"There are nuances in how to treat those who are beneath you, especially as a ruler, one must appear benevolent yet fierce, and in the lines between the two, one can get lost and the scale may become unbalanced."
To Lyor,
Within your letter I can assume you have spies in the Exos Empire. As the information about my lack of etiquette wasn't relayed previously. I'm not pointing this out as something negative, if you do I would like to share such information, telling me who's the spy would also be much appreciated.
I'll make sure to use your gift well, and hopefully I'll never need it. I started classes today on etiquette and Empire history. I must say I excelled in both. My brain is the one thing I'm proud of, so expect great things from our partnership.
If possible I would like to keep exchanging letters even during your conquest, even with the probable delay of response.
Happy to inform you that I formed my own order of knights, as in the future they will belong to us both, I would like to tell you about them. For now I have five knights, if everything goes well, I'll have recruited the last sixth one required after lunch. The division is called Golden Phoenices, named after the bird and a symbol of my own rebirth.
Regarding the knights: Raphael is one of the twins that used to serve me closely, he's quite versatile, but tends to second guess himself a lot. I'm looking for ways to develop his leadership better, but still unsure how to, if you have any pointers it would be much appreciated. Scarlet is exceptional with the sword, but due to her noble background I feel a bit uncomfortable with her yet, a bit funny due to my stance as a Prince, but I feel much more comfortable with commoners. Dacre was one of my recent recruitments, he's desperate and a bit insane, controlling him will be difficult, so I plan on using a blood contract. Gutierre is the oldest, he's 36 and recently I discovered that he is divorced and has children, which to be honest I find a bit weird. Why would someone with children do dangerous work as a mercenary? Not that I can judge others, considering my own past. At last Irene was the last one I recruited, she's a marvelous magician, but I still don't have much on her.
If you want I can send you their formal profiles for your familiarization.
Lowe, my attendant, is out buying the materials for the sunscreen, hard to believe that in the Empire we still have very few cosmetics that work properly in such a stance. I guess we pushed all the technology and forgot about health. Yesterday I was out for a while and already came back to the Palace with a flushed face and swamped clothes.
I'll keep the information about you close to my heart. Last night I had a difficult situation with my brother's fiance. I can't go deep in detail in this letter even with all the protection within, when we meet soon I'll talk to you about it. However, due to that conversation I have been out of it, I keep thinking about what I must do before we get married and can't help but find it too much for me, even with my outstanding brain.
So, in the future I may need your help in more than just my own safety, if that is something I can also require of you.
Truth be told, I have no idea how to process the last week of my life, nor can I begin to understand my own feelings.
All I know is that I want to be safe.
I'm attempting to open myself to you, as my future partner for life, but I don't even know what to do to show you, differently from your beautiful letters I'm way too curt.
This is how far my attempt in sharing my feeling with you can go for now.
On my favorites:
fruit - peach
flower - kerria
scent - fresh grated ginger
food - glazed vegetables, wine sauce and slow cooked lamb (first time I ate such a complex dish was yesterday at dinner, found out I hate corn, but I love cooked carrots)
last read - The History of Marriage (has really good references on culture in most Kingdoms)
Other informations about me are that I don't fear much, but I do have a strong dislike for loud noises and scorpions, my favorite color is black, I don't have much of a sense of style and very much prefer staying indoors where is safe and comfortable, my sheets are soft and warm so I don't really wish for much beyond that.
With care,
Prince Nikias Gregor Chrysl.
After a very short morning run, a terrible breakfast and morning classes, Nikias finally writes a reply to Lyor's letter, he spent a good portion of his night reading the letter he received, after the meeting with Evangelia, he couldn't sleep, his head spinning through all that has happened and what he should do next, for someone just hoping to stay alive, he managed to fill his plate with impalatable things to do. Not only administering his new knight's order, but also his lessons, self-study, investigation, paperwork, working out and even trying to take care of employees and his new relationship with Lyor. One would falter with much less, sure in the name of survival, he can take it, with pleasure.
Working non-stop and barely sleeping is much better than sleeping on the streets during winter, being beaten up by his father or even having to bear listening to gross old men hitting on him just because he was young. Being warm, well-fed and safe is priceless, yet his mind has been deteriorating, in a short amount of time.
And today won't be much better, not only he has to convince Clara Gagne to become a temporary knight, but he also has a few meetings during the afternoon that are just as important, including the knights meeting, a meeting with Lyor and Fleuri on Nikias' assets and later on a dinner meeting with his parents and brother on his and Alkaios' engagement. A pulsing headache starts to slowly creep in Nikias' head.
As a Prince and the employer of so many people now, he must learn how to not falter in the face of his own thoughts. His gaze goes to the sleeping fairy on top of his desk, her eyes are shut tightly and her chest is slowly going up and down, he watches her breathing for a while, calming himself up together with its breathing.
Get it together Vahe, everything is going well, in two years you'll be far from here, start anew, no fake parents or brother, this farce won't need to keep up for long. Sure, once he enters the Morke Kingdom he'll be judged by himself, not the shadow of another, yet his foundation will always be another's, his life will always be overshadowed by the previous Nikias' world. He may escape the family, but he can't outrun a past that doesn't belong to him. And at the end of the day, Nikias and Vahe are one of the same, a mirror of each other, highlighted by their traumas and own history.
The sound of the door opening makes the man raise his head to watch as Fleuri enters, per usual his expression is of annoyance and exhaustion. ''Your highness, there is a very annoying person requesting an audience with you. Lowe was stuck with your mother's butler so he requested me to tell you.'' His words are dragged out, and he yawns at the end, his tone is annoyed.
''Who is it?'' Nikias asks, his tone is soft enough to wake Fleuri up, he looks at the Prince with a worried expression, wondering why the Prince's tone was so different that morning.
''I don't know, he didn't provide his name'', the half-elf answers, deciding not to probe his employer's worries, after all, they're not close enough for that. The only thing binding them is a magic contract with clauses that require loyalty, not friendship.
Nikias thinks for a moment before nodding, allowing the stranger to have his audience, after all, something he always enjoys are interesting and unusual situations. Plus, he was feeling under the weather, so nothing better for a to pick me up, than acting like a righteous Prince in front of a stranger.
The first thing Nikias observes on the stranger is that he is for sure a halfling, just like Fleuri, most wouldn't be able to recognize a half-vampire, not only because vampires are a new species recorded only in the last 200 years, but also because they're almost completely human-looking. The only way to recognize a vampire is due to their avoidance of sunlight and their blood-like eyes, a half-vampire? Even harder, as they don't have the sun sensitivity vampires have nor the blood-like eyes, unless they transform due to lack of blood.
But there's a thing half-vampires have that give them away, a small scar on both of their cheeks, very similar to a dimple so most could mistake for it, even so, a dimple is slightly smaller than the scar, which to Nikias, makes it obvious. However due to the small record of vampires in encyclopedias, most wouldn't even recognize a vampire itself.
