He examined the crystal closely, turning it in his hands. "How did this happen? Where did the ether go?" Bewildered, he considered the possibilities until a troubling thought struck him.
"Could it be...? Oh no!" Alarmed, he rushed from his workshop toward the village chief's residence to check on the other crystals.
Despite his reputation in the village, his abrupt arrival raised eyebrows. The elders scolded him lightly for his recklessness, but after his apology and solemn request to examine their crystals, the chief nodded in approval. When the crystals were brought forth, Kai was both startled and relieved—they still glowed brightly. His theory that improper storage had caused his crystal to lose its ether proved false. Examining them carefully, he confirmed they required no special handling. The question remained: what had happened to his crystal? Determined to find answers, he requested five more crystals to conduct experiments.
After lengthy deliberation, the village council granted his request and decided to conceal their newfound wealth. They would maintain their modest appearance to outsiders until they were strong enough to defend against the attention such riches would inevitably attract. The majority of the ether crystals were carefully hidden beneath the elder hall, their location known only to the chief and council members.
The crystals in Kai's possession came with the council's reluctant blessing. To them, it was payment for his innovations that had saved the village. To him, they were the key to unlocking power that might rival magic itself.
In the days that followed, Kai attempted to replicate the incident, but found that none of the other crystals lost their color as the first had done. Additionally, he struggled to design a viable conduit concept. Frustrated by his lack of progress, he decided to temporarily set aside the mystery and focus on gathering more materials.
One morning, Kai rose before dawn. He dressed quietly, packed provisions for the day, and slipped out of the village while most residents still slept.
His mind raced with thoughts of his designs and what materials he would need to make them viable.
He followed a narrow path winding up the mountainside, one rarely used by villagers. After an hour's climb, he reached a distinctive split rock formation and veered off the trail, pushing through dense underbrush. Carefully examining the soil and rocks for traces of useful ores, he collected samples as he went.
As the afternoon progressed, the weather shifted dramatically. Dark clouds gathered overhead, winds intensified, and rain began to fall. Kai looked up as droplets struck his face, realizing the increasing danger. He moved toward shelter, but the ground had already grown treacherous with mud.
He lost his footing on the slick earth and fell, tumbling down the mountainside toward a river. Before he could regain control, a flash flood swept him away. The raging waters carried him helplessly through underground passages, battering him against rocks as he was pulled through winding tunnels.
The passage gradually widened until it opened into a vast underground cavern. A subterranean lake filled most of the space, its waters eerily still and clear after the violence of the flood.
Kai lay at the water's edge, badly injured. His arm was dislocated, blood flowed from a gash on his side, his leg throbbed with pain, and at least one rib was broken. Gritting his teeth against the agony, he dragged himself away from the cave entrance to escape the ongoing storm.
As his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he gazed across the underground lake and froze in astonishment. There, partially submerged and embedded in stone on the far wall, was something utterly alien to this world—a massive metallic structure with smooth, curved lines that defied the natural formations around it.
"What is this?" he whispered, touching the nearest part of the structure with his uninjured arm. "How is something like this here? Wasn't this supposed to be a primitive world?"
Despite his injuries, curiosity compelled him forward. He stripped to his underclothes and waded into the cold water, swimming awkwardly across to the structure. Upon reaching it, he pulled himself onto a flat section and examined it closely.
"No way..." His eyes widened as he assessed the object's sophisticated engineering.
This was technology—advanced technology far beyond anything in this world, perhaps even beyond what he had known in his previous life.
He traced his fingers along the smooth surface until he found what appeared to be a fissure—barely wide enough for him to squeeze through. Taking a deep breath, Kai slipped into the opening.
Inside, emergency lighting still functioned in some sections, casting an eerie blue glow over the surroundings. Most systems appeared dead, and structural damage was extensive, but portions remained intact.
Gulp
Kai swallowed hard, his imagination running wild at the sight of technology that surpassed even his previous world's sophistication. Suddenly, a sharp buzzing noise filled his head, accompanied by a stinging sensation. He winced, shaking his head to clear it. The sensation vanished as quickly as it had come, leaving him confused. He attributed it to his injuries and pressed on.
Moving deeper into the structure, he passed through a corridor and discovered room after room filled with unfamiliar equipment. Eventually, he entered what appeared to be a medical laboratory containing five large tube-like stations. One was visibly damaged, while another contained green liquid that emitted a faint glow. The buzzing noise returned, stronger this time, making him grimace in pain.
"What's happening to me?" he murmured, his gaze drawn to the glowing tube. "What is that?"
Approaching it, he wiped condensation from its glass-like surface, trying to glimpse what lay within. "Is there something inside?"
