Chapter 3 - Night Shift

Nurse Jenny was working tonight, in the south wing of Sunnyvale, on the second floor. Everything was going well. One of her patients, John just had her help him move to the recliner in his room. He insisted that the bed was too soft for his back and was causing him pain. Jenny didn't mind, this was his usual complaint, and he often slept in his chair. As usual she had taken a thin blanket from the cabinet about an hour ago, because she had anticipated his request, and draped it on the recliner. John thought that nurse Jenny was one of the sweetest people he had ever met, and honestly he had a small crush on her. Everyone loves her. Jenny was in her late 20's, had blond hair that fell in ringlets down to the center of her back, despite being in a ponytail. She had a small heart-shaped face, with a cute button nose and a smooth complexion. Jenny was around 5 foot, 4 inches tall, and had a beautiful hourglass figure. Also she was in no way considered a "dumb-blonde." But seeing as how he was her patient, and the fact he only had one foot, John never worked up the courage to ask her out.

After getting John comfortable for the evening, Jenny went on to finish her rounds and make sure everyone was tucked in for bed. New protocols were put in place, every patient must be checked on every 45 minutes, due to the recent disappearances. After more nurses were hired the plan was to have two nurses in each section of each floor so the patients could be checked every 30 minutes. There would also be a security guard for each section of each floor, instead of the current four that patrol the whole nursing home. Well I should say two patrol and two are posted at specific areas within the hospital and we do have a fifth guy who patrols the grounds outside.

Nurse Jenny just finished a set of rounds, and had set down for a few minutes to eat some more of her dinner and check the security feeds, at the nurses desk. She had ten minutes before she would have to start her rounds again, and due to the lack of staff, she was slightly exhausted. Suddenly, she saw a shadow move under the door of room number 207, it was John's room. "What is that crazy man doing now?" She thought. John was not supposed to move about without assistance because he could pop open his stitches. Women's intuition told her that something was off so she went to take a look. John was usually an obedient patient, surely he would have pressed the call button if he needed the restroom or something like an extra blanket. Why was he out of bed, or in this case, the recliner?. She got to his room and knocked, "John, it's Jenny, is everything okay?" Instead of a response from him she heard a small crunch noise. If that wasn't strange enough, the door was locked. She quickly went to the nursing station and grabbed her keys. After quickly unlocking the door, she let herself in. "John?" She called and flipped on the lights. His bed was empty, as expected, but so was his chair. She immediately started the missing patients protocol, searched every inch of his room and his bathroom, but couldn't find him. All she found was his pillows on the floor, and the one from the bed had a small blood stain on it. So after a fast review of security footage, and still finding nothing, she called the police.

Just like before, Officer Abbot and his partner were on the scene. Nurse Jenny answered all his questions. She even told him about the door being locked from the inside and the weird crunching noise. Abbot thought the noise was probably her tired mind playing tricks, but like a true professional, he kept his opinion to himself. Once again the nurse told him about an object with blood on it. Which he of course had his partner collect for evidence. Then, after giving nurse Jenny his card, they left her to resume her rounds. After nurse Jenny returned to the nurses desk an hour later, she noticed her forgotten salad had spoiled so she threw it away, deciding to just buy a breakfast burrito from the gas station on the way home. She then sent a text to her friend Amy, from the third floor, telling her about the incident. After a small discussion, the conversation ended, seeing as how they both had more rounds to make before going home in the morning. They both chose to message Nurse Sarah from the fourth floor, she had been on duty the night Mary went missing, to get her take on the recent events. Sarah also messaged Bob from the morgue. By morning they were all in a group chat discussing the disappearances. The only thing the incidents had in common was the blood found at the scene each time. It was always a different object but every time there was blood. It was indeed strange. One thing that was very clear was that these incidents were increasing in number, but the time between each incident was getting smaller. Bob predicted that if it continued this way, another disappearance would happen within a week or two. The nurses were of course hopeful that this was the end. But, Bob was a cynic, the math told him he was right and so did his gut. Little did he know, just how right he would become...