The man is short next to Fleuri, he seems to have approximately 1,60m of height, his physique is scrawny as most vampires and half-vampires don't consume human food, therefore rarely put up any weight, his almond eyes and buzz cut hair are pitch black and his skin is pale, just like one would expect of a vampire. ''I greet the second star of the Empire'', the man bows, yet his eyes don't leave Nikias.
''May I inquire about your identity?'' Nikias asks, his eyes are serious and he attempts to keep his tone firm, his hand covering the fairy that is on his desk.
''Yes, I'm Miyuki, a commoner and refugee from the Algeo Kingdom, and former servant of Duke Sawdon'', his last words are what piques Nikias interest, after all one of his current headaches is the Duke, who's attempting to withhold his assets.
''And what do I owe your presence here to?'' He asks carefully.
Miyuki hesitates for a second, before lowering his tone to speak. ''I have information on the Duke that may be of help''.
''The price?'' Fleuri is the one that questions, he's sitting on his desk, the pile of documents almost covering his whole face.
''I just want a job and protection. I heard you're forming a knight's division. I'm not very good with weapons, but I am well-versed in Monsterology and my mana control is decent. I am sure I'll be a good asset.'' He stumbles over his words, his nervousness is clear, whatever information he has, he's scared of having it. Sure, Nikias needs knights, especially magicians, but someone suddenly appearing like this? Falling onto his lap right when he needs it? There's nothing more suspicious than that.
''And why should I believe you?'' Nikias asks with a click of his tongue.
Miyuki trembles. ''I know why the Duke is withholding your assets and his future plans for it''.
''So?'' Fleuri asks. ''Speak''.
''I need my protection first'', even if he's trembling with fear he still holds his ground.
''Would you be willing to make a mana pact?'' Nikias retorts.
''Yes'', the half-vampire jumps over the opportunity.
''May I stop both of you right there, your highness, a mana pact with a half-vampire might require you to share your blood with him, I don't really recommend it'', Fleuri's observation takes Miyuki by surprise.
''How did you know?''
Fleuri rolls his eyes, ''You don't even hide the scars, only someone stupid wouldn't notice''.
''You're the first one to''.
''Lowe noticed as well and his highness definitely noticed,'' Fleuri's observation is on point. ''Either way, your highness, a blood contract would be better, even if it is a hassle to make it''.
Nikias takes a few moments to observe the young man, his eyes are clear and he doesn't seem to be lying, even so, he isn't exactly ready to jump at the opportunity to blindly trust someone. ''File his entry within the knights, but he'll only train with them after signing the blood contract… Would that be enough for you to speak?'' He talks with Fleuri before directing himself at Miyuki.
''Yes'', the man answers simply.
''I don't trust vampires'', Fleuri whispers loudly enough for everyone to listen.
''And I don't trust elves, so we're even'', Miyuki answers, tapping his nose, showing that he can smell Fleuri's acidic blood, the half-elf's cheeks turn red before he turns his face away, going back to his mountain of documents.
''If you could speak shortly, it would be greatly appreciated'', Nikias says with a short eye roll, he isn't there to listen to meaningless banter, neither he has the time to, as he still has to speak with his other knights.
''Sorry'', Miyuki says, smiling awkwardly. ''I overheard the Duke talking about using your lands to plant some sort of illegal plant, something over some ritual… I did hear a little more, but I reserve my right to share those once I sign the contract''. His attempt to guarantee his safety is commendable, and if Nikias was in his place he might've done the same. Why he chose to negotiate with an useless Prince is still in question, but he is smart enough. Although that's not enough.
Nikias smiles, not reaching his eyes. ''I don't really care if you want to wait for the contract or not, but you should know better. If I want the information I can find a lot of ways to extract it without wasting a blood contract on you.''
Sure, he likes desperate people. Not when they try to take advantage of him, though.
''I just…'' Miyuki seems to not know how to properly convey his words. ''I'm sorry, he…'' He takes a deep breath before speaking again. ''He mentioned something about a mansion being used as a hide-out for his slaves, and some sort of god-worshipping ritual.'' His hands trembled, ''he used my blood and the blood of a few other halflings to draw a circle at the basement of his house, what he did in that room I don't know since I wasn't allowed in unless it was to draw my blood''.
Is Duke Sawdon related to the cult of Vremes worshipers? I can't be sure exactly since there are a lot of gods he could be worshiping… Nikias thinks while keeping a blank expression, he's processing Miyuki's words, it helps a lot to know such information, however there's not much he can do with it. He has no access to his assets and if he jumps the gun too soon he might sacrifice his safety, which isn't something he's willing to do. Well, there's still time until the resurgence so I don't need to rush the gun.
''Very well, you can talk with Fleuri here,'' Nikias points to his aide, who groans in response, ''About the contract, if you excuse me, I have another meeting to attend'', he says while placing the fairy in his blazer pocket. Before leaving the room he thinks again about requesting an office, as his bedroom seems too crowded now.
❥
After a short stop in the garden to feed Petal, Nikias proceeds to his meeting with Clara Gagne, the former Princess from the Lumen Kingdom and now Duchess. He was apprehensive at first, but surprisingly enough, the woman accepted his offer quite quickly, the woman was quite bright and her stance elegant, poised like a true Princess, he even envied the way she presented herself as they negotiated her salary.
And at last, he was walking towards the knight's building, to have his first meeting as the leader of his own order of knights. If he said that he was confident, he would be lying, he's trembling inside, thanking the gods for his ability of hiding his feelings. You see, there's a limit to how much a person can act unbothered in the face of so much change. And even if Nikias wished he had a bigger tolerance, he is starting to exhaust himself with his own choices.
As the man walks past the gardens and reaches the training grounds he spots two familiar figures talking behind the building, why is Lowe talking with Rainier? He wants to walk past, after all, he shouldn't care about his employees personal lives, and Lowe can't lie or deceive him anyway so what's the point in spying on his own servant? The thing is, the more you get scarred by others, the less you trust them, even if they would quite literally die if they acted against you.
So, slowly Nikias walks closely to the two men, overhearing their discussion.
''Listen, big dog, this is exhausting and I have better things to do'', Lowe says, his voice filled with annoyance. ''You need to decide what you want to do, if you want to continue what we were doing, fine, but if you're going to keep throwing up and acting as if I'm some kind of vermin, then forget it''. Lowe's words seem to carry some meaning behind that Nikias can't quite identify.
There's a short silence before Rainier speaks, his voice muffled, clearly troubled. ''I want…'' another pause followed by a sigh, ''Look, I apologize about my recurrent behaviour, but isn't it enough that we both enjoy the time we spent together?'' Another silence ensues.
Lowe laughs. ''Fuck, do I really seem like some sort of puppet to you?'' His voice is charged with anger, Nikias never heard Lowe's voice like that before, it sure is interesting to see other sides of his servants, even if he shouldn't be witnessing it.
