Chapter - 22.1
Christmas was here, and Alex hated it. He did not hate Christmas. In fact, he did not have much interest in it because he was forced to mingle with those snotty children at the orphanage. Even if they had a running nose, they would wipe it off their clothes and play in the snow... Huh... How mediocre... This was what Alex thought about them.
But what was worse than those brats with running noses was the weather. Alex hated winter. He never told anyone why. And everyone thought it was because he did not like the cold. And then, with the first snow, you wouldn't find Alex anywhere but his room. Which would get worse as Christmas approached.
But other than Alex, everyone else was enjoying the advent of winter. Hogwarts was already several feet in the snow. The green grounds were covered with a thick blanket of snow, while the lake had frozen solid. The sky had turned stormy, and hardly anyone got their mail. The infirmary was also filled with students complaining of ailments ranging from a runny nose to frostbite.
But this did not stop one duo, the Weasley twins. No one was safe from their pranks, be it students or teachers.
With so much fun, everyone hoped the holidays could delay... just a tiny bit. And the one who wished that most was maybe Potter. Everyone knew about his parents, and being a celebrity, Potter got a wave of sympathy coming his way. Except for the Slytherins and a few others, everyone fawned over Potter and were extra caring. So with so much love, who in their right mind would want to leave the school?
"I feel so sorry for some," Draco said. If Potter was being fawned over, no one would be more unhappy than Draco.
"... For all those who have to stay at Hogwarts because they are not wanted at home," Draco said as he looked over at Potter. A little birdie told him that Harry had submitted the form, asking for permission to stay back at Hogwarts. And though Alex had not seen Malfoy act as wretched as before, there was no way Malfoy would let go of a chance to ridicule Potter.
Alex could not relate to Potter. Nicole and he were going back to the orphanage for the Christmas holidays. Since Alex had taken the first step to leave the orphanage, he had to check if his master was keeping his end of the bargain.
"This will be all for today," Professor Snape's voice broke Alex's thoughts, "I want you all to submit your assignments in the next class. Whoever fails to do so will have their points deducted. Now, leave..." Professor Snape ended his monologue and went inside his office.
Stuffing the books in his bag when Alex walked out of the classroom, he found Daphne standing by the door, rubbing her shoulders.
While the common rooms of Gryffindor and the other houses were roaring with fires, the Slytherin common room and its drafty corridor could not be any colder. There were even instances where cold droplets from the frozen ice on the roof fell on the nape of students, shaking them to the core.
And if one thought it could not get any worse, then the Potion's classroom was a nightmare. Apart from that bone-chilling and humiliating mockery from Professor Snape, the bitterly cold wind rattled the windows in the classroom. Everyone could see their breaths rise in a mist before their eyes, and the only redeeming object was the hot cauldron. Too bad... they could not hug it.
"Let's go," Just as Daphne saw Alex, her lips bloomed into a warm smile.
"Do you even know where I am going?" Alex asked.
"For lunch, obvio..." Daphne was confident, but she decided to confirm, "Right?"
"My room," Alex told Daphne.
"Then let's go there... Even I don't feel like having lunch today," Daphne said. But just as she spoke, her stomach grumbled. She couldn't be more embarrassed than that.
"Let's have lunch first," before Daphne could come up with an excuse, Alex spoke up and headed towards the Great hall. True, he wanted to keep some distance between him and Daphne, but unless she did something to annoy him, Alex wouldn't mind giving her some face. He was no fool to not see the efforts she was putting in.
But he could not wrap his head around why she was trying to get close to him. There was no free lunch in the world. She was the first to take the initiative when they did not even know each other. But he was not much worried about it. He knew it would come out sooner or later.
'Ughhh... Stupid stomach...' Daphne felt aggrieved enough to punch her stomach lightly. But she still followed Alex for lunch.

"Shut up, Malfoy," Just as they entered the Great Hall, Alex and Daphne saw Ron and Draco arguing.
'Why is it always him?' Alex thought as his eyes fixed on Ron. Despite the huge Great hall being packed with students, his voice was still the loudest.
And while Alex was still looking at Ron, the latter threw a punch at Draco. Or at least he tried to. Good thing that Professor Snape arrived in time. But unfortunately for Gryffindor, professor Snape arrived in time. Gryffindor lost another five points.
"Malfoy has changed," Daphne nodded in admiration for Draco's deceit, "He is using his brain now."
"You have known him for long?" Alex asked as the two of them continued to walk towards the Slytherin table.
"Hmmm... You can say that," Daphne nodded, "Our families have known each other for a long time," Daphne told Alex.
"... And he almost became my fiance,"