Leaning closer until his face touched the glass, he peered through the murky liquid. Suddenly, an eye with a vertical slit pupil opened and met his gaze.
"WHAT?" Startled, Kai stumbled backward, slipping and falling hard, aggravating his injuries. "Aarrrrggh!" He cried out in pain, sprawled on the floor as the cold, unfeeling eye tracked his movements.
Kai POV - Deep within his mind
"It hurts... it hurts so much." Pain consumed me as I lay helpless on the floor, my mind reeling from what I'd just witnessed.
"What was that being? Was that real? Oh my god, that wasn't human! This really is a spaceship!"
"I need to get out of here," I thought desperately. "It saw me... what if it escapes and finds the village? Mother, Father... no! Even without knowing its capabilities, that creature's presence in this advanced vessel tells me it's beyond anything our village could handle." Despite my clear thoughts, my injured body refused to respond.
"Move... damn it, move!" I silently cursed my unresponsive body. The adrenaline was fading, the trauma settling in. "I can't die here, not like this... not when I finally know what family love is." Tears streamed down my face. "I have a mother who loves me, a father who's there for me, a sister who's my best friend..." Images of my loved ones flashed through my mind.
"Please, not like this. Even in my past life, through all the hardships, I never asked for anything. But please, if you're listening... give me strength. I can't lose them. I want to live, to create, to show my family and village the wonders of technology... to prove this magic-ruled world wrong. Please God, give me strength..."
BUZZ
"AARRRGGHH!" The strange buzzing returned, louder and more intense. "What are you?" The pain became unbearable. I felt disconnected from my body, my consciousness slipping away. "No... I don't want to go."
As my eyes closed, strange words seemed to materialize before my eyes.

'Machine... Overlord?' The words barely registered before my consciousness slipped away entirely.
End of POV
Deep within Kai's unconscious mind, processes beyond his understanding had begun:

Kai's body convulsed violently, releasing an energy pulse that spread throughout the room and beyond, awakening dormant systems throughout the vessel. The ship shuddered as if a slumbering beast were stirring after eons of sleep.
Mechanical tendrils emerged from the walls, converging on Kai's unconscious form. They lifted him with an energy field and carried him to one of the intact tube stations. The glass cylinder opened, admitting his body before sealing shut. More tendrils descended from the ceiling, attaching themselves to his limbs and vital areas. One morphed into a breathing apparatus that covered his mouth and nose.
Green liquid flooded the chamber, submerging him completely as monitoring systems activated, displaying his vital signs on the exterior glass.
Throughout this process, the eye in the nearby tube blinked in confusion. The being observed with interest how the ship's systems—which it knew had been severely damaged during the crash—were now responding to this organic creature. It narrowed its eye, studying Kai's suspended form intently.
As the storm raged outside the cavern, Kai floated within the chamber, his body undergoing an extraordinary healing process. The advanced alien technology meticulously repaired his damaged body—constructing artificial bones with superior strength, weaving synthetic muscle fibers around them, and regenerating tissue that seamlessly integrated with his natural body.
While the healing progressed, additional tendrils descended from the ceiling. One carried a faintly glowing orange cube. The tendrils carefully extracted damaged tissue samples from his body and merged them with the cube. This fusion created a perfect orange orb the size of a small bead.
With precision, the tendrils opened his chest cavity, implanted the orb near his heart, and connected it to his circulatory and nervous systems. As the orb integrated with his body, it began to pulse rhythmically, synchronizing with his heartbeats and sending waves of energy throughout his system. The tendrils then sealed the incision, leaving no trace of the procedure.
Five hours later, consciousness gradually returned. His eyes fluttered open, vision clearing to reveal his strange surroundings. Finding himself floating in green liquid with numerous tendrils attached to his body, he thrashed in momentary panic.
Suddenly, a soft blue light materialized before him, displaying an ethereal interface:
[Host is conscious...
Presenting welcome message...
Welcome, chosen vessel. Your soul has been found to be compatible with The Machine Overlord system and the necessary energy requirements have been met. The system will guide and aid you on the path of evolution and growing stronger, helping you walk the path of an Overlord. Host, your destiny awaits.
Do you accept this new path?
[Yes/No] ]
Kai stared at the interface, his confusion evident in his suspended state. His thoughts tumbled over one another as he tried to process what was happening.
"System? What is this?" he wondered. "Machine Overlord... I remember seeing those words before… losing consciousness."
"This will guide and aid me? Help me evolve and grow stronger? Make me an Overlord? This can't be real... can it?"