He thinks about leaving, clearly the conversation wasn't meant for his ears and they aren't talking about him either way, but Rainier's next words stop him. ''Well, aren't you? Don't you wag your tail following that dirtbag of a Prince? Pup.''
How would people describe Nikias? Or better yet, Vahe?
A calm, collected man that doesn't like being betrayed, and that can stab someone for stealing his food or even touching him inappropriately, as he surely did before. He even killed a man before, the story not relevant at the moment, so yes, his years as a kid from the streets sure hardened his skin. Either way, he never was the type to listen to people bullshiting about him and walking away. That's exactly why so many men were scared of him back at the homeless shelter, the nickname 'mad dog' wasn't just referring to his constant poker face and sharp tongue.
''Well, if it isn't the pot calling the kettle black'', he says, catching the attention of the two men, Lowe immediately straightens his back, assuming the position of servant, as if instinctual. Hannah seems to be training him well, Nikias observes. ''Tell me Lord Bauldry, are you attempting to be killed for insulting a royal? Many were killed for less''.
Rainier stares at the Prince for a moment, before sighing, his expression is one of disbelief, the bags under his eyes and pale complexion shows Nikias that the man isn't much better than the day prior. Whatever he's dealing with, he isn't a mere commoner, as a noble he must keep it together, just like I am doing. Well, Nikias isn't wrong to think so, after all, the people are just as confident and secure as their rulers, but what he fails to see is that sometimes, bottling everything up could be just as harmful, just like Rainier always did.
Keeping the perfect appearance, a perfect friend, perfect knight, perfect supporter, at some point the bill catches you, and you must bear the consequences of neglecting yourself on behalf of others.
Not that Nikias is ready to face that a lot of his choices aren't for him alone.
''My apologies, your highness, I spoke out of turn'', Rainier bows, his eyes lingering on Lowe instead of the Prince. ''If I may be so bold to say, this conversation wasn't about you sire''. So basically he's telling me to fuck off.
Nikias scoffs. ''Sure it is, you're mocking my servant for the sole reason that he follows my orders''.
Rainier's expression falters, he seems to want to retort the Prince's remark, yet he can't find the proper words to do so, especially considering he was clearly the one in the wrong. Even worse, the words that come out so naturally as he insults Nikias show just how much the previous Prince was dealing with, as if the neglect wasn't enough, anyone just treated him however they liked.
I feel bad about Nikias, he died alone, in more than one sense, Nikias' thinks.
''My apologies, your highness'', Rainier says simply, Lowe stares at the red-head, his eyes are heavy, deep with a feeling Nikias isn't sure he understands. Since when are they close? He wonders. But again, Lowe is his employee, not his friend, he has absolutely no right to pride in his personal business. Just like he isn't meddling with Frode's situation with Raphael, as it hasn't messed with his performance, yet.
One week, this is the time we know each other, sure we spent a good portion of it together, but still, does it justify this feeling of… loneliness? Nikias feels lonely as he sees Lowe having a conversation he knows nothing about, he wants to know, yet inside his head he's rationalizing it, saying it's just in case the man decides to betray him, not even taking into consideration that he might consider the twins as friends.
Maybe because Vahe never had friends, so he doesn't know how to portray himself in this situation.
''Well, you're always apologizing, Lord Bauldry, next time it might be your head rolling instead of your tongue'', Nikias says, his expression cold, but the threat isn't relayed with a firm tone, which Lowe notices, wondering why the Prince seems so out of it today.
But all it goes through his head is that maybe it is the exhaustion from the Poison catching up to him, and that perhaps he should urge the Prince to rest more, as he only sleeps for a few hours at night, reading books and discussing matters with Fleuri until the early hours of the morning.
Much to why the half-elf is always yawning and looking dead is because the Prince himself is exhausting him, not that Nikias does such self-reflection.
''Understood'', Rainier replies, his voice hoarse.
''Good. I'll take my leave'', Nikias says, turning to Lowe before leaving. ''Don't forget about our meeting…'' he looks down to his watch. ''In two hours''.
Lowe nods and bows as the Prince leaves.
It takes Nikias a little less than three minutes to get to the meeting room he reserved in the knight's building, he observes the small ice mana stones stores near the door, in order to climatize the room as the weather becomes hotter. Just like an AC, interesting, he thinks, entering the meeting room to see that most of his knights are already there, realizing what he's accomplished hitting him hard.
All five of them bow to greet him, yet Dacre is the first one to speak. ''Sire, can I move to the dorms now? I'm thankful and all for crashing at Gute's but his house smells like a gym, ya know?'' His words make Gutierre frown and Irene and Scarlet laugh. Nikias muffles a laugh, but manages to keep his face expressionless as usual.
''Yes Dacre, you can move to the dorms today if you'd like'', he answers with amusement, clear in his tone. Dacre makes a hand movement, celebrating the news. ''In reality all of you that wish to move here, just speak with the building manager to get your room''.
''No thanks, that sounds like a nightmare'', Scarlet answers, clicking her tongue, she's wearing squire's clothes again, her sword resting on her hip, her hair more messy than their previous meeting, making it clear she was training before coming to the meeting.
''There's a few things we will discuss today,'' Nikias starts, sitting at the meeting table, opposite to the knights, he straightens his back, trying to appear poised, the fairy that is resting inside his pocked moves as he does. ''As all of you are aware, as the contracts you signed stated, all I truly request is loyalty, you mustn't betray me, lie to me or even entertain the idea of such a thing''. He takes a deep breath before continuing, ''Apart from loyalty, I don't expect you to always follow my words blindly, you're allowed your own thoughts and opinions'', also because I don't have any idea how to administrate a knight's order, he completes inside his head. ''I also don't request you speak politely to me, however you must be aware of the time and place,'' he looks at Dacre specifically, ''If you're in front of my parents, or brother, you must speak with me with decorum''.
He pauses, observing the reactions, but none of them seem troubled or angry, instinctively he touches his pocket where the fairy lies, seeking comfort.
''Now, what I'll speak here is strictly confidential and if any information leaks it'll be the same as betraying me'', his words are necessary so that the effects of the loyalty clause in their contracts are activated.
Magical contracts work on a person's essence, if you consider something as betrayal then it'll be such, so for the clause to work, the ones that signed must be aware that their action results in the consequence. Blood contracts work a bit differently, breaching a clause will result in death, for both parties, that's why is forbidden outside the Imperial family and bothersome to be made, the contract doesn't require a clear statement of what will be considered betrayal, as it is dependant of the subject's, similar to a mana pact.
''The first reason why this knight's order was formed was to investigate certain shady activities occurring in the Empire without the knowledge of my family, the second is to protect me from any repercussions of my actions, regardless of the one doing such. If my brother suddenly decided to punish me I do expect you to protect me''. He pauses once Scarlet raises her hand.
