Alexander leaned back against the couch slowly, his expression unreadable, but internally he already knew this conversation would come sooner or later.
The Laurent family trusted power. Not emotions. Not loyalty. And definitely not love. Which was why he could never allow them to suspect what Eleanora truly meant to him.
"She hates Carnage more than we do right now," Alexander answered calmly after a moment. "That alone makes her useful."
"Useful?" His father narrowed his eyes slightly. "Or important?"
Alexander met his gaze without blinking. "Both."
His grandmother observed him quietly from the side. Unlike the others, she wasn't reacting immediately. She was studying him. That alone was dangerous.
"Alex," she spoke softly after a long pause, "you are aware that emotions become liabilities in our world."
"I know."
"And yet you are training her personally."