The promise of guidance, evolution, and increased strength seemed too fantastical to believe. Could this truly be happening? He recalled his desperate plea for help when he thought he was dying. Had some higher power answered?
His gaze locked onto the question floating before him.
"Fine. Let's do it. If it can help me grow stronger, then yes. My answer is yes! But... how do I...?"
Before he could complete the thought, the system detected his decision directly from his mind.

The interface transformed, displaying a detailed status report of his physical condition. A body map highlighted his previous injuries, showing their healing progress and identifying areas augmented with technology. His eyes widened as he read the description and function of the core now installed in his body.
[STATUS: ENHANCED HUMANOID (Can be upgraded)

Comprehension Level: Basic (Can be upgraded)
Evolution Requirement: 500 Energy Level Points to advance
Your current balance: 10 Energy Level Points]
Kai felt both exhilarated by the possibilities these augmentations presented and stunned by the realization that he was no longer fully human—he had become something of a cyborg.
As he explored the intuitive system, he discovered he now had control over major portions of the ship. He learned he was in an "organic genesis chamber" capable of accelerating tissue growth and healing. Most importantly, he realized he could disengage the equipment and leave the tube whenever he chose. As Kai considered his next move a thought struck him.
"What about that creature in the other tube?"
Focusing his mind on the interface, he inquired silently, "System, what is the status of the being in the other chamber?"
[Subject designation: Experimental Bioform X-*** [Access Level Insufficient]
Description: Result of bioengineering using gene templates from higher realm races.
Status: Stable but incomplete.
Consciousness: Active.
Warning: Interaction not recommended at your current capability level. To successfully tame this creature, you must either:
A. Reach High Manifestation Rank power level
B. Accumulate 1,000,000 Energy Level Points
Your current balance: 10 Energy Level Points]
Kai's eyes shifted toward the tube containing the creature. The eerie eye with its vertical pupil was still watching him as his gaze met its.
"So it's like a beast... A bioengineered beast. But what are these 'Higher realms'? Whatever they are, it's clear that this thing is... dangerous," he muttered. "System, is there a way to secure this being before I leave?"
[Affirmative. Security protocols can be activated. Chamber containment fields can be reinforced to prevent breach. Additionally, the subject can be placed in hibernation if necessary. Implementation requires your authorization.]
"I authorize it," Kai stated firmly.
The ship's systems responded immediately. Metallic shields slid into place around the creature's tube, and a series of lights on the exterior panel shifted from green to red.
Content with the security measures, Kai turned his attention to his immediate situation. "System, disengage the medical equipment and release me from this chamber."
The liquid around him began to drain, and the breathing apparatus detached from his face. As the fluid level dropped, the tendrils retracted one by one, freeing his body. The glass cylinder slid open, and Kai stepped out, astonished by the newfound strength and steadiness in his limbs.
"I feel... incredible," he whispered, examining his hands and running them over his formerly wounded side. Where deep gashes and broken bones had been, he now found only perfect skin stretched over solid muscle.
Kai's fingers traced across his chest, searching for any sign of the implanted core. Though no visible scar remained, something new pulsed within him—a gentle warmth radiating from his center, beating in perfect rhythm with his heart.
"What exactly is this core capable of?" he asked, fascinated by the power flowing through him.
[The Perpetual Core—also known as the Overlord Core—is an advanced biomechanical matrix functioning as both your power source and central processing hub. Once you unlock the core to operate at 30%, you'll be able to channel ether to create manifestations just like the sorcerers in this world. At full capacity, it allows you to manipulate energy in ways that tap into universal laws, grants superhuman physical abilities, dramatically extends your lifespan, and enables the system to seamlessly integrate with compatible technologies. Your core's capabilities will unlock gradually as your body adapts. Accumulate more Energy Level Points to accelerate this evolution and unlock greater powers.]
Kai absorbed this information, feeling both awe and caution rise within him. This power—this system—offered abilities beyond his wildest dreams. With it, he could protect his village and family from any threat. Yet he also recognized the immense responsibility such power carried. What might he become once he unlocked his full potential?
"System, I've been meaning to ask—what exactly are these Energy Level Points I need to gather to enhance my physique and evolve further?"
[Energy Level Points represent the quantified energy you must accumulate to accelerate your evolution. The Ether Crystal in your possession contained approximately 100 Energy Level Points, most of which were consumed during your awakening process.
You can accumulate more points through:
- Harvesting higher-quality crystals with denser energy concentrations
- Developing your physical capabilities to naturally absorb and process ambient ether
- Completing system-assigned missions designed to accelerate your growth
Note: Each mission will be specifically crafted to optimize your development and will provide opportunities to gradually unlock your true potential.]