''You're assuming any of us could even last seconds against the Crown Prince''. Nikias nods to her statement, the only ones capable of going against Alkaios are their father and Lyor.
''I'm aware, I don't expect you to win, but to attempt to do so''.
Irene is the one who speaks next. ''Are you expecting to piss the Crown Prince off?''
He laughs, ''Of course not, I'm just explaining what is expected of you''.
''Well, I could die trying but I would at least try'', Dacre comments with a shrug. ''Wouldn't we all be punished if the Prince is, after all, hurt? So if we need to push off the Crown Prince or a thousand monsters, then we must, it's the job description''. He's correct, everyone there knows what is the role of a knight, to die for their master.
Not that Nikias intends to kill or get any of them killed.
''Continuing, the third reason is the most sensitive one, I expect that in six years time, a god will have a resurgence'', he speaks carefully, either way, all of the five knights gasp at his words. This time, Gutierre is the first one to speak.
''How can you be so sure?'' His question is fair, yet Nikias doesn't have a good response for that right now, yet, he was always good at thinking fast.
''As most of you must be aware, my fiance is a Saint, his connection to the gods gives him information most of us, humans, wouldn't have''. Sorry for using you to lie, Lyor.
Gutierre nods, as if what he said made sense. ''Our goal is to prevent that, then?''
''Yes, not only investigate and attempt to stop the resurgence, but if it takes place, we all must fight it'' his words carry more meaning than what he expects, by stating we, he shows that he will sacrifice himself to this fight as well. Not that Nikias truly plans to do so, when he says we, he's referring to Lyor, not himself.
''Which god?'' Irene asks, her teal eyes are calm, but she seems to be biting her lower lip anxiously. As a magician, she and Raphael are probably the only ones there truly aware of what fighting a god entails.
''Vremes, the ancient god of time'', Nikias says calmly.
Irene laughs nervously. ''Oh god, so we're all dead, good to know''.
''There's a way'', Raphael is the one attempting to calm the woman down, ''Old books describe a lot of ways to stop a resurgence and…''
''If we fail, we die then'', Irene interrupts him. ''Vremes was killed by other gods together with Emperor Aelius and Empress Nyx for a reason, a thousand years and he wasn't missed, ya know?'' She stumbles over her words, finishing her sentence with a sigh. ''At best we would manage to seal him away, at worst we might get trapped in some cursed time loop''.
Nikias wants to laugh as the time loop is mentioned, he almost wants to say they're already on the fourth, but he knows he shouldn't, so he doesn't do so. If she knows this much, I did well recruiting her. His good luck with employees one day could run short, for now he's good though, only having those that will help one way or the other.
''Fine, so maybe fight the Crown Prince and for sure try to kill a god'', Scarlet says, ''Sounds fun, can we get my brother killed before we kill the god though?'' She says sarcastically, Raphael snorts, turning his head away for his grin to not be seen by the others.
''Basically, yes.'' Nikias answers seriously. ''But first, I got a teacher for you, especially for Dacre and Scarlet. Her name is Clara Gagne and she'll be coming tomorrow after lunch to speak to you and forge a class plan.'' He says, by Scarlet's reaction he can tell that she knows who the woman is as her eyes shine with the mention. ''Treat her with respect and train properly, as I mentioned this order has three divisions, Raphael is the Captain of the Shadow division, he's responsible for Dacre and he'll also be the one in charge for your first mission. Irene will be the Captain of the Magician's division, tomorrow you'll have another recruit, use him at your best to execute my orders''.
Irene nods, she seems deep in thought after Nikias mentioned the Ancient god.
''And the official Knights division is formed by Gutierre, Scarlet and Clara, who'll be a temporary member'', he continues. ''The Knight's division still doesn't have a Captain, for now focus on training''.
''Why not just make me or Gutierre the Captain?'' Scarlet asks, her words are filled with distrust. ''Are we not suitable for the position?''
Nikias takes a few seconds to answer. ''It's just that I have other plans for you''.
''Care to share?'' She asks, her gray eyes are fierce.
''You're not ready yet'', he replies simply, truth be told, Nikias isn't 100% sure of his plan yet, so he would rather not share than to be wrong or to fail. Scarlet isn't satisfied with his answer, but she doesn't retort again. ''Your first mission will start tomorrow when a knight from Morke will come, he'll assist you''.
''He'll be staying at the dorms and will also be under me, so I would like to request you to share rooms with him, Dacre'', Raphael says, already aware of Nikias' plan as he was briefed the night before. ''Considering that once Prince Nikias marries King Lyor, we will also be colleagues with him, I do hope we all get along nicely'', he's working hard on his leadership, Nikias observes, approving of Raphael's words.
''Correct, his name is Jiwon Draeger and he's part of Lyor's specialty Knights. About the mission, I will request Raphael to brief you, as I do have another meeting in a few minutes.'' He says, getting up.
Nikias is stopped, however, with Gutierre's words. ''Wait a moment, what about your personal knight?'' The question grabs Nikias by surprise, not because it was a good question but because he hasn't thought about it, he who is constantly worried about staying alive, hasn't considered the idea he must need a personal knight.
''Jiwon will be acting as a personal knight as well, by Lyor's request,'' he answers but he knows it isn't a good enough response.
''Regardless of such, you should have one of us act as a personal knight as well, even if he comes from your fiance, you can't fully trust him yet'', Gutierre's words are reasonable and make Nikias question why has he blindly trusted Lyor? The short answer is because he needs Lyor more than Lyor needs him. The long answer is way too deep for him at the moment.
''You're correct'', Nikias says with a sigh. He takes a moment to look at each of his knights, the sure answer would be to put Gutierre as his personal knight, he's good with the greatsword and he has experience. However, having him standing next to Nikias all the time would be bothersome, and he signed a magic contract, his sense of betrayal might not be the same as mine. For someone to stand next to him all the time they must have a lot to lose if they betrayed him, just like Fleuri and the twins. Irene is a good choice, but his plans for her require her to spend a lot of time studying magic, and Scarlet is a high ranking noble, he can't possibly feel comfortable around her for now. So the only choice left is Dacre, as Raphael is busy tending to their plans. ''Dacre will act as my personal knight for the moment, he can take turns with Jiwon, so that he still has time for training, and since Jiwon will also be part of the mission, he can accompany him as well'', he sighs. ''Well that's settled''.
''It'll be an honor!'' Dacre says with a smile, his eyes still as dull as ever.
Nikias nods. ''I'll be going then, if any of you must speak with me, please set up a meeting with Lowe or relay the information through Raphael''.
