Chapter 29 - Forging the Hammer

The constructs solidified throughout the chamber, their bodies glowing with neon-blue light. Some stood like towering knights forged from steel and crystal. Others drifted weightlessly, their forms flickering between machine and phantom.

The room itself seemed alive.

Its heartbeat echoed through the ancient stone.

Alex stepped forward, drawing the Sword of Imagination.

"Everyone stay together."

Kira silently nodded, her eyes never leaving the nearest construct.

Vile adjusted his glasses, studying the shifting machines.

"They're changing..."

Kaelor twirled his staff once.

"I was hoping for another puzzle."

"You wanted a fight," Ethan corrected.

"I wanted both."

The first construct moved.

Without warning, it rushed Alex.

Steel crashed against steel as Alex blocked its blade, sparks scattering across the floor.

"Kira!"

She was already moving.

Rather than overpower the construct, she struck with careful precision, forcing it away from Alex.

"It changes every time we attack."

"I noticed," Alex answered.

Across the chamber, more constructs awakened.

Liam immediately stepped backward.

"...There's a lot more than I expected."

Lyra smiled reassuringly.

"We'll get through this."

"I really hope you're right."

Rose quietly moved beside Liam, watching the battlefield with calm focus.

"If anything gets close, stay behind me."

Liam nodded immediately.

"I was planning to."

Nearby, Ethan ducked beneath a mechanical arm.

"These things don't fight fair!"

Kaelor laughed.

"Neither do we!"

A blast of magic knocked another construct off balance.

Vile barely noticed the battle.

His attention remained fixed on the floating blueprints.

"...No..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Alex glanced over while blocking another strike.

"What is it?"

"They're adapting."

"What?"

"The constructs aren't the trial."

Everyone looked toward him.

"The choices are."

The holographic symbols shifted again.

Every attack...

Every dodge...

Every movement...

The chamber recorded all of it.

"It's learning from us," Vile said.

"So stop attacking?" Mya asked.

"No."

Vile's eyes raced across the endless calculations.

"We have to fight..."

"...just differently."

He rushed toward the central projection.

Blue symbols wrapped around his hands as the fragment inside his satchel resonated with the chamber.

The constructs immediately changed.

Some stopped attacking.

Others retreated.

Several merged together.

Alex finally understood.

"They're reacting to you."

"No..."

Vile replied without looking away.

"They're reacting to our decisions."

The entire chamber trembled.

The floating blueprints folded together, slowly forming the outline of an enormous hammer.

Ethan whistled.

"So... that's what we've been chasing."

"Not yet," Vile answered.

"It's still incomplete."

The outline suddenly shattered.

Every construct in the chamber froze.

Then they began walking toward one another.

Metal twisted.

Stone cracked.

Blue light flooded the room.

The machines fused into a single towering guardian.

Its glowing eyes opened.

Kaelor looked up at it and sighed dramatically.

"...Well."

He tightened his grip on his staff.

"I liked the smaller ones better."

Alex raised his sword.

"Everyone!"

The team immediately gathered together.

Vile finally stepped away from the projection.

"This is the final test."

Rose quietly moved beside Liam.

Lyra stood beside Mya.

Ethan rolled his shoulders.

Kira settled into a fighting stance.

Kaelor smiled.

Alex took one steady breath.

Then the guardian roared.

The final trial had begun.