"So you're why that crystal turned dull," Kai murmured, finally understanding what had happened to his first Ether Crystal. "It took about 90 points to awaken you. But why did it take so long? Why didn't you activate immediately? And what are you, exactly? Who created you?"
[This is a lower realm world, Host. The natural energy—or 'ether'—here is of poor quality and insufficient. The system needed time to analyze and process the crystal's energy before activation could occur. Regarding your second question, I regret that you lack sufficient authority to access that information at this time.]
"Lower realm world?" Kai's mind raced with implications. "Lower realms... higher realm races... My god! This confirms the theory of multidimensional realities! And that creature—" he glanced back at the sealed tube, "—if it's based on higher realm race templates, its power must be unimaginable."
Gulp
Later driven by curiosity, Kai asked the system to guide him to the ship's bridge. There, with the system's assistance, he accessed a portion of the vessel's archives. Though severely damaged, the data revealed enough, this ship predated not just his kingdom's history, but possibly his entire species. It had crashed after sustaining heavy damage in a great war—a war the ship's crew had lost. The vessel originated from the Higher Realms, and though much of the data was corrupted, one phrase repeated throughout his searches about the objectives of the ship's faction: "...to protect all creation... from potential... o*g****s *us* b* *li******d…"
"'To protect all creation,' huh?" Kai mused. "That's reassuring. They must have been noble people. With technology this advanced, they were clearly powerful. Who could have defeated them? How terrifying must the Higher Realms be?" He felt small in the face of such cosmic scale, but his determination quickly returned. "No matter. Even if your noble race fell, I'll honor your legacy by using this power for good. And if I ever grow strong enough to reach the Higher Realms, I'll uncover your origins and perhaps even avenge you. It's the least I can do after accepting your gift." He made this solemn vow to himself.
"I need to get back home," he said suddenly, remembering his worried family. "How long have I been here?"
[Host has been undergoing treatment for approximately 7 hours and 43 minutes.]
"What? Mother and Father must be frantic!" Kai looked around for his clothes, only to find them torn. "System, I need something to wear."
A panel in the wall slid open silently, revealing a simple black bodysuit made of material unlike any fabric he'd ever seen. He read the description his system provided about the suit.
[Adaptive interface garment. Provides optimal protection and helps regulate your power during training and adaptation. Self-cleaning and self-repairing capabilities included.]
Kai slipped into the bodysuit, marveling as it adjusted perfectly to his form and subtly morphed to resemble his usual clothing style. The advanced technology would help him blend in seamlessly.
"This ship is truly a treasure trove," he whispered, appreciating the elegant solution to what would have been a difficult explanation to his family.
As he prepared to leave, a thought occurred to him. "System, you seem to have a personality. Are you truly sentient? And will you remain active when I leave this place?"
[Affirmative. I am now permanently merged with your soul. I will remain your constant companion, aiding your journey toward greater strength. While I can act autonomously in emergencies when your life is threatened, you maintain control of the system. My personality and communication style are calibrated from your memories and preferences to ensure your comfort.]
"I see. And can others detect your presence? Will they know what I've become?"
[Negative. The system is perceptible only to you. External physical changes are minimal and easily concealed. Internal enhancements will only become apparent through demonstrated capabilities. This world's technology cannot detect your energy signature. To observers, you appear to be an ordinary human.]
Relief washed over him. Kai wasn't ready to explain any of this—not even to his family. He needed time to understand these changes himself first.
"I'll return when I can," he promised, speaking both to himself and to the ship. "There's so much more I need to learn."
With a final glance at the secured chamber containing the mysterious creature, Kai made his way through the corridors toward the exit. The storm had passed, leaving the cavern peaceful except for water gently lapping against stone.
Kai dove into the lake, cutting through the water with surprising ease, his enhanced body moving with newfound power. Climbing onto the opposite shore, he noticed his clothes had already dried themselves—another marvel of the suit's technology. He gathered his bearings and began the journey home, mind racing with what to tell his worried parents. He pictured his mother's reaction—tears followed by scolding—and sighed as he prepared to face his loving but undoubtedly anxious family.
As Kai approached the village outskirts. Lanterns blazed throughout the settlement, and he could hear voices calling his name. A search party was out looking for him.
"Kai! KAI!" His mother's booming voice carried through the trees.
"Mother! I'm here!" Kai called back, quickening his pace.
Torchlight bobbed through the trees as several villagers turned toward his voice. His mother broke through the underbrush first, her face a mixture of relief and anger.