❥
The fragrant smell of lavender tea reaches Nikias' nose before Lowe places the cup in front of him, he's sitting at the table in the middle of his bedroom, Fleuri next to him scuffling a pile of documents and Lowe taking the other seat after brewing Nikias' afternoon tea. Slowly Nikias is expanding his library of flavors, before he only knew the occasional bread and watery soups, but now he's tasting expensive meats, fragrant teas and a variety of vegetables. For once he can find out his likes and dislikes, at first he was worried about the flavors the previous Nikias liked, but for now it seems that they have similar tastes. Their favorites are different, however, while the previous Nikias didn't enjoy cooked vegetables and strong meats, he certainly does, especially cooked carrots and lamb meat.
''So, after a lot of investigation, I found out exactly how much Duke Sawdon is withholding'', Fleuri starts the meeting with a sigh, he spent the last three days gathering so much paperwork that he even dreams about them. In some jobs the first week is more light to familiarize oneself with the environment, but it seems that Prince Nikias never got such a memo, as on Fleuri's first day at the job he already dumped so much work on him.
Of course it was because Nikias trusted his abilities, not that Fleuri knew that.
''Prince Nikias received a lot of assets along the years from his parents and brother, four small mana stone mines that generate approximately 3000 gold coins each per month,'' he starts the report, reading the information on the papers he has in front of him. Nikias listens to it attentively as he sips on his tea. ''Two country houses, one in the East duchy and the other in the Northeast march. Both are kept by Duke Sawdon's employees, and are used for his vacations,'' Fleuri sighs, ''I swear, this man is fearless'', he comments before continuing. ''A big territory up in the North duchy, enough to give someone the count title, also maintained by the Duke, and another territory, mostly plantation fields, at the South march.'' As he finishes he takes a deep breath. ''So, combining all the assets and their values, Prince Nikias would have a revenue of approximately 30 thousand gold, of tax money, plantation rights and the market value of the mana stones, per month, of course''.
''So basically, he's stealing from the Prince, his personal budget comes from the Palace budget, not his assets, and according to the asset transfer paper the Prince signed five years ago, he should've been receiving 40% of the revenue, which he hasn't been'', Lowe says, opening his own notebook to check his notes. ''The last time he received any revenue was three years ago, and he only got 5 thousand coins''.
Nikias finishes his tea, playing with the cup's rim as he thinks. The easiest way of solving this would be talking with his father or brother, Duke Sawdon's crime would be enough to ask for his head on a platter. Not only has he been stealing from a royal, but he also omitted information while filing his taxes, not declaring Nikias assets on purpose. At first Nikias attempted to solve this with a simple asset transfer, however the Duke has been evading his meeting requests, always too busy or pretending he didn't receive the letters.
However, if he did so, he could lose a great opportunity of investigating the Duke's moves, after what Miyuki claimed hours ago, about the Duke's uses of Nikias' assets, if Nikias simply removed the Duke, he wouldn't get the answers necessary on the slave trade or even - if his assumptions are correct - on Vreme's worshipers.
Even so, he isn't the type to allow others to steal from him, even if the assets actually belong to the previous Nikias, he can't let the Duke get off with crossing him.
''First, Fleuri, gather evidence of his use of my assets of the last five years, the more detailed possible, the better, especially regarding his tax evasion'', Nikias says, leaning forward, Fleuri sighs, already annoyed at the amount of work he'll have. ''Lowe, did you gather anything regarding rumors at the Palace while you were training?''
''Regarding the Duke I haven't, he isn't mentioned much by others, when I asked Hannah she said Duke Sawdon is well-regarded and hasn't had any issues since assuming the duchy from his father'', Lowe answers, he flips the pages of his notebook, ''However I did hear something about his son…'' He pauses for a second, his eyes faltering, ''It seems that his son has assumed the role of Master of the Northern Tower''.
Silence befalls the men for a moment, Nikias stares at Lowe, trying to absorb properly the information he just relayed. ''Wait, isn't that the…'' He doesn't finish his sentence, as Fleuri isn't aware of the twins' past.
''That's correct,'' Lowe answers, his voice is muffled with anger and sadness, ''Can I state my honest opinion, your highness?''
''You may''.
''You should investigate them and get them the maximum sentence the Exos Empire can provide'', in his voice there's nothing but anger, yet his expression is more of worry than anything else, he must be thinking about his past, so Nikias avoids commenting about the servant's line crossing.
''That's part of the plan, I don't see the need to go through official channels, however'', he says, tapping slowly his finger on the rim of his teacup. ''Even if my parents would be by my side and the Duke's crimes are more than enough for the death sentence, I don't see much of catharsis in that''. Nikias states, ''I want to set an example with him, but first we must flip every nook and cranny of his duchy and bring to light all of his secrets, this way we can find all the answers we need before we paint the walls of his house with his blood.'' His words are filled with more anger than he wished to showcase, he can't get over the fact of not only the suspicious activity of Duke Sawdon and his son, but also their attempt of taking advantage of Prince Nikias lack of political stance to steal from him.
''That sounds a bit too brutal, no?'' Fleuri says.
''Would you say the same if you were in the place of the halflings he enslaved?'' Nikias retorts.
''No'', Fleuri answers with a sigh, ''But won't murdering a Duke be bad for your reputation?'' He asks at last.
Nikias laughs, ''Fleuri, that's only if they know it was me''.
❥
Nikias is the last one to enter the dining room, he opens the doors to find his family already sitting at the expensively decorated table, as today was a special occasion, Evangelia is sitting next to Alkaios, her clothes are well fitted for a future Crown Princess and her silky black hair is up in a decorated bun.
''My apologies for being late'', Nikias says, taking his seat next to his mother, ''I was in a meeting'', he concludes.
''It's alright, we were about to start supper'', Empress Else says, her words are soft and her eyes are filled with worry directed at her youngest son, the image of his mana leak still filling her thoughts, still unsure of how to deal with the situation at hand.
A few servants enter the dining room carrying plates, one placing the plate in front of Nikias, the Palace chef arrives soon after, to explain the dish. So this is how rich people feel, he thinks. ''The entree is a green salad, with wild berries, pork skin crunch bits and pomegranate sauce,'' he explains, leaving the room soon after.
They start to eat, Nikias hold on the fork is much better than before, the lessons he had in the morning helped a lot. In some moments his grip is awkward, but he manages to eat well. ''So, Nikias, did Lyor and you already set a date for your engagement?'' His father asks once he finishes eating, Nikias takes a moment before answering.
''He's busy with conquests at the moment, but we plan to have the party after Alkaios and Evangelia's marriage'', he answers, glancing at his brother.
''So around a year from now?'' Alkaios asks, placing his cutlery down and cleaning his mouth with the cloth napkin at his lap.
''Correct''.
''Isn't that too far?'' The Empress is the one who asks.
''It was my request'', Nikias answers, ''Because of the nature of our relationship, the marriage must take place in his Kingdom, so I asked for the engagement to be here, for that he needs to prepare a lot so…'' he trails off, observing as the servants take their plates away. I don't think I like pomegranate sauce that much, it was too acidic to me, he thinks.
