Even though you say you will try to smooth things over with Gustavo, the vice-chancellor frowns. She knows you don't mean it wholeheartedly.
"Part of maturing is learning to make the right choices, Matamoros. You are dismissed."
You leave the office. On your way to the auditorium to ask what happened, you find the skinny blond boy from earlier. His swollen cheek and the patch covering a cut on his forehead don't dampen his spirits; he smiles at you and raises a hand in greeting.
"Thanks for trying to save my ass down there. You came out bruised, but don't worry, you'll survive. My name is Claus. What's your name?"
You tell him.
"Nice to meet you."
You ask why he got in trouble with the youth.
"Isn't it obvious? I was defending the right to dress freely. Wearing pants that don't make you cringe is far from a panacea, but hey, baby steps until it's time to start kicking and tearing down walls."
He tucks his thumbs into his pants pockets.
"You have the face of an idealist and a nonconformist, man. Why don't you come with me to the bookstore on the corner? It's full of cool people. Anyway, classes start tomorrow. What major did you pick?"
Martial Philosophy.
"You have to have your ideas screwed on tight before sending soldiers off to die, huh. I have a good friend in there, maybe you know her."