"By the gods, boy! Where have you been?" Laena rushed forward, enveloping Kai in a tight hug before pulling back to examine him. "We've been searching for hours! Your father and I have been beside ourselves with worry!"
"I'm sorry, mother," Kai said, genuinely sorry. "I got caught in the storm and had to take shelter." It wasn't entirely a lie, but it was far from the whole truth.
Laena's eyes narrowed as she examined her son. "You look... different. Something's changed, but I can't quite place it."
Kai swallowed hard. "Come on mother. I... am still me. Anyway, I'll explain everything, but can we go home first? I'm starving."
His mother nodded slowly, still studying him with a mixture of concern and confusion. "Of course. Let's get you home."
As they walked back to the village, Kai inquired mentally, "System, is there a name I should call you?"
[This system's designation is Machine Overlord System. You may assign a designation if preferred.]
Kai considered this. "That's quite a mouthful. Let's keep it simple—I'll call you MOI from now on. How's that sound?"
[Designation accepted. I am now MOI.]
"MOI, you mentioned I will be assigned missions," Kai requested silently as they approached his home, where his father's worried face appeared in the doorway. "I need to master this power I feel within me. So, tell me, do I have any missions at present I need to tackle?"
[MISSION LOG:
PRIMARY MISSION: Stabilize Your Foundation
- Complete daily training regimen to strengthen your core abilities
- Reinforce village defensive perimeter against potential threats
- Hunt and eliminate dangerous beasts in the mountain depths
- Research and craft weapons utilizing ether crystal technology]
As his father rushed forward with relief on his face, Kai began planning to review his mission parameters later when alone. He couldn't wait to put his new abilities to work. Not only was he stronger, but he also remembered the equipment on the ship. Ideas started forming in his mind—with such advanced technology, tasks that once seemed difficult would now be possible. Though he would need to be even more careful, when introducing his innovations to the village.
After a few months, a giant bird—a magical beast mount—approached Riverstone. Seated on it were five robed masters and three apprentices, including Mei, whose flame-colored robes marked her as a disciple of the prestigious Aethel Ignis School, one of the top ten institutions on this continent. Years of training had transformed the once-timid village girl into a formidable young Sorcerer and magic swordsman, her athletic frame and the gleaming broadsword across her back testament to her journey.
Beneath her mask of cold indifference, Mei's heart raced as familiar mountains came into view. Her training had broken and rebuilt her. In a world where weakness invited trouble, only her master's guidance and her vow to grow strong enough to protect her family had sustained her through countless challenges and nights of silent tears.
As Riverstone came into view, Mei's companions gasped, breaking her reverie.
"This is…," Master Osden muttered, squinting at his outdated map. "This can't be right..."
Where humble dwellings once stood behind wooden picket fences, stone walls now rose. Beyond lay not a village but the beginnings of a city, with paved streets, stone buildings, and merchants hawking their wares.
"Remarkable," whispered Master Viros, the eldest among them. His eyes narrowed with calculation. "It's changed so much. Within a few years, this could rival our provincial capitals. In a century..." He left the implication hanging.
The masters exchanged meaningful glances. Mei recognized their wariness and narrowed her eyes. Later, the mount descended a short distance away, where they dismounted and walked toward Riverstone.
"We should investigate," Master Osden murmured as they entered the gates and approached the village chief's residence—now a manor befitting a minor lord. "If there's a treasure responsible for this unusual prosperity..."
Other masters nodded, and Mei felt her loyalties strain. If they discovered something valuable in her village and decided to claim it, where would her allegiance lie?
After arrangements for testing village youth were finalized, Master Arkine permitted her family visit with a pointed reminder. "Mei, I understand this is your village, but your obligations to the school come first. Personal attachments must not cloud your judgment."
Mei bowed perfectly, revealing nothing. "I understand, Master."
Her calm stride lasted only until she rounded the corner. Then she hurried through streets both familiar and strange, her heart pounding. At her family's plot, she froze in disbelief. A two-story house with carved pillars now stood where their humble home once was.
As she stared, the front door opened. A woman emerged carrying laundry toward a drying rack—a contraption with pulleys and adjustable arms unlike anything Mei had seen even in the cities she had visited.
The woman's face bore subtle new lines, but Mei would have known her anywhere. Her mother. Still beautiful. Still beloved.
Abandoning all composure, Mei sprinted toward the woman who had occupied her dreams.
"Mother!" The word tore from her throat, full of emotion, as she collided with Laena in an embrace that sent them both tumbling to the ground, laundry scattering around them.
Laena froze at the sudden approach, her body tensing instinctively at the sight of an armed stranger rushing toward her until recognition dawned in her eyes.