''That's understandable, but we would like to meet him soon, if possible'', the Empress says, ''After all our meeting at your birthday was awfully short''.
''Not to mention rude'', Alkaios whispers, clearly dissatisfied.
Evangelia touches the Crown Prince's hand, attempting to calm him down.
''So, how's the preparations for the engagement party?'' Emperor Magnus changes the subject, noticing his son's restlessness.
''Marvelous, we already prepared the invites, do you think King Lyor would be able to attend, Nikias?'' Evangelia says she seems eager to push the subject back at Nikias, as she also tries to calm her partner, hypocrite, Nikias thinks.
''You can always invite him and wait to find out'', he answers coldly, not even looking at her as the servants enter again with another plate, the fragrant smell of the meat making Nikias smile. He always feels like a child when he's facing different foods, as a child that never got to try things out, he can't wait to eat everything he can.
The chef enters the room again, ''The main dish is composed of glazed onions, carrot puree, a pheasant chest and finalized with orange sauce''. Nikias stares at the plate in front of him, the smell is fantastic, but the appearance is even better, he clumsily cuts through the meat, his actions catch the attention of Evangelia, who is used to seeing a composed Nikias, yet he is fighting with his own way to hold the knife, her mind traveling through suspicions and a sense that maybe something is truly wrong with Nikias, or even perhaps he isn't Nikias at all.
She would be half right and half wrong, sure, at first Vahe's soul entering Nikias body would mean that they're different people, however not only their wavelength is the same, but now slowly Vahe is becoming Nikias, a different Nikias from before, but him nonetheless.
''The dishes are marvelous, will chef Henrique be the one doing the catering for our wedding?'' Alkaios comments, breaking the silence of the room, the Empress nods.
''He said he's excited to plan the menu, after all he cooks for you since you were a baby'', she comments, Nikias wants to laugh, it sounds unreal that a chef would cook for a baby, yet that was the reality of those born in royalty, and he wouldn't be much different if he was truly Nikias, that is.
''Well, I think he would be happy to do the catering for Nikias as well'', Alkaios says, his eyes are glimmering, but not from excitement, he seems to be on edge since Nikias announced his engagement, almost as if he's trying to make his brother give up. Not that is going to work.
''I don't think so'', Nikias answers quickly, swallowing his food before anyone else can speak, ''I'm the one marrying into Lyor's family so the catering will probably be from Morke'', his words don't please his family and he can tell.
But it would be wrong to have them plan a wedding that isn't even for their own son.
After all, their real son is dead.
''Wouldn't he allow you to choose things?'' Alkaios retorts, ''After all chef Henrique also cooked for you since you were little''.
Nikias stares blankly at his brother, is he joking? He knows Nikias has no memory, yet he's pushing buttons, as if waiting for him to come crashing down, what is his objective? To make Nikias feel bad so that he meeks out and goes to pursue a brother who neglects him like before? Does he want to feel the high of being sought after? He can't hold it in, Nikias laughs dryly, his eyes showing no emotion.
Something a lot of his employees are used to, especially Fleuri, even the knights from the Palace are used to Nikias seeming crazy, but his family hasn't seen it yet. The first to react is Emperor Magnus, who puts down his cutlery and turns to Alkaios, opening his mouth to re-preend his son, but his wife is quicker.
''That's enough, both of you'', her words are short but enough to render both boys silent, her words carry weight, not only the weight of a mother, but also of a powerful magician. ''Kai, you should respect your brother's choices''.
In normal circumstances her words would probably be enough to make the man quit, however Alkaios isn't having it, his chest feels heavy from anger and he is desperate. Desperate to make his brother stay by his side forever.
In his eyes, his brother's fiance is the enemy.
''Respect? Mother, he is making stupid decisions and all you and father do is cater to him! Do you truly think marrying him off will be a good thing? He can't even use a knife properly!'' Alkaios yells, making Emperor Magnus hit his fist on the table, startling those present.
''Enough!'' He yells, his face red from anger, his mana clearly leaking from his altered state of mind, as navy blue bubbles start to float around him. The Empress touches her husband's hand, attempting to calm him down, using a bit of her mana to succeed in doing so. Magnus sighs, unsure how to deal with his sons. ''I don't like the idea as much as you do, Alkaios, but Nikias is an adult now, he has the right to make his own choices''.
''He can't even remember anything before he was poisoned! How can he even be sane to make such choices?'' And with Alkaios words all breaks, Evangelia's eyes almost jump from her face out of shock, and the employees present whisper among themselves. Nikias gazes at his brother, his eyes showing nothing, they're lacking emotion yet they shine with such danger, just like gold laying down in the sun.
His mana slowly leaking, he isn't angry, no, he just finds his brother incredibly stupid for a Crown Prince. Else observes as her son does his very first involuntary spell, different from a mana leak or rampage that destroys everything surrounding them in different degrees, a spell is certain and fulfils a certain wish of the caster. Right now all Nikias wants to do is shut his brother up, and so the knife he was holding flies across the table, hitting the chair Alkaios is sitting on, right next to the man's shoulder. The glimmering trace of his golden mana in action fluttering around the path from his hand to the chair, Nikias stares at his hand, trying to understand what he just did, what he felt.
At first he was just wishing really hard, then he felt a slow warmth grow from his heart to his hand, similar to when he drinks something warm and feels it going down his throat, he felt the mana traveling through his body and performing the action he wished.
It felt… fantastic, he thinks, still surprised at what he did.
In the end, he succeeded in shutting his brother up, and also driving the whole room completely silent. Nikias wants to laugh, he wants to cry and jump over his own joy, using magic for the first time felt so overwhelming, as if he was high on something. He contains his own smile, cleaning his throat. ''I understand both of your worries, what I can swear upon is that Lyor isn't taking advantage of me, nor he is using my situation to deceive me, I truly am infatuated with him, and he is with me'', he sighs, calming himself down from the high he just felt. ''I also understand that for you I am different, but to me, you're all strangers yet'', his words are too heavy, but necessary to be said. ''As you pointed out, Alkaios, I have no recollection of my childhood or life before dying'', it is the truth, after all he only has scattered traumatic memories of Nikias old life. ''Therefore, the relationships I hold close in the moment are the ones I developed in the course of these last days, my servants, knights and Lyor, sure it might sound stupid to fall in love at first sight'', because it is, and a blatant lie, ''But I truly believe Lyor makes me happy, and right now, the ones I have no found memory of, or even enough time to even have a relationship is… you'', he sighs again, the high already gone, all he feels is a pain inside his chest, he isn't their son or brother, so he might be hurting them, yet he can't get himself to lie. Especially considering all he knows, from Nikias memories and the novel. If Nikias were the one to survive, he wouldn't be happy either, as his family may care deep down, yet never show such feelings. ''As I told you before, if you want to be part of my life, all you need to do is make an effort, yet I see not such a thing from any of you''.