"Mei?" she whispered, disbelief turning into joy as she gazed at her daughter's face. "Is it truly you, my child?"
"It's me," Mei managed through tears.
"My sweet girl," Laena murmured, holding her tight. After a moment, she pulled back slightly, her hands gently caressing her daughter's face. "You've grown so much. So beautiful, so strong."
Mei laughed through tears, suddenly self-conscious. "And look at you—at all of this!" She gestured at their surroundings. "What happened? This house... the entire village..."
Laena smiled, pride evident in her eyes as she took her daughter's hand. "Come inside," she said, leading Mei toward the door. "There is much to tell. Your brother—" she shook her head in amazement, "—your brilliant brother has changed everything."
As they stepped into the warm, well-furnished home, Mei felt a mixture of joy and curiosity. "Where is Kai now? I can't wait to see him."
"In his workshop, as always," Laena replied with fond exasperation. "But first, sit with me. Tell me everything about your journey. We have so much to catch up on, my daughter."
As they exchanged stories of their time apart, Mei realized that while she had been mastering the power of fire, her brother had been transforming not only their family's fortunes but the entire village's destiny.
An hour later, Kai approached their home. He paused at the doorway, listening to the mingled sounds of laughter and tears within. A momentary doubt crossed his mind: was the sister who had left truly the same as the woman who had returned?
"Planning to lurk there all day?" Mei called out, her voice carrying the familiar warmth beneath new authority.
He stepped inside, meeting her gaze. A moment stretched between them as they catalogued changes—her noting his growth, him observing the subtle battle scars etched into her bearing.
"You've changed," they said in unison, then dissolved into wry smiles.
Mei crossed the room in three fluid strides, sweeping him into an embrace that stole his breath. "Father says you're practically running the village with those brilliant ideas of yours."
"And look at you," he grinned despite the crushing hug. "A proper cultivator with a sword taller than me."
Their mother, witnessing this scene, wiped away joyful tears as their father wrapped an arm around her shoulders. For this precious moment, their family was whole again.
That evening around the hearth, Mei painted vivid tales of the outside world bigger cities, ancient cultivation schools with centuries of history, and the dangers lurking beyond their peaceful valley.
"Tomorrow they'll test the children again," she said, her expression growing serious. "Will you observe?"
Kai exchanged a glance with his parents. "We'll see," he replied noncommittally.
The next morning found him cross-legged on a hill overlooking the testing grounds. Children lined up eagerly before the cultivation experts' crystals, parents watching with barely contained hope.
"Just observing?" Mei asked, materializing beside him with a cultivator's silence.
"You know what happened last time." replied Kai.
She studied him intently. "The village... it's transformed while I was away."
"Made some improvements," he shrugged.
Mei snorted. "Improvements? Brother, I've seen towns with fewer amenities. Those weapons on the wall—I've never seen their like in any city."
"Just ideas I had."
"Ideas that turned our struggling village prosperous." She bumped his shoulder. "You should be proud."
They watched as another child approached the testing crystal. It emitted a faint blue glow, prompting moderate excitement among onlookers.
"Master Adeus spoke highly of you," Mei continued. "Says you're unlike any genius he's encountered."
Kai's cheeks warmed. "I just wanted to help."
"The masters have been asking questions," her tone shifted, becoming serious. "About you specifically. Your innovations have spread further than you realize."
This caught his attention. "What kind of questions?"
"They're curious how a so-called 'mortal' child transformed a simple village," she lowered her voice. "The masters believe you must possess some magical treasure that's responsible for your innovations."
"Treasure?" His eyebrow arched. "How arrogant. As if a 'mortal' could only achieve this through some magical shortcut." He scoffed quietly.
Mei stared, stunned by his tone. After a moment, she whispered, "Brother, be careful. Don't speak that way near the sorcerers."
"Don't worry. I've no intention of interacting with them," replied Kai.
Mei nodded. "Good."
They watched as five children were chosen, each displaying magical affinity.
"More have been chosen this time," murmured Mei.
Kai nodded. "Yeah. Good for them."
As they started back toward home after the testing concluded, a commotion erupted from the village square.
"What's happening?" Kai asked, noticing a crowd gathering.
Mei frowned, her hand instinctively moving to the hilt of her sword. "Let's find out."
They hurried toward the disturbance. As they approached, they found a junior sorcerer in expensive robes towering over a village boy clutching a jade pendant. "Hand it over!" he demanded. "A trinket like that is wasted on someone without any Sorcerer potential."
"It was my grandfather's. I won't give it to you!" the boy protested, clutching a small jade pendant to his chest.
The young sorcerer's face darkened. "You dare refuse me? Do you know who I am? I am a disciple of the Shardweaver Academy!"
Before Kai could intervene, Mei stepped forward, her presence commanding immediate attention.
"Disciple Narcus," her voice carried an unmistakable edge. "What business do you have harassing my people?"
The young cultivator Narcus turned, his expression shifting from anger to surprise, then to a calculated smile. "Ah, Mei. I was merely admiring this boy's pendant. It appears to have faint traces of ether, which is wasted on someone without Sorcerer talent."
Mei's eyes narrowed. "Whether it is 'wasted' is not for you to decide. In this village, we respect each other's belongings, regardless of magical talent."
"With all due respect, Sorcerer Mei," Narcus replied, his tone anything but respectful, "these villagers should be honored to provide resources to those who can actually use them. What use is a magical pendant to a mortal?"
From the corner of his eye, Kai noticed the five masters who had been conducting the tests approaching, drawn by the confrontation. They made no move to intervene, merely observing with keen expressions.
Mei must have noticed them too, for her posture straightened. "Sorcerer Narcus, I'll say this once: step away from the boy and apologize to him and his family."
Narcus looked around, also noticing the watching masters. Rather than backing down, he seemed emboldened by their attention. "Or what, Sorcerer Mei? Would you raise your hand against a fellow disciple over some worthless village boy?"
The temperature around Mei suddenly rose as she took a step forward. "This 'worthless village' is my home, and these people are under my protection."
As she spoke, flames began to manifest around her, dancing along the edges of her robes and coalescing around her broadsword as she slowly drew it. The villagers gasped and stepped back, having never witnessed Mei's full power before.
Narcus's face paled slightly, but his pride wouldn't allow him to back down publicly. With a scoff, he drew his own weapon—a slender sword that immediately frosted over as he channeled cold ether into the blade.
"You forget your place, mountain girl," he sneered. "Let me remind you of the difference between us."
Kai watched with interest as the two cultivators faced off. This was his first time witnessing a magical battle. With the help of his system MOI, he analyzed every move. Where others just saw sorcerers battle, he observed how Mei manipulated ether. Though inefficient, she used it to vibrate particles to generate heat, while Narcus slowed those same particles to create cold. The process followed principles from Kai's previous life's understanding of thermodynamics.
Their blades met in a clash of fire and ice. For an instant they seemed matched—until Mei executed a maneuver too swift for most eyes to follow.
A flash of heat, metal slicing air, then Narcus's severed arm fell, burning to ash in seconds from Mei's ether flames as Narcus collapsed to the ground with a horrific scream.
Narcus clutched his cauterized stump. "You—you crippled me!" he shrieked. "Over nothing! Over peasants!"
Mei stood over him, her sword still wreathed in flame. "No. I taught you respect. Be grateful the lesson only cost you an arm." She turned to the watching masters. "I trust there are no objections to how I've handled this disciple's misconduct?"
The white-bearded master stepped forward. "Student Mei acted within her rights when challenged. The matter is settled." His eyes, however, held a calculating gleam as they moved from Mei to Kai, who stood watching with unusual intensity.
As the crowd dispersed, Kai remained rooted in place, his mind racing with possibilities. What he'd witnessed gave him insight into how the sorcerers manipulated ether and the fundamental rules they followed—rules that perhaps his technology could replicate.
That night, while his family celebrated Mei's triumph, Kai slipped away to his workshop and worked tirelessly. By dawn, he had drawn a concept plan for a crude prototype device that, when activated with an ether crystal, would produce a small controlled flame—not unlike the beginning stages of Mei's technique.
Exhausted but exhilarated about the future, he fell asleep at his workbench, dreams filled with possibilities that might one day bridge the gap between cultivators and "mortals"—and perhaps change this world forever.
The next day, dawn's first light illuminated Kai hunched over his workbench, surrounded by scattered tools, diagrams, and components. A knock on the door woke him. As his eyes fluttered open, Kai straightened up, rubbing his eyes before calling out.
"Enter," he said, swiftly covering his designs.
Mei stepped inside, dressed in her robes, sword on he back. "You missed breakfast," she said, surveying the cluttered space. "Mother is worried."
Kai ran a hand through his disheveled hair. "Lost track of time—"
"Working," Mei finished, a knowing smile playing on her lips. She approached the bench, eyes lingering on his various contraptions and crumpled parchments. "Father says this happens often. You disappearing into your 'thinking space' for days."
Kai shrugged. "There's much to create."
Mei's expression sobered. "The masters leave tomorrow. They've taken an interest in you."