Ashamed, that is what the Emperor and Empress feel, but what can they do? It's too late, their son is dead and truth be told even if they truly tried to have a relationship with Nikias now, he isn't willing to open up to them, as he doesn't consider them his actual family.
''I did plan to leave after talking about my engagement, but I truly want to eat dessert so…'' he says with a crooked smile, his wonder of finding out more flavours is stronger than his wish to ditch this conversation.
''I'm sorry Nikki… I know we haven't been the best of parents…'' Empress Else attempts to speak, but Nikias interrupts her, this apology isn't meant for him, therefore he can't be the one to accept it.
The one who deserves this apology is already dead. ''Don't, mother, I didn't speak seeking an apology nor do I need one. I'm honestly happy as I am, I have great supporters and am to marry someone I love'', that isn't a lie, even if he's exaggerating it a little, he is enjoying exchanging letters with Lyor, and he is currently happy with those he chose to employ. He would be happier if there wasn't an imminent threat of destruction hanging over his head, once he is completely safe he'll for sure be the happiest man alive.
And maybe when that day comes he'll smile the biggest and more genuine smile he ever did.
❥
Even if Nikias wished so, time doesn't stop for no one, he blinked and it's already the day Lyor's knight is coming to the Exos Empire, after his morning classes where he learned more about noble etiquette, he is now standing in front of the teleportation portal of the Palace.
It's his first time seeing the portal and he couldn't be more surprised, a giant circle on the ground with letters reading 'Bring those who need to be here and take those who need to be somewhere else' in the ancient tongue written all over it, so that's how they write spells, Nikias observes, he's standing in front of the circle together with the twins and Dacre.
Lowe's role there is to assist Jiwon's adaptation there, and Raphael and Dacre are there as his future colleagues in the Shadow division, unfortunately Nikias wasn't able to talk with his father about Jiwon's arrival last night, however he did sent a letter to him that morning also disclosing his urgent need for an office of his own.
No wonder Nikias felt neglected, arranging a meeting with father was impossible, he thinks to himself, as he attempted a few times to talk with the Emperor but was always barred, with his next open meeting being only a year from now, the dinner the day before being his opportunity but it ended in that disaster. At least the desert was worth it, he thinks while remembering the soft texture of the flan.
The circle shines in a white color for a few seconds before a person appears in front of them.
Who Nikias assumes is Jiwon has a different appearance than those in the Exos Empire, his appearance reminds me of Miyuki, he observes. Jiwon Draeger has soft features, his almond-shaped eyes are black like obsidians and his hair is of similar color, parted in half and just long enough to reach his eyebrows, Jiwon's body is certainly one Nikias wouldn't expect of a distinct knight, lacking distinct muscles, similar to Dacre. As soon as the circle stops glowing he bows. ''I greet the second star of the Exos Empire'', his voice is clear and he has a bit of an accent.
''Nice to meet you Jiwon, Lyor talked about you a lot in his letters'', a soft lie leaves Nikias lips together with a cold smile. Jiwon's eyes twitch with the mention of his King, yet he doesn't show his discomfort for long.
''His majesty asked me to deliver this to you'', Jiwon walks towards Nikias, giving a jewelry box to him. The box is ornamented with silver and has a few images of the night's sky in it, also containing a few engravings which Nikias can't read, as it is the ancient tongue of the Morke Kingdom, and he has no knowledge of such, and neither does the god blessing him.
''I appreciate it'', he answers simply, proceeding to change the subject, ''This is Lowe, he's training to be my butler, any aid you require in the Palace he will be of assistance'', Nikias introduces, they shake hands, Jiwon muttering something as nice to meet you and Lowe doing the same, the Prince proceeds to introduce the others. ''And this is Raphael, the Captain of one of my knights division, he'll be the one briefing you over your roles, I expect you to respect his orders, while you stay here he'll be your Captain'', Nikias words seem to bother Jiwon, but the man doesn't say anything, the Prince notices it though.
Nikias opens his mouth to speak again but is interrupted by Dacre, he isn't bothered by the crossing of the young knight, the less he can be in this situation the better, by Jiwon's bothered eyes, he can see how Lyor's companions see him already. Is my chance of restart doomed already? He questions himself, fighting prejudices are harder than simply creating his own first impression on others.
''I'm Dacre, Prince Nikias' personal knight, we'll be working together and sharing the dorm as well'', the pink-haired enthusiastic knight steps up, extending his hand which Jiwon takes. ''Just so you know, if you keep making those faces at our boss, you might get bitten'', he says with a smile, Nikias wants to laugh, but he keeps his poker face, not expecting Dacre to also notice the clear discomfort in Jiwon's face. ''And I'm really good at biting'', he completes his words, Jiwon stares at Dacre's face blankly before opening a smirk.
''I do enjoy some biting every now and then'', his words are crude, but don't phase the walking cotton candy.
''In that case I'll make sure to bite hard enough to change your distorted preferences'', with those words Dacre makes Lowe snort, the training butler turning his face away to hide his smile, Raphael doesn't hide much, though, he starts laughing at Jiwon's disbelief face. Nikias smiles softly as well.
''It seems that I won't be needing to lecture you, Sir Jiwon, but please remember who you are and who am I'', those words drive everyone silent, slowly Nikias is starting to like Dacre even more, he is unpredictable for sure, and a wild dog, but his way of portraying himself is admirable, never scared of pissing people off. It seems that I made a lasting impression on some of my employees, for them to not hesitate to take my side in these situations, such realisation makes the Prince uncomfortable, yet he doesn't show it much, he wanted loyalty, yet he isn't used to people around him to defend his honor.
If Zerah was alive and here with me, would he also be defending my honor? He wonders, trying not to trigger his own memories while reminiscing over his dead brother.
❥
Nikias left Jiwon for Lowe and Raphael to deal with before going back to his bedroom holding the jewelry box tightly. He's not sitting on his bed, the soft fabric of the bedsheets tickling his skin and the fairy is laying asleep on his knee. Slowly he opens the jewelry box, the inside is covered with a black velvet fabric and there is a small letter underneath a beautiful bracelet.
The bracelet is made of silver just like the box ornaments, the piece itself is soft to the touch and thin, not weighting much, the moment Nikias fingertips touches it he can feel the power running through the relic, something soothing, almost sweet, there is no decorations or engraving, the piece is smooth to the touch. Nikias puts on the bracelet, feeling warmth enter his body through his left wrist. It feels similar to when I used mana for the first time, he thinks, a soft smile growing on his face.
He turns to the letter, opening it softly. Before he can read the letter a small piece of paper falls from it.
You don't need to burn this letter.
It was a simple note, Nikias laughs, so it is a letter I can keep as proof of this bracelet being a gift? He asks himself, but the answer comes soon after he starts reading.