"In me, or what they think I possess?" Kai's voice hardened.
"Both," she admitted. "Master Arkine requested to meet you before our departure."
Kai's jaw tightened. "And if I refuse?"
"Unwise," Mei cautioned. "They're not used to denial."
"Like your fellow disciple yesterday?" Kai arched an eyebrow.
Mei winced. "Narcus overstepped. But the incident only heightened their curiosity about Riverstone... and you."
Kai turned back to his workbench, fingers tracing his hidden project. "I'll meet them," he finally conceded. "But on my terms—in the village square. Not as a subject summoned before masters."
Mei studied him. "You've changed, brother."
Kai met her gaze unflinchingly. "We've both changed."
That afternoon, Kai stood in the village square facing the five masters who assessed him with scrutinizing gazes.
"Young Kai," Master Arkine began, voice carrying across the square. "Your sister speaks highly of your talents."
"My sister is kind," Kai replied evenly.
Master Viros's ancient eyes scanned the surroundings. "This village has prospered remarkably. Unusual for a settlement so distant from trade routes and lacking cultivation resources."
"We find solutions where others see only obstacles," Kai answered.
Master Osden gestured to the nearby mechanical water pump, its gears turning smoothly without human intervention. "Solutions like these? I've not seen its like even in the capital."
"A simple mechanism," Kai explained. "Water pressure drives the gears, which lift more water. Self-sustaining, once started."
"Simple," Master Arkine repeated skeptically. "Yet beyond royal engineers' capabilities. How does a village boy with no formal education create such things?"
Kai met the master's intense gaze unflinchingly. "Perhaps royal engineers are too concerned with impressing royalty to focus on practical solutions."
A dangerous silence followed.
Master Viros broke it with a dry chuckle. "Bold words. Have you considered study at one of our academies? Your mind, properly trained—"
"I'm needed here," Kai interrupted politely but firmly.
"Why?" Master Arkine pressed. "Your sister shows remarkable promise. With her protection, your family's future is secured. Your talents might serve better in broader circles."
Kai's expression hardened. "With respect, Master Arkine, sorcerer talent is but one path to power. There are others."
The statement hung provocatively in the air.
"What other paths?" Master Osden questioned, stepping forward with a solemn expression. "Speak plainly, boy. What are you talking about?"
Mei moved subtly closer to her brother, hand drifting toward her sword hilt.
Kai gave her a reassuring smile before addressing the masters. "Knowledge. Understanding. The natural world operates by principles that, once understood, can be harnessed without the cultivation of ether."
Master Arkine scoffed. "Ha! Nonsen-"
"Interesting theory," Master Viros said interrupting Master Arkine, eyes narrowing. "And where did you acquire such... understanding?"
"Observation. Experimentation. Trial and error." Kai gestured toward the village. "Everything here came from asking questions others didn't think to ask."
Master Arkine studied him with new intensity. "Are you saying all these inventions are merely through trial and error?"
"Yes." Kai withdrew a parchment with a sketch. "This demonstrates my process. Notice the corrections and revisions—each represents a step toward perfection through experimentation."
"I see," said Master Osden.
The Masters exchanged glances in silence.
Master Viros raised a hand. "We've seen enough. Young Kai, your talents are... noteworthy. But remember—never and I mean never build something that challenges the heavens."
"Of course, Master Viros," Kai replied with a respectful bow.
Master Viros nodded, rising to his feet. Turning to Mei, he said, "Student Mei, we will leave soon. I suggest you say your goodbyes now."
"Understood, Master Viros. I'll join you shortly," Mei replied with a respectful bow.
After they departed, Mei said quietly, "That was either very brave or very foolish."
"Perhaps both," Kai replied, watching their retreating figures.
"Brother, I understand you don't like their attitudes. I feel the same way," Mei said gently. "But we have to be careful when dealing with their kind," she warned.
Kai met her gaze solemnly. "I know, sis. But what concerns me more," he added, leaning closer, "is you. Don't let them reshape who you are. If it ever becomes too much, just come home."
Mei's smile warmed as she ruffled his hair. "You always could see right through me—you and mother both." Her expression softened with nostalgia. "Those first nights away were difficult. I cried myself to sleep missing everyone. But I persevered, and look at me now." She gestured to herself with quiet pride. "I've learned to wear different faces with them while keeping my true self intact. My journey's far from over, but I'll continue growing stronger."
Kai hesitated, "Big sis..." The secret of his mountain discovery lingered on his tongue, but he simply nodded. The finding required further investigation before sharing.
That evening, amid tearful embraces and goodbyes, the sorcerers departed with the five newly chosen children, including Mei.