To my lovely Nikias,
When you receive this letter I'll already be out on my conquest expedition. Hopefully you'll like the gift I prepared for you. This bracelet is made with moonlight silver, found in the rivers of my Kingdom once we have the Darkness Solstice, a celebration for the six months of darkness. Moonlight silver is usually given to lovers, and is considered a blessing of eternal love.
The bracelet was blessed by the gods once I finished making, maybe the wishes of your safety as I crafted touched their hearts.
Didn't he say this bracelet was already made a while ago? Nikias questions himself, but after a bit of consideration he assumes Lyor is just lying to create context to why he's giving such a gift to Nikias.
Once I return safely I hope we can meet well and celebrate together, not only my newest conquest, but also our love.
With my pounding heart,
King Lyor Natrix Noir.
Nikias' fingers linger through the letter, the clean calligraphy of Lyor making his heart pound, the letter is beautifully made, enough to make anyone think he's actually sending a letter to one he truly loves. What a beautiful lover Lyor is, one would expect Nikias to feel guilty over stealing Lyor's attention towards himself, maybe the man would love someone else truly in the future, and what Nikias asked wasn't a temporary fake love affair, but a lifelong marriage.
Fully aware that Lyor's Kingdom views divorce as an affront to the gods they worship, and they will never be able to do so after they tie the knot.
But that's exactly what Nikias wants, a lifelong partner, stable, that can't betray him and leave him with a bitter taste in his mouth.
It may be cruel if someday Lyor wishes to love someone else.
But that is the price Nikias is willing to pay for his future survival.
I hope at least we learn to feel affection towards one another, as partners for life.
Tossing such thoughts aside, Nikias closes the jewelry box, his gaze going to the two relics laying on his bed. The broken tiara of the god of Love and Aelius' diary. He takes a deep breath before taking the tiara in his hands. Most artifacts have different activation requirements, and to find out such, the only thing one can do is try and try to exhaustion.
So once the tiara has no reaction even when Nikias attempts to use his mana on it, he doesn't feel bothered, he can always try again later on, so he moves to the diary.
For a few seconds it also shows no reaction, until Nikias starts slowly pouring his mana in the diary, he feels as if it is sucking him dry, pulling all of himself inside it. His brain feels foggy and his hands burn as he keeps touching the diary.
And it keeps as if for minutes on end, until Nikias feels burned out, nothing else flowing from him, the diary flutters open, the first page glowing as the words slowly show.
I don't quite know how to use a diary, but Blaze urged me to do so, record my thoughts so one day I might be able to guide others like me.
Truthfully? I hope no one is able to read this.
If someone is reading this, though.
My name is Aelius, some told me I used to be a homeless boy from the slums of the Danna Kingdom, and that no one truly knew who I was, but suddenly I collapsed and stayed dead for days.
Ha, those damn idiots, letting a poor child lay dead in the middle of the street, not caring even to bury them. No one could be bothered.
Should I be saying poor me instead?
I don't think that was me though.
I was certain I died, and when I woke up I was in a world different from my own, magic, archaic sanitation and the way people talked seemed out of a historic movie. From where I was from, most would assume this was a world directly from a comic book.
Now I can't even recall the last book I've read there or the last movie I watched. Even the name of the mother I missed so much I can't recall.
My name is only the same because the poor boy who's body I took didn't have one.
I would love to write more now, but as I hope no one will read I will stop here for today. My wife is pregnant and I certainly don't wish to waste time writing for a ghost of the future right now.
Nikias doesn't even notice he was holding his breath until the end, when he gasps, fighting for air. ''So I wasn't the only one?'' he mutters to himself, the sound waking up the fairy, who stares blankly at him before falling asleep again. The other pages of the diary are empty, he probably needs to pour more mana in it for it to work, however he isn't able to do so, as it seems he exhausted his mana for now. ''Unbeliavable, maybe this is why they never found it'', he says again, laughing softly.
Of course Evangelia wasn't able to find the diary, after all her mana wasn't compatible with Aelius'.
''Wait, so my mana and his are the same?'' He wonders, of course Lowe had told him so the first time they measured his mana, but he didn't take it to heart before, thinking he was exaggerating. The excerpt in the diary left him with more questions than answers.
Why is he and Aelius the same? Why him? What is the final goal of all this? And most of all, what should he do with all of this information?

Author's Note:
So, this note will be a bit long, but I urge you to read and not skip it.
First I would like to thank everyone's patience for waiting this whole month for a new chapter and also all the sweet words I got on my notice chapters, they'll stay up because I want to read those comments for a pick me up every now and then.
Secondly I would like to recommend my discord channel for my update schedule and other fun snippets, I put up some stuff on the story there and also I don't flood that much, so it won't be troublesome with notifications. Here's the invite link (it'll work for a few days only, if you want to join and the link is already expired just ask and I'll give you a working one): https://discord.gg/4DssY8PP
Thirdly, I was supposed to post this chapter on the 2nd, however I started working last week and god I underestimated how tired I would be, so it took me a while to manage to finish this, but I did manage to finish it not too late. So I apologize.
Fourthly, If you skipped the notices, please check my other stories out, I have a tower climbing/soulmates/shounen like BL story up and also an omegaverse au of HLWC where both Nikias and Vahe are sharing the same universe, yay. If they're not your style then don't worry, just hope you keep enjoying HLWC in the future.
Fifthly, I'm planning on a mass update on October 31st as a Halloween special, I'll be posting a chapter of every story I have and also a special chapter for HLWC, posted as a side story I'll be making an one-shot halloween au focused on Nikias and Lyor (actually Vahe and Lyor, as there's no reason for him to be Nikki outside the soul transfer context). And as I have a factory of prompts in my brain, I would like y'all to vote for the theme, if you're part of the discord channel you can vote on the 'polls' channel, if you're not and doesn't wish to be (no problem at all) you can just comment here which one is your vote to! I'll check all the choices until the 20th and choose the most voted one to do the side story (because I need time to write it after all).
The options are as it follows (please only vote in one, I'm already indecisive enough):
Vampire x Werewolf au
Vampire x Human au
Werewolf x Human au
Ghost x Grim Reaper au
Ghost x Human au
Uni Halloween Party au
Warlock x Human au
Warlock x Grim Reaper au
Yes I have a story prompt for each, and no I'm not specifying who's for each role because I have thought about them in both roles and cannot in my mind decide before deciding the official theme.
Thank you again for reading and for the patience.
As my life slowly stabilizes I'll try to update here every Thursday (even though I failed the first week I have faith in my constantly messy ADHD brain).
Oh, and Monday/Tuesday (depends on your time zone) I'll be posting the ao3 exclusive side story on Nikias and Lyor's letters, as we'll have a time jump at the beginning of chapter 15, the letters will cover all the ones we've already seen, the ones we didn't and the ones they exchanged during the time jump. This side story is exclusive for ao3 in celebration for the 50+ kudos and all the comments of support I've received there, the side story will be posted on the 'HLWC- Side Stories' topic/work.
See y'all next chapter ^^
